Klang 2

Klang 2

Playing this game for 59 hours, I definitely can say I adore this game. Being the first person to review this game (probably), along with getting the first two PFC’s on 60hz on two of the hardest songs in the game on fast mode (in beta release), the gameplay is insanely addicting and the music is a real banger.

The gameplay is incredibly simple with only swipes, taps, and holds, but has a fairly deep and challenging execution, especially on keyboard and mouse. Fast mode accentuates this even more, with tight timings and fast-approaching notes.

[Won a beta key in a wishlist milestone giveaway, did some pre-launch testing.]

I have been waiting for this game to come out for five years, and did it meet my expectations?

holy fuck yes it did

Klang 1 held a very special place in my heart for mostly sentimental reasons, along with it feeling like a one of a kind experience. I have no idea how to properly express how that game makes me feel, but it was incredible. However, it lacks polish; a playthrough without encountering any bugs whatsoever is probably impossible.

Anomalies

Anomalies

SUMMARY: A graphical toy to make weird, surreal spacescapes and the oddities that inhabit them, from playing with sliders to just randomziing items. On top of that, you get odd soundscapes that play along. A way to just mess around, or a way to create relaxing - or disturbing - backgrounds on your computer or tv display.

Anomalies is a graphical toy that some may call a glorified screen saver - fortunately it’s both!

Basically you can randomize or set a bunch of parameters, that then make surreal spacescapes that you can watch while strange music plays. Depending on your choices, you might watch stars circle by as you observe a nebula, be caught among strange particles, or hover in front of a bizarre tentacular space creature. Or a combination.

This is a really interesting piece of software. It is good to have around to either dip into casually or have a longer session. There can be some nice surprises. I just came up with a not very spectacular creation from the visual point of view, but it has a very nice ethereal sound. Tweaking parameters and hunting and rummaging are great fun. I have got some more choices of wallpaper too.

One of VR"s most early kaleidoscopic music video dealies. Should be worth a dollar. It might have also been bundled with another set of experiences, I don’t remember. I’m probably thinking of something else. The music a funky dubstep dealie with strange sounds, so, up my alley for sure.

! I tried real hard to spell kaleidoscopic the first time correctly, and failed. I tried again just now looking at the correct spelling and failed. https://youtu.be/bUvpdrg90XM

Very disappointed at this time. Currently there is NO infinity mode for ANY of the levels in the game. In R2 I could get lost in any level for half an hour or more, but now I feel sluggish. I know I only mastered (and near mastered) a few levels in this iteration, but soon I’ll have to put down the game because trying to high-score in this time trial mode is not my style. All I need is a button in practice mode to let me have it my way, but you decided to not implement it. Am I supposed to go back an iteration to NGs to have it my way?

Definitely more than 15mn contrary to some reviews!

(More content was added after initial release)

Some users don’t pay attention and miss most of the experience.

This is not fast food, this is not a game or a thing you have to try to speed run.

Why not taking some slow time in there, relax and enjoy the show?

Many interactions are hidden, delicate and add replay value, there is even a secret ending.

This is not for everyone:

If you are a gamer in a hurry: don’t buy it.

If you are looking to be fully immersed surrounded by music and FXs, enjoy every polygons, music notes and pay attention to the cues and the cryptic story… then go for it.

A truly beautiful experience. The detail and the complexity of everything around you is so amazing, and the music makes it all come alive. Lots of genuine “wow” moments.

I can’t wait for what’s next in this universe.

Edit:

One tip for players is to look up in the “menu” area. I think you need to view the main story part first to unlock them, but there are three pentagonal flower shapes above you to the left and right that open up and take you to other scenes/modes. I had no idea until I read the store page that mentioned the added scenes. Anyway, I was very happy to discover this.

Holodance

Holodance

I’ve tried a few of the popular VR rhythm games: Beat Saber, McOsu, Airtone, and Holodance

Music selection

Holodance and McOsu support osu! beatmaps, and Beat Saber has its own unofficial library of songs (requires a mod).

