The description of this game does not do it justice. Roguelike based on mathematical puzzles sounds like an arithmetic quiz program or someone packaging puzzles in a mediocre framework. One of the reviews even said it would be ok without the math. I envisioned puzzles where there was a correct solution every time.

This is first a roguelike (oldschool roguelike), and the ‘puzzles’ are, like a game play in awell designed roguelike, emergent - naturally arising from the procedurally generated world. There are often many good solutions to the puzzles, and the game play revolves around finding good enough solutions, and using your resources wisely.

Very cool, but very specific game. If you are a mathematician, programmer, roguelike fan or just a nerd, most likely, this game is for you. Otherwise… Anyway, if you’re not outright scared with the concept of killing ancient beasts with the power of math, you should give it a try.

You can start with the free version . Keep in mind, though, that free version lacks some recent and/or steam-specific features.

All in all a great game. It has that old school feel as advertised. Like games from the ancient 80’s and 90’s, it doesn’t hold your hand and challenges you to beat it. Victory is far from certain. I haven’t beat it yet but, when I do, that feeling of achievement is sure to follow. In contrast to the empty feeling from beating adventure games that autopilot the player to certain victory, I prefer games like this one.

There’s a lot more to the crafting system than I expected. I was surprised as this game has more crafting structures than most other game out there, and not just some one time use stations either. They all get used over and over.

REVIEW UPDATE #2

I am glad that the “instant noodles” nest exploit, armor, and repair bug has been addressed, it is a much better gaming experience now.

I wish there there were an easier way to create and join servers (think “Don’t Starve).

I still love the game & I think that you should buy it.

30 days to survive

30 days to survive

Bought the game on sale, and honestly enjoyed it. Not just because it was cheap, but it’s a challenging game, with simple graphics. There are a few bugs that I’ve encountered, and the RNG could use some tuning up(I got a bear as my very first enemy, and that peashooter doesnt do enough to kill it), but it has potential. It’s not a bad game, its more of an RNG side scroller.

The bugs so far

What looks like a combat shotgun, if picked up, can be picked up multiple times, and bugs the inventory to the point of game crash.

30 days to survive is a zombie survival, side scrolling platformer. It’s the first of its kind that I’ve seen personally. At the very least the devs should be commended for attempting it. The physics are a little wonky, but it fits well with its blocky, Lego-man-esque art style.

The controls and game mechanics take some getting used to. Right out of the gate can be pretty unforgiving. With its quick hunger and energy depletion, coupled with zombies that get little to no knockback from attacks. The items are RNG heavy, so you can get very unlucky with starving to death or losing the ability to run and jump. Progression hinges upon using the save function at your house to build up an arsenal of gear to survive with. It can be easily exploited by save scumming, but to some degree you kind of have to in order to live beyond 5 stages away from home. There is a sewer system that you can discover that acts as a sort of checkpoint system. There is a taxi that can appear randomly which you use to fast travel home. For the most part though, the further away from home you go, the further you have to walk back. Items respawn after moving two stages beyond, so you have a chance to find enough food and energy to make the journey back. Enemies respawn as well though, so it isn’t an easy decision to risk the journey.

Needs more development time and testing alot of stuff only half works and the inventory system needs alot of work. They need to change the inventory system as well as change the way your character gets energy replenished, it is currently too tedious to eat/drink. Cannot recommend this game, especially at that price. I see what they were going for and it is a cool concept, but for the price there is much better games for the same if not cheaper. I would like to recommend this game and give a good review, but in its current state I cannot. Hopefully it will get better and I think they should take ideas from games like Space Engineers on how to execute this games functions much better. For now this review will remain negative until much needed improvements are made.

Quinterra

Quinterra

It is merely an okay game. The tactics portion of it isn’t very in depth, often times feeling very Rock-Paper-Scissors like, and the forces fit into at most two of those. The graphics are fine. The UI is usable though not helpful in any way and the text for the mission requirements is super tiny. Yet the missions end up feeling very much the same one after another, which would be fine if not for the Rock-Paper-Scissors element mentioned before. You can find yourself deep into a game and then because you are playing a force that has to group up (Lycans) vs. an enemy who poisons everything there is honestly nothing to do but quit the battle and find a port to get your morale back up.

Real player with 20.1 hrs in game

Summary & Positives

Quinterra has a really strong underlying mechanic set, loosely reminiscent of a faster-paced Faeria. Whilst highly comparable to a card based roguelite (like Slay the Spire or Monster Train), it’s not really fair to lump it into that genre.

The combat map is composed of tiles, each of which produce different ‘colours’. Each turn, you pick a tile up which lets you produce a new type of unit (a bit like setting up a building to produce a unit for you in a strategy game) for that battle, with some limits. Over time, you can sequence your tile collection in a way that lets you pick up more ‘colours’ to use, both to get a wider variety of units to play with but also to give yourself a variety of options to augment and enhance those units more with added effects.

What an interesting game!

The video trailer and game description give a decent overview of some of the main aspects of the gameplay, which involve using (some subset of) your available tools to solve a puzzle in the current room. The large number of tools that each interact with a number of different room elements creates many puzzles that can be solved in multiple ways. And after you get through the tutorial zone and perhaps a few short individual failed runs, you discover that the game is not merely about solving a series of individual room puzzles. It’s also a resource-management game, where you must realize when rooms have multiple solutions, and then carefully choose which solution–and thus which set of resources–you want to spend on the current room in order to preserve resources you know you will need in another room.

I’ve been playing this game since its beta release and I am shocked that there’s not more hype. The puzzles are incredibly addicting and I am not even close to running out of gameplay. I think that the art is really classic and simple, which is really refreshing, since my computer can’t really handle graphically intensive games. I really hope that other potential players read this review and get the game so we can make a Herman Electro community!

NEO Scavenger

NEO Scavenger

NEO Scavenger is a turn-based, post-apocalyptic, survival roguelike with perma-death. I also now sometimes fondly call it a Procedural Death Michigan. It’s mean, immersive, annoyingly addictive and seems to strongly dislike players wearing right boots (left boots are fine).

Basically, you scavenge around (and die after the building crumbles on you), fight other people scavenging around (and die valiantly with monkey wrench in hand) or try to talk to them (and die a turn later by drinking a celebratory made-it-through-the-turn sip of poisoned water), try to kill creatures that would like to eat you almost as much as you’d like to eat them (and die hungry), craft items to help you survive (and die warm because your fire alerted every deadly thing around), keep track of your hunger, thirst, diseases and injuries (and die very informed) or try to get to the seemingly last big hub of civilization (and die trying to get there; or trying to get in; or after you get in; or on your way back out).

Picked this up on a lark, as I am heavily into survival games lately. I was hesitant due to the low res, pixel graphics, but man am I glad I took a chance on this!

What stands out immediately is choice and consequence. You can’t have it all. You have to build a character with weaknesses, and weaknesses can just be not having some of the skills you might like to have, or it can be actual weaknesses to give you points to get more benefits.

You might take Fragile for example, making you take more damage than normal if you get hit, and you might do this because you really want the points it gives you to take Trapping so you can make fire right away at the start of the game.
