Pangea

Pangea

Distant future. Research spaceship faces with unknown physical phenomenon in a faraway space.

The outcome is safe - the spaceship manages to overcome the anomaly without visible consequences. Though, on arriving to the Earth, the crew discovers it not the same way, as it should be. It seems, the anomaly represented a point of contact of several parallel layers of reality, where the events were happening a little bit differently. When the spaceship went out of the anomaly, it appeared in another layer of reality, not in the same when it got into the anomaly.

In that reality the Earth was not affected by a meteorite, which killed dinosaurus. Giant reptiles remained the dominant form of life, and mammals were poorly developed. As the result - the intelligent life and signs of civilization appeared much later, and by the current moment the society is on the level of Stone Age.

Primitive tribes and dinosaurs, magic and futuristic technologies are waiting for you.

In the “skirmish” mode you have to find and destroy the other players bases. In the campaign, you must complete the mission task.

For each victory, new unit types will be unlocked.

Pangea is a hybrid of turn-based strategy, tabletop game and roguelike. Heroes' moves across the playing field are determined by dice rolls. Turn-based tactical battles take place in a separate hex based arena.

  • Explore procedurally generated maps full of prizes and dangers

  • Enjoy colorful tabletop game styled graphics

  • Lead 4 unique factions with their own set of units and structures: a warlike primitive tribe, guardians of the forest thickets, terrible monsters and highly developed aliens from a parallel world

  • Influence the playing field - change the landscape, construct buildings and set traps

  • Unlock many bizarre creatures and lead them into battle

  • Uncover the secrets of the Pangea world in a story campaign

The Curse Of Yendor

The Curse Of Yendor

True roguelikes are hard to find, especially the ones that are commercialized and sold on Steam. The Curse of Yendor is one of these rare ones. Developed by IBOLOGY LLC (Bob Saunders), the same guy behind the cult classic Approaching Infinity , The Curse of Yendor offers a good experience for both newcomers and veterans of the roguelike genre, providing both the traditional YASD experience as well easier difficulty levels and the possibility to disable permadeath, if you wanna play it like a regular RPG.

Bought Curse of Yendor on a lark with all this extra cash I’ve got now that Marvel Heroes doesn’t want my money any more (BUE bleh).

Yendor is a turn-based rogue-a-like with charming early Ultima graphics. Under the retro hood is a lot of gaming goodness. Besides the usual monsters, loot, vendors, keys and puzzles, there are some surprises.

The procedural, modifiable, tile-based terrain system is what sold me on getting CoY. If you get a pick you can chop through stone walls, or take them down with an earthquake spell. You can shoot thorugh barred windows. You can freze water. Reeds block missiles, but if you cast fireballs in reeds, you can catch yourself on fire. Run away! Destroying the right tiles will weaken the big boss later in the game. I’d love to see a game with triple the variable terrain types as CoY, but for now, this is a lot of fun.

Wizards and Warlords

This is the good stuff. I have 13 hours played and I started playing it less than 36 hours ago. It gets the ‘one more turn’ feel just right, and has enough depth to keep things interesting, but is a bit un-optimized in terms of interface and mechanical transparency.

The Dev (yeah, the one dude making it on his own) is basically the paragon that all early access devs should try to be, constantly pushing updates and tweaks and engaging the community in respectful and productive discourse with humility and ingenuity. His turnaround time on new ideas is alarmingly fast, which is why there are multiple patches every week.

I very much wanted to this game to be great. The references to Dominion but with a different take on it.

There’s so much in the game, cool thought out magic, cool proc gen world, cool city development, cool leader development. But it’s so shallow. I didn’t care about any of my leaders, all the cities were functionally the same.

And the list of resources is insane. There’s a ton of resources to be gathering, but most have only a single use. It’s annoying to play a Fae wizard, get herbs and fairy dust, and have little use for it. You chase more resources until you realize you have no use for mithril. I’d rather have a smaller more concentrated list of resources that did something.

Close call on whether to recommend or not. However, I just can’t recommend this game. The combat is too simplistic. The UI is too clunky. The visuals are bland with poor animations and sounds. I know the game is in Early Access, but it currently feels like the game should have come out in 2016 VR. There are simply much better VR RPG games out there.

All is not bad, however, there are some good things about this game. There are several interesting mechanics. You have several spell unlocks & upgrades, along with gear with different stats. There’s lots of different enemies. The promise of randomly generated levels is alluring.

I’ve played for almost an hour and I’ve got to say this is a lot of fun so far. The creature models, effects and some of the environmental details are pleasing to the eye. There are several low-res textures as well, but that’s okay. Gesture based spell casting is always a pleasure, and the fact that you can store different spells in your other hand is a huge bonus. This so far is a really entertaining dungeon crawler and I can’t wait to sink more time into it.

Amazing Game… Simple only at first view… Its very diffcult… nostalgic game…

Im really excited to play more and more. Take a note I just enter in one dungeon and don’t explored it too much and even that I really got addicted in this game.

Congratulations to the dev team for this amazing game. I cant wait to play it much more!

The game has a very cute design and theme to it. While my initial recommendation remains unchanged, I would like to see some more polish. I am happy and thankful the dev was so quick to respond to a review for their game and look forward to seeing what future changes brings for this game.

I will likely wait for quite a bit more to be added before I give it another shot.

–- Response to Dev

Being a developer my self I of course mean no harm in my criticism. And that is the point of the review process, if the items above were addressed I’d be happy to remove them from my critique. Tho I no longer have the game to test my self, I’ll likely wait until some more updates come out before I give it another shot and update my review with anything I find at that time.

TL;DR This game is a mix of Noita and Rogue Legacy, very fun if you’re on a budget :)

I feel like I got off on the wrong foot with this game. Originally, the game didn’t work at all for me which led me to leaving a negative review (Initial Review can be found below) and also refunding the game. The developer then got back to me within a few hours of my review telling me that he had updated the game.

All excited I decided to purchase the game again and give it a second try. All the issues I had previously mentioned, were gone. I played a couple of games and had a lot of fun. The enemies were neat, the room layouts looked fairly unique and the particle effects were really good. I played a total of 5 runs (Including the tutorial).

I played it for a little while and I can say its vey fun to play, I honestly like it.

It gets a bit lagy from time to time, but its a first realese so it’s not a problem.

Siralim 3

Siralim 3

When Zack Bertok of Thylacine Studios launched Siralim 2 in 2016, he was sure there would never be a sequel, at least not in the near future. He began to work on other projects, but the more he did so, the more ideas to improve Siralim 2 he could think of. What was supposed to be a simple expansion kept getting bigger and bigger… and Siralim 3 was born.

For those who are unfamiliar with this series, Siralim is an RPG with roguelite elements in which the player trains monsters to use them in 6vs6 battles, inspired by the Enix game Dragon Warrior Monsters. What makes it different from other such games is the fact that it is virtually endless, which allows players to enjoy the game for hundreds or even thousands of hours.

Update 2: Still going strong on this game at 1392 hours. This game is excellent for being able to instantly walk away when you have something to take care of. Been using it as my side game while exploring in Elite Dangerous. The developer has slowed down on the updates, probably working on his next game. Ended up buying a copy for a friend who likes retro-styled indie games. He thanks you for Linux support!

Update: Still a good game at the 200 hour mark. New major updates were released since my review was written. More content and added an asynchronous multiplayer combat mode. You take your team and fight other teams out there. No player-to-player interaction except composing the teams, but I wouldn’t want more than that in this kind of game. The meat of the game is still in advancing incrementally through the realms, gathering loot, unlocking achievements (which increase the loot rate), and so forth. Still an awesome game.