Only McOsu does not include any songs, and only Airtone does not support custom songs.

With Holodance, I usually used the ability to select a random song within a difficulty range.

Gameplay

With custom songs, Holodance provides three ways of hitting notes:

At 71 years old I’m quite certain most other players of this VR game are considerably younger than I am. I just started playing it yesterday. I’ve logged in 2.2 hours of play so far, gathered 10,200,000 points, and am enjoying it a lot. I exercise close to 3 hours a day, and this game will now add a bit more to that. Primarily arm exercise of course, but arms need exercise too.

This game is different in that you are not just hitting targets flying at you, you have to use your brain too. You need to quickly determine what type of target is coming and where you need to hit it, and then move your arm in the correct direction to capture that orb and get the points for it. Plus you have very little time to make these determinations.

The Polynomial - Space of the music

The Polynomial - Space of the music

I do NOT recommend this game to discerning gamers. I HIGHLY recommend this game to someone who is looking for a cool thing to have on one’s LED Projector wallscreen while playing phat beats or haunting melodies from one’s “altered states of consciousness special music” folder.

I use Winamp’s milkdrop for the beginning of the party, and then when guests are looking to relax and play simple mindless no-consequence gaming in the smoking room we switch to the Polynomial and the music never skips a beat.

  • ‘Be your own DJ.’ -

The Polynomial catapults you into a space arena, with colorful stars and lights illuminating your endless surroundings.

Controlling your own little spaceship, shooting ‘enemy’ objectives and gather power-up items makes it feel like an all classic space-shooter game.

It’s more a case of floating around, attacking anything that comes in your direction, exploring the intriguing and trippy world.

DMT: Dynamic Music Tesseract

DMT: Dynamic Music Tesseract

Everyone who owns a VR headset, doesn’t have trouble with motion sickness, and is a music lover needs to buy this lovely little gem. Seeing a visualizer react to music with your own eyes in 3D is something that really needs to be experienced to understand how amazing it really is.

As far as I see it, there are two ways to enjoy this “game” and both provide fairly different experiences. The first way is to put on an album you love to explore. Let yourself get lost in the visuals reacting to the album that you have chosen. Just relax and let it wash over you. If you can really focus on the music and enjoy the view it is a very unique experience that everyone should try if they aren’t prone to motion sickness.

If you found your way here because you were actually looking for a vr experience like this and not by sheer coincidence, then you are in the right place. DMT provides a trippy, surreal experience through randomly generated, audio responsive visuals. DMT is still in development, and it shows sometimes more, sometimes less. I have not noticed any major problems that would require for example resets, at most DMT is a bit rough around the edges. The pattern generation is surprisingly smooth, and sometimes the transitions work jaw-droppingly well. There are a lot of different patterns and shapes, and colors are utilized well alongside them. It seems that audio will sometimes affect even brightness and speed of the visuals. Well worth its price in my opinion.

INDIE GAME OF THE DECADE!!! OMG, how did this gem slip by under the radar? I can’t even believe this game was developed on the id Tech 4 (Doom 3) game engine. Oh how I envy the developers so much. This is one of those moments where I’d say, “I wish I made a game like this!”

They did something incredible with the music in this game. I’ve always been seeking one where the music is completely dynamic based on the actions you take or do. By dynamic I mean you have a base rhythm but can add instruments at any interval and make it sound just like one musical masterpiece. And this game achieves this!

“It’s like psychedelic shaders - the game. I watched nothing but colours for five straight minutes and somehow it was the most rewarding ending a game has ever offered.”

I got Dyad some time after I first saw it being played by its developer, Shawn McGrath, on a Twitch stream. It looked incredible. Like, I wasn’t sure what to think. I just wanted to have a go. After eventually buying and playing the game for myself, I’m still not sure what to think. It’s probably better if you just don’t think, plug your senses into the game and feel it. Feel the game. Feel the game playing you as you play the game.
