Evan’s Remains

Evan’s Remains

Even’s Remains isn’t bad as a game. It’s a puzzle platformer, and while it’s not the best around, it gets the job done. The puzzles are well designed without being too frustrating, and they can be fun. The graphics are probably the best part, dripping in pixelated goodness, and the music is relaxing and fits what the game is going for. So all that’s good.

What breaks the game is the story.

On the surface, it’s about a young woman named Dysis hired to find a boy named Emil on a deserted island, home to some ruins from an ancient civilization. You find a dude named Clover there, who’s trying to discover the ruins' secret and save his little sister from a hereditary disease. Simple enough, right?

(review code provided by Whitethorn Digital)

I first saw Evan’s Remains during its Kickstarter campaign and followed it as it was picked up by its publisher (Whitethorn Digital). looked great the whole way, so I applied for a review code. here are my honest first impressions after ~2 hours and 20 minutes of gameplay:

  • gorgeous pixel art, with stunning environments and character designs.

  • majestic chiptunes soundtrack that’s worth picking up, methinks.

  • cerebral yet fair puzzles, which allow those that have troubles with them the option of skipping them by going to the menu. so it’s very accessible, though I personally haven’t yearned to skip any of the puzzles yet (I don’t think I will skip any of them until after I’ve beaten the game once; I do want to review this comprehensively rather than phoning it in, since I WAS given a free code and it’d be feel slimy to not bleed a bit of ink talking about how I feel about it) and none of them have taken me 15 minutes yet (since the game gives an achievement for taking 15 minutes on a single puzzle and I haven’t gotten that yet, lol). and I’m not super into puzzle games aside from Baba Is You and some other light puzzle/platformers besides ER, like GRIS and Mekabolt. so that should give an idea of how difficult they are. as far as I’ve gotten, it doesn’t take long to survey the puzzles and figure out what you need to do, and once you solve the puzzles it is very satisfying.

This is a game where you control a ball and guide it through a bunch of short levels trying to turn all gray tiles to orange. Let’s look over some positives first:

-Encouragement of customization

-Bonus content

-Idea that can be cleverly expanded upon

Now, let’s look at the negatives:

-Inconsistent level difficulty

-Inconsistent level quality

-Some mechanics are only in 1 or 2 levels

-Exploit where you can jump on a wall infinite times

-Boring visuals

Is this the worst game I’ve ever seen? No. But I don’t think it’s worth your $10. The developer seems to be a good guy, looking at some of their other products, and can put quality into their games. This game just doesn’t seem it though. The idea can definitely be expanded on, and improved.

DIERY HEAVEN

DIERY HEAVEN

I bought Diery Heaven and it took up to the ten minute mark before I had an idea on who this game was designed for and maybe another ten to fully confirm that theory. Diery Heaven is a secret fetish game for sadomasochists and I know that because I’m pretty sure completing it makes me one of them. At minimum I’m an unpaid intern. At numerous points I was ready to tear my hair out and it hurt so good.

Diery Heaven is a game that costs less than two bucks and feels like one of those things you put together as a final project at a game dev boot camp. It consists of five jumping puzzles and I use the term puzzle in the loosest sense. Essentially you are making precision jumps over a variety of moving and stationary platforms and dodging barrels that fall from the sky.

About

A simpl…. HOW IS THIS SIMPLE! ITS QUITE HARD OK~

What I like

  • short game (i finished this in 1 hour)

  • i stream this and viewers just laugh when i keep falling from obstacles.

What I don’t like like

  • there’s one obstacle i can’t climb up the normal way as i’m unable to find the trick and had to find creative way to pass it

  • no achievements for completing the game

  • “E” practically didn’t do anything though it said to press E to interact

This game is awesome. I can’t remember the game i was able to enjoy so much, playing with my buddies after a hard workday. The gameplay is super simple, enjoyable and relaxing, levels are very well made. Recommend everybody just to give it a try)))

An entertaining and interesting game to relax your brains and train them a little. A bunch of interesting levels will not let you get bored. If you work in an office and are tired of playing classic games (Solitaire, Minesweeper) then this game will suit you. My rating is 10/10.

