I got this game as an impulse buy at 2 am while talking to my friend on discord and man I don’t regret it. After multiple months and around 135 hours, I have gotten every achievement and I loved playing every second of this game. For an RPG maker based game it has such impeccable charm, the characters were lovable, and the story was great. I really did go into this game blind and that’s what I recommend everyone do. The story had a bit a bit of a slow start, but it was such an experience to see it unfold at the end and watch all the pieces of the puzzle come together. If you are thinking of buying this, do, you will not regret it.

Fran Bow

Fran Bow

If there was a need to describe this game in three words, it’d be either “cute & macabre psychosis” OR “psychotic & macabre cuteness”. It also happens to be a fantastic point’n’click, but really – let’s admit, it’s the gruesome/adorable screenshots that sell the game.

“Fran Bow” is the rare beast of adventure games (sort of like Tim Burton’s films) that combines gore, horror, implications of behavior representing the worst of humanity and all-out weirdness with an adorable heroine (having her popping pills to switch realities) and still manages to appeal to wide audience. The look of the game speaks for itself – the art style and animations are unique in one of the most chilling ways despite being hand-drawn in a sort of cartoon-ish manner. When Fran takes a Duotine pill, the reality swap is jarring, creepy and shivers-inducing at the same time. Shows you that there’s no need to necessarily employ fancy effects to bring some much-needed dread into your gameplay. A talented 2D artist can take care of that just as well.

Fran Bow is the story of the game’s titular little girl who, at the start of the game, experiences the death of her parents and is stuffed away into a mental institution. Fran is determined to get out of the loony bin and meet up with her cat, Mr. Midnight, who she is convinced will help guide her and form a new life with her beloved Aunt Grace. However, some form of shadowy demon warns her to stay in the mad house, for if she leaves he will hunt her down, and do worse things than she could ever imagine. The game’s got clever writing, interesting characters (with Fran Bow’s childish yet twisted thought-process and approach to things stealing the show), mixed with interesting imagery, thoughtful but not entirely too difficult puzzles, a gripping story with themes of psychological horror, satanism, and cult behaviors, the twistedness of children, and real horror ranging from pedophilia to the history of mental care.

Proof-read the English, tested the game, and wrote a fully comprehensive guide. Safe to say - I’ve got this game down to a T! TL;DR - buy the game, play it, and enjoy! Easy 100%er and very enjoyable.

Backstory:

When I played the first DISTRAINT, I honestly wasn’t expecting much more than an easy 100% achievement game to help knock my stats up for a very low price - my expectations were instead surpassed. The storyline was a little twee and fairly predictable, but clichés and linear / predictable stuff exists for a reason: it’s what humans like. I realised the entire game had been written, composed, drawn, really just everything’d by ONE guy, and consequently rose in my estimation. I followed Jesse on social media, and idly came across a post some months later about a sequel, and his new DISCORD server. I joined the server, and started getting hyped up for the sequel. Then he picked me to proof the English :O so I really have seen this game since its infancy!

After a three year gap, Jesse Makkonen’s back with Distraint 2! If you’ve read my first review, you’d know that I was so moved by the mature, depressing c’est la vie story of an ordinary person making one bad choice after another. It wasn’t lengthy but its message was profound. The ending may have bummed out and sparked some speechless responses.. But thankfully if you’ve kept your hopes up- Distraint 2 picks up immediately from what happens to Price after that screen cut to black. How much lower can Price sink into?

Burn Me Alive is a pseudo-psychological horror game in the walking simulator game space. Your wife and kid got burnt to toast and were buried in the cemetery, your therapist should have clued you in on, probably wasn’t the best choice for a grieving husband/dad. Throw in a whole bunch of cigs and booze and Satan just starts coming out of ya! Burn Me Alive is almost too stereotypical for a game like this. It sounds like a metal song name or a movie or a book, sadly generic with little impacts.

Decarnation

Decarnation

Where do you run when the monsters are chasing you from inside your mind?

Explore a haunting world, both real and metaphorical, and find the keys needed to battle inner and outer monsters. Get caught up in an intensely emotional story unfolding in a malignant, elaborate setting. Experience diverse gameplay featuring twisted puzzles, threatening creatures, lovecraftian environments, and metaphorical minigames.

Decarnation takes inspiration from the best 2D adventure-horror and survival-horror games from the past eras, as well as cult movies from Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue) and David Lynch (Mulholland Drive).

Paris, 1990. Gloria is at the end of her rope. A struggling cabaret dancer dealing with the fraying of her relationships, career, and self-esteem, she takes on a new artistic endeavor sponsored by a mysterious benefactor. Would the generous proposal be Gloria’s lucky break, or something worse?

A survival story with layered psychological stakes, Decarnation explores the contrast between battling limitations in the physical realm, and the subconscious landscapes one can’t escape.

Decarnation is an emotional, startling story-driven experience that will keep you on your toes until the very end.

Decarnation mixes traditional survival horror elements (cryptic puzzle to solve, inhospitable environments to explore, lethal predators to avoid, terrifying boss to defeat, etc.) with a wide variety of symbolic minigames (puzzles, reflexes, rhythm, etc.) accounting for real life situations (performing a cabaret show on stage) or metaphorical ones.

Once uncovered, key elements of Gloria’s life aid her in defeating monsters in her dreams in unique battles that marry the grotesque and the sublime to represent her struggle for survival. Overcoming challenges in her dreams strengthens Gloria against real life difficulties, and her real life issues create new challenges in her dreams.

Gulman 4: Still alive

Gulman 4: Still alive

Imagine if the cool edgy main character who was kicking ass, like B.J Blazkowicz, Serious Sam Stone, DOOMGUY, Master Chief, or Duke Nukem was hit by some wizard out of nowhere and transformed into a horrible gay looking russian guy called Gulman who crashes on a jungle for no shit reason and whose mission was to get some stupid ass magic orbs which surprisingly you are in the right area to find them and to defeat some edgy antagonist throughout the whole game.

Why do I own this game, well here is the story how it all started……

Real player with 128.1 hrs in game

Gulman 5 is 100x times better than this, this feels waaaaaaaaaaaaay too long. Most of the levels look the same and it’s just like you’re spending countless hours in a very low quality and no budget russian eurojank purgatory, with the same background ambience sounds from beginning to end with no music.

It was NOT cool to not tell the player that he needs to shoot the glowy pillars to stop the big demon boss from regaining all his health (I spent ages killing him over and over until I realised those pillars even existed) and it was NOT cool to have a lava maze with eight statue slots but you actually just need seven statues to continue and you have to leave a certain spot free (I spent ages searching for the non existant 8th statue)

I really enjoyed this take on a horror game. At least it has a story unlike others that just thrust you in with a flashlight and just run. Not spoiling but I enjoyed the ending as well. Came as a bit of a shock. The bosses were fun as well. Overall, thoroughly pleasant experience!

Just finished a playthrough and over all I liked the game. The story was interesting, and it kept me wanting to find more clues to get the full backstory.

The first level was intense. The sense of claustrophobia being in the house with the unknown entity stalking you was real.

The second level was a nice break from that closed in feeling, but still a challenge to remember where you were and what you needed to do next.

The third level I struggled with a bit. It’s very small and I missed a couple clues that would have made it easier on me.
