ARK -the lost fairytale-

ARK -the lost fairytale-

Narrator launches its 2014 exploration game 《ARK - The Lost Fairytale》 on Steam!

Different from other exploration games where you solve puzzles through ‘logical reasoning’, this game focuses on using association and story connection to solve puzzles.

Features:

+ Puzzles are based mainly on fairytales. Hints are given through reading the many fairytales scattered throughout the game.

+ Several original fairytales.

+ Tested by many players, it is considered moderately difficult with mild horror elements; not overly difficult, but not too easy.

+ Many small and surprising easter-eggs.

+ Steam achievements and trading cards. (trading cards will be enabled by Steam once enough copies of the game are sold)

- The True End does not explicitly end the story. The final challenge is to guess what will happen next!

STORY

After a long stay in the hospital, Nui was finally able to return to school.

However, on her way home from school, her beloved rabbit doll Caroline suddenly jumped out of her hands. Chasing after her doll, she wandered into a dark alley leading to a forgotten garden…

Character

Nui

A young, fairytale-loving protagonist. Being hospitalized for a long time made her silent and shy, but she’s very understanding and considerate.

When she returned to school, she didn’t know anyone, so she got in the habit of bringing her black rabbit doll with her wherever she went. The doll’s name is Caroline.

Noozu

A little boy found in the Twilight Garden.

Younger than even Nui, he’s very timid and physically weak. With the help of Nui, he’s able to move forward.

Lin

As Nui walked home from school, this girl appeared across the road.

Lured by her, Nui left the safety of the sidewalk to venture into the long, narrow alley…

Silver Creek Falls: Chapter 1

Silver Creek Falls: Chapter 1

Interesting game, but the dialog is rough, and a bit immature for the characters involved. Who says ‘Cool!’ when asked to investigate a crime scene?

The voice acted bit was…Hm. Well, the accent was far too ‘Southern Belle’ when it should have been more ‘Decorated Lawman’. I was honestly reminded of Tommy Lee Jones' portrayal of Clay Shaw in 1991’s JFK. While Jones' performance was stellar…the accent does NOT fit this kind of character. Also, I find if difficult to believe that the Sheriff would leave a cryptic sounding note for HIMSELF. If it were re-worded to be intentionally listened to by a third party from the beginning instead of at the tail end it would have been easier to suspend disbelief.

TL;DR: The first chapter of an investigation and mystery game saga promises an intriguing story line but lacks in its potentially coolest features.

RPGMaker game that is not an RPG, Silver Creek Falls puts you in the shoes of two police detectives who are presented with a case of ominous disappearances at the small town of Silver Creek Falls. I will try to keep this spoiler-free for the important bits, because the story is so short for the time being. Note that only chapters 1 and 2 are out. The third and last one will come in 2016.

Puzzling Peaks EXE

Puzzling Peaks EXE

AppSir has developed a series that has many games under its belt. They have continually proved again and again that there is far more to their games than it seems, by connecting each and every one of them.

The rest of the games on steam have been platformers, this one changes things up by being more of a puzzle game that sort of resembles golf. This change doesn’t some out of nowhere however, the story explains just how and why the change was made. While I do prefer the gameplay of the dere.exe games, this one makes up for the simple gameplay just with the story it tells. As usual this game is incredibly story and lore rich for the series and I love it.

The forgotten phobia

The forgotten phobia

The forgotten phobia is another template flip style game from asset flippers/scammers, Piece of Voxel. This time it looks like they’ve ripped off a lazy 2D retro pixel template for a horror/adventure platformer game. Resolution and controls are locked and they used ugly retro pixel “art”, probably because that’s what the template they copied had. The game is in Russian and doesn’t appear to have any English translation, but the language of bad games and asset flip scams is universal.

An important note: Piece of Voxel are known asset flippers and have previously taken other developers work and put it on Steam in an attempt to scam gamers and get paid for someone else’s effort. An example of Piece of Voxel doing this is Hoples, which is really “Pixel Adventure 1 ”, written by the actual developers, Pixel Frog. Also, Top Truck Driver, which is really “Hill Racing Template ”, developed by Janko Knez.

A grain of salt to be taken with my review: I bought this game on the spooky sale so I got it for significantly cheaper than it is normally (bought the complete edition for 5 dollars rather than 30).

The story is short and sweet (takes about an hour to finish the entire thing, 2 max if you really take your time and die a lot) not including the DLC, which is about another hour.

Mechanics are really clean and the game feels super well made overall.

Also, this game is wonderful for achievement hunters. They’re difficult enough to make you feel proud when you ace it, but easy enough to where you can get the hardest one in a handful of tries if you are willing to do it (beat the game in under an hour without dying).

Stela

Stela

First impression: It has flesh-eating bugs (instead of rats like in Plague Tale) to oversized Gollum and a pyramid-shaped Tet that zaps you into “Oblivion” (movie with the same name)

Well, I’m kinda fond of the atmospheric, minimalistic game that’s has a puzzle/maze element and this one makes no exception. However, this particular puzzle-platformer has a lot to desire compared with other similar games I played before. Visually, Stela is a striking atmospheric game in a side-scrolling format but technically it’s low-poly though enough care has been put into the visuals and environments where they all feel alive.

B-E-A-UTIFUL! That was the first thing that sprang to mind when I delved into STELA.

From the barren wastelands of fields to the cold and desolate snow-swept landscapes, STELA is absolutely caked in artistic imagery. Everything is designed with a keen eye and attention to detail.

This is particularly important as, much like games such as Limbo and Inside (which this game will no doubt draw comparisons to) there is no dialogue to tell the story. Much of what you gleam of this tale is from the images presented to you. Without spoiling anything, much of what this story entails is told from pillars found throughout the game.

A Rose in the Twilight

A Rose in the Twilight

A really underrated puzzle platformer.

If you’re like me and are interested in this game because you played The Liar Princess and The Blind Prince and noticed the similar art style (they’re made by the same developer), get this game. It’s a no brainer, and I actually liked it more than The Liar Princess and The Blind Prince. Do keep in mind that this game has a much more darker and violent tone, with blood being a central mechanic of the game and its story.

If for some reason you have only played this game and haven’t played the aforementioned title, then please try to play it as well if you can. Unfortunately it’s not on PC, so I played it on Switch. I really wish we get a PC port eventually.

The thorns hunger for blood

A Rose in Twilight immediately opens up to a little girl waking up in a ruined castle. Soon seeing she has a huge rose on her back. As you continue walking through the unfamiliar scenery, you soon learn of the powers you possess and much more. The little girl, named Rose, is able to absorb the color red to take the life out of an object, making it stark white and stuck in place. Turning the rose on your back red in the progress so you can transfer it to another object. This also goes for blood you see spilling out of long dead people, giving you a vision of their memory. However, the ruins is more deadly than you think as falling to your death is always a possibility, especially when a flower brings you back, essentially making you immortal.