Goblins and Grottos

Goblins and Grottos

As an early adopter of the game in 2015, my original review was incredibly biased so I’ve decided to go back to this game and re-review it with a bit more integrity.

The developers of this game were incredible ; they were quick to fix bugs, incredibly enthusiastic about their game and updates were about as frequent as the things they added and fixed included.

Pros are as follows

A catchy and memorable soundtrack

Far from original, but charming and suitable-to-the-story artwork

A very humourous, meta and interesting story that takes a fresh perspective on the MMO genre and twists it into a fun singeplayer experience

Real player with 48.7 hrs in game

I’ve been obsessed with this game for the past week or so, and I think it’s high time I tried to put into words all the things I enjoy about it.

Goblins and Grottos is an engrossing puzzle-platformer with a sense of humor that will appeal to anyone who is familiar with MMO culture or fantasy tropes. You play as the nameless Goblin, whose entire family was slaughtered by a level 100 paladin who appears to have been power-levelling his n00b buddy. On your quest for revenge you’ll make your way through caves, dungeons, and forests inhabited by adventurers that call to mind every sort of MMO player you can think of – and all of them are trying to kill YOU for phat lewtz and xp. You’re only a weak little unarmed goblin, unable to gain levels like the adventurers do (and they do – if you die they gain experience and can level up and gain better abilities!) and unable to really fight back except through your own cunning, using the environment to either make your escape or defeat those who would hunt you.

Hamster Logic 3D

I really wanted to like this game. I’m ordinarily a big fan of this type of simple puzzle platformer but the game was just tedious and re-used large chunks of levels. The physics feel inconsistent and nothing seems to quite work right. Some of the levels just seem like random garbage with no rhyme or reason to how blocks are placed or what the actual challenge is. Also, after spending hours on it with a friend, I am 99.9% sure that there is no possible way to beat level 31. We found the platform off to the left (which is already kind of an annoying troll move), but there’s no way to get the large black ball out of the way and you can’t get enough height to jump over it without hitting the ceiling. I would love to be proven wrong so I can beat this game but I don’t believe it is possible. Maybe my brain is too hamster-sized but this game just ain’t it.

So i was trying to play this game for my Youtube channel (Swevenski), And this game is a treat ill tell you what! You are a Hamster rolling around in a ball trying to find sunflower seeds while your battle against the scary climates of blue rooms and black balls that instantly kill you.. The hamster pretty much is a god that looks the wrong way when your rolling around and doesn’t give a crap about it. He just really wants his damn seeds i guess.. His steel cage never breaks even when bashing against the wall at the whole 2 miles per year your going and you can only die by falling into the abyss of nothingness where i assume you just starve to death or you get eaten by the black balls that im a summing are the demon hamsters that never got there seeds and also died, If you have 50 cents please buy this game and if you don’t just go in to your couch cushions or ask the homeless man down the street and you will get it! and once you do your life will change forever! Please by this game and get my man some seeds!!

Hazmat Hijinks: Total Meltdown

Hazmat Hijinks: Total Meltdown

I can’t recommend this game enough, it’s amazing! The dev managed to combine the feelings of both Super Mario World and Old School Puzzle Games (such as Chip’s Challenge and Sokoban) into one amazing package, at this price its a steal and you’d be insane not to grab it. The main levels are fun as all hell and then the secrets, the secrets, this game is just jam packed with them, if you like a good puzzle with lots more to find under the surface, Hazmat Hijinks is your game.

I was looking for a mac-friendly Chip’s Challenge alternative, and this game definitely delivered. I’m about 10 hours in and I think the puzzles, graphics, story, and sound are all great. My only criticism is that some of the “tricks” feel impossible to figure out on your own… I have relied a lot on the let’s play that’s linked from the game’s website. I wish I could have figured out some of these puzzles on my own but would try a level a dozen or more times and never be able to figure the answer out because it’s a brand new function within the game. With that said, the let’s play is interesting to watch to get some additional background information from the creator, and there’s a really cute PDF manual you can download too. Overall, I do think it’s great, and very much worth the price.
