BOT.vinnik Chess: Combination Lessons

BOT.vinnik Chess: Combination Lessons

tldr; If you play Chess, get this.

To start, I don’t think anyone will play this for 34 hours unless you leave your PC on with this up like I did–but I still highly recommend it for new-to-okayish players looking for insight. I’ve ran through it a couple times & if it hasn’t improved my Chess game, it’s at least given me some new angles and strategies to think about. The aesthetic and presentation are perfect and make the techniques easier to digest, and it’s the price of a cup of coffee. All considered, it makes grabbing this the easiest decision you can make in Chess.

If you are a beginner (like me), you will probably like it. It teaches you some basic and easy chess tactics, and I’m sure you’ll have fun with the mostache guy. But something that perhaps some people will not like is that the mustache guy wom’t explain why your wrong movements are wrong, if you want to know what you shouldn’t do that, you will have to think about it for yourself.

Anyway, even if it’s a short game, it is really cheap and you will probably learn something useful from it, so I recommend it.

I didn’t like this quite as much as Combination Lessons. Some of it felt too similar to the material already covered. That said, is it worth the time & money to buy and play this one? Oh absolutely heck yes. You definitely want to get and play both if you play Chess.

What would I like to see more of? Bot.vinnik opening moves & mid-game strategies. I need these to exist.

Not gonna lie here: presentation is awful, but hell if this isn’t a GREAT game to learn more about chess. I was seriously and very pleasantly caught off guard by this one.

VERY recommended for chess amateurs and veterans alike, it’ll teach you some chess concepts and present you with situations that’ll help you think 2-3 moves in advance and hopefully improve your board vision and playstyle, definitely the kind of thing every chess enthusiast should look into.

What a good game. I liked the AudioDesign.

It was difficult for me at first, but I ended up getting the hang of it at the end

Pretty easy, only got stuck on level 23. Dig the concept, hard to say whether this will improve my chess game until I play.

Chess Brain

This game has interested chess related puzzles. To see everything moving and trying to figure out next move is challenging. Sometimes it melts your brain making calculations for every move, and because of that, I love this game.

I really wanted to see a sequel for this game. :)

Short chess puzzle game about finding the right path through a board without encountering an enemy piece. Good. Level reset and you can redraw your path as many times as you need to.

Chessformer

Chessformer

Chessformer is a grid-based puzzle platformer with Chess pieces. Each of the pieces moves as expected, but they fall down after moving and can’t move again until they stop falling. Pieces also stack on top of each other which is key to solving most levels. The goal in each level is to capture the opposing king, who is lazy and never moves, so don’t worry about losing any pieces.

Knight’s Retreat

Knight’s Retreat

Knight’s Retreat is a simple chess-themed puzzler which requires careful planning to complete its 80 stages. While the difficulty isn’t consistent, it’s easy enough to play in short sessions, ideal for break times or multiplayer queues. It’s cheap, suitable for all ages, and awards achievements for completion.
Pros

✅ Easy to understand, with ample tutorial stages

✅ Pleasing low poly design, including different environments

✅ Chill music and SFX

✅ Multiple mechanics (sliding panels, flip switches, linked pieces)

Too many bugs when using the undo button, such as some tiles becoming inaccessible, and sometimes it seems to undo a few moves at once at once (I’m not certain of this, but I sometimes notice that a few of my knights have somehow moved backwards on their own, which I assume was caused by me while undoing a different move), and when you move a piece onto a tile with a button and then undo the move, the effect of the button is reversed but the piece remains on the button. This game only allows you to undo one move per turn, so you can imagine how frustrating it can be when the undo button is as wonky as it is. This isn’t a problem for most levels, as this is a relatively easy puzzle game, but there is one particular level near the end that is significantly more complicated than the rest which I’ve been trying hard to solve, but the wonkiness of the undo button keeps forcing me to restart the whole level, which eventually led to me giving up on it.

Edit: Updated playthrough with ALL the normal levels here: https://youtu.be/Zr-5X2c3k8Y

Great game but god dang is it difficult not sure if it was the alcohol or the fact my chess I.Q. is 42 but it was a fun little brain boggler killing the Generals was extremely satisfying after trying not to get spanked by some simp rooks/bishops. Not sure how to get all the achievements since I hid in a bush and didn’t get the hide in a bush achievement (got faito achievement at later date which has been included in video thanks to user carmylle on steam) but if you need help on any of the levels. my play through with all levels here: https://youtu.be/xhNwdCEFKZo

Really great minimalist puzzle game. The recent update tripled the content of an already great game, definitely worth the price here. Knights are my least favorite chess piece, but playing them as a ninja may have changed my view of them.

The difficulty scales wonderfully right up until the last level which is very very hard, but just enough to where you feel accomplished when you beat it. The only negative I have here is you can’t pan the camera, only zoom and rotate. Other than that this is a standout of the minimalist puzzle genre.
