GET EVEN

GET EVEN

Disclosure: I maintain the Walking Simulator group. I played about 75% of them, and I consider myself a bit of an expert in the genre since I fell in love with “Dear Esther” 13 years ago. With 35+ h of gameplay behind me, this is probably the most in-depth review you’ll read.

Summary:

With almost 20 hours of exploration (i played 35, going through multiple’branches'), multiple ending and endless twists and turns, decision trees that impact the storyline while staying ‘true’ to the walking simulator genre, well, “Get Even” colored me bloody impressed! It even allows for perfectly good action/gunplay! I must admit this title totally took me by surprise.

After playing a fair amount, I managed to complete the game and gather most of the collectibles in the game (a few are hidden so well apparently, I failed to find them even after replaying them multiple times).

As for myself, I have waited quite some time for a game with this kind of theme.

This review stays as spoiler free as possible, telling only things that are either given by trailers already, or necessary to get an overall grip over the story line.

Overview

Get Even is a First Person Shooter with simple stealth mechanics. There is a strong focus on a mysterious, thrilling story line which develops into a more and more emotional trip as you progress further into the game. Although the game states being “psychological horror” and a few situations clearly gave me a little jump, you don’t need to prepare yourself for a scary game.

Great game!! Easily one of the

! scariest games out there , in my opinion! I like how

! horrifying it manages to be without jumpscares , not a lot of games can do that. The sprites are amazingly well done, especially the

! nightmare sprites. . Though if I were to have one complaint, the ending, at least in the route I played, was pretty confusing to me. I wasn’t 100% sure what was happening. But still amazing game, i feel like a monster after playing this, i’m sorry Anatoly 😔

THIS IS NOT A GAME FOR KIDS. It looks cute and like a regular visual novel and it’s not at all.

Story: You play a mysterious 5th person who lives in an isolated cabin in the woods. 4 strangers come to stay with you, and you must build relationships with them and provide meals every day. A terrible storm floods the surrounding area and you can’t leave the cabin for supplies. Also there are some talking fruits and vegetables that “help” out sometimes. And what’s in the locked basement?

Gameplay: Like most visual novels you choose options that change your destiny. This game is meant for multiple play throughs. The achievements will guide you to unlock secrets, new paths, and dreams. You can fast forward the dialogue and change the speed in options. Space bar or left clicking progresses the dialogue.

Story

You play as investigative journalist “Mr. Johnson” after receiving several tips of a government cover up at a recently abandoned psychiatric hospital. All reports suggest illegal experiments taking place on the patients of the facility- and supposedly a government cover up. Detective Johnson decided to go through with this one off-books and after just a few days of preparation he sets out to explore the abandoned facility in the middle of the night, to recover patient records.

2AM: You arrive at the scene, it is a gloomy and silent night. Rain is pouring, wind flows through the air as an unsetteling feeling kicks in. Something isn’t right here, but there is only one way to figure out what it is…

Gameplay

Insaniam is a first person survival horror game, your objective is to retrieve at least five patient records for the abandoned facility.

You’ll be forced to scavenge for batteries to keep your camcorder charged, utilize the night vision mode to explore the dark, use sanity pills or stay in the light to keep sane, avoid hallucinations, while something is lurking in the darkness and so much more.

Gameplay is based around a speed run mechanic where you’ll play for shortest time to escape or longest time survived. Randomized game mechanics keep this experience fresh and increases re-playablity.

The game is not story focused but there is underlying lore that is optional to explore through text, visuals or audio.

Notch - The Innocent LunA: Eclipsed SinnerS

Notch - The Innocent LunA: Eclipsed SinnerS is the first Angels Blue novel published on Steam, and a fairly solid entry at that. Despite being clearly inspired by Higurashi When They Cry, the intriguing story, imaginative ideas and gorgeous artwork make up for a somewhat shaky translation.

The story opens with Yuhito Asakawa trapped in a dream-like world filled with death and horror. He discovers his childhood sweetheart amidst the mayhem and attempts to escape together, only to end up lost and alone before he awakens from what was only a nightmare. He soon realizes that the nightmare may not have ended as young, mutilated girls begin appearing throughout town. Determined to catch the murderer, his pursuit will lead him on a nightmarish journey that will change his understanding of the peaceful world he’s always known.

Memories are so vulnerable in the face of cruel reality. What is goodness? What is evil? What is love? What is hatred? Your world has become an inverted image in my dream…

Notch - The Innocent LunA: Eclipsed SinnerS is a Chinese Visual Novel that tells the tales of broken forms, iron wills and unbearable truths. Through my many experiences with either emotional, philosophical or psychological narrations in visual novels, I’ve rarely felt thoroughly shaken until this one little tale of loss and misunderstanding…

Birth ME Code

Birth ME Code

EDIT: Review updated to reflect the Feb 7th 2021 ending rewrite (version 1.2.1).

–—

Birth ME Code (BMEC) is solid second entry in the ABiMe series and sequel to Head AS Code.

Overall, an enjoyable experience, although not without its criminals cons. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who enjoys darker, grittier plot-heavy mysteries and visual novels.

Disclaimer: From a gameplay perspective, BMEC does NOT offer fully integrated escape room puzzles like Zero Escape nor Classroom Trials / Endless Debates like Danganronpa, so if you go in expecting either of these from this indie game, prepare to be disappointed in that regard.

I rarely write reviews, but I felt compelled to write about this… experience, I think I’ll call it. I’m a huge fan of Zero Escape and having played this developer’s first game (Head AS Code), I was counting down the minutes until its release so I could have a solid excuse to ignore the giant pile of work sitting on my desk.

So was it worth it? Yes, absolutely, 100%, without a doubt, every penny.

Birth ME Code is an ontological mystery game wherein a bunch of people are dumped in a place and told they’ve gotta play a death game for the chance to MAYBE get out alive. So yes, same premise as Zero Escape. However, this genre is less about premise and more about world building, twists, and flowcharts. Flowcharts are essential because they allow the player to live the story from all perspectives. How many times do you play a game or watch a movie and think, “I wonder what would happen if that guy died instead of this lady?” I know, frequently. It was a rhetorical question.

Cube Escape Collection

Cube Escape Collection

If you are into these sort of games, you’ll probably enjoy it. A cool collection of self-contained “escape the room” type puzzles. It’s not that good, but it’s perfectly playable.

Half the puzzles are awesome and half the puzzles are absolutely random and often don’t make any sense even after “solving” them. Thankfully, I didn’t get stuck for too long and didn’t really need too many hints. Although some things were… obscure.

Timed and arcade-y puzzles bad due to clunky controls. There are some changing expectations which is never good. The minigame puzzles are very “meh”.

“There will be blood”. “The past is never dead, it’s not even past”. “All that you touch, you change”.

Wow, what a trip! I am still reeling from the experience of playing this fantastic collection of puzzle games! Developed by Dutch developer Rusty Lake and heavily inspired by Twin Peaks, the Cube Escape collection offers nine stellar Rusty Lake games that kept me enthralled and busy for many hours. The puzzles can be fiendishly difficult but the game somehow has a visceral rhythm and theme to it, making playing it almost a meditative and surreal experience.
