COSMOS

COSMOS

EDIT: Since posting my original review, the developer has gone in and addressed some of my issues. I originally did not recommend this game, but I have updated my review to reflect those changes.

Here’s what you do:

You play through vertical scrolling stages, climbing, jumping, and shooting enemies. You can aim freely of your movement with either a mouse cursor or right stick on a controller. There are six world with up to 20 short levels in each (each world varies). There are no boss battles. One hit will kill you, restarting the stage. The goal is to get to the top of each level while taking out all the enemies (and surviving).

Fun platformer run and gun game. Short, but enjoyable. The only thing I would change, though, is more customizable controls. The aiming is much easier on mouse and keyboard, but I ended up playing on controller because I prefer not using the space bar to jump.

Blaster Shooter GunGuy!

I really wanted to like this game, but in its current state, I cannot recommend it. I wrote some suggestions for the dev a month and a half ago since he appears to be active in the community discussions, but he has not addressed them despite responding to the posts above and below mine.

What’s sad is there is quite a bit of content here that most people will never see because the game is unfair with regard to taking damage. There is no delay between taking multiple hits, so falling in spikes will literally kill your three hearts in about 1 second. The lack of proper controller support is also a complete turn-off. You shouldn’t need a third-party tool when the Unity engine supports controllers already.

Blaster Shooter GunGuy likes to pretend that it’s a precision platformer yet the character movement has been implemented very poorly. There is no variable jump height, no wall jumping, and with how the game has been programmed it’s also possible for jumping to become unresponsive when near a ledge. Considering how many small platforms there are, and how many projectiles you must dodge, it’s absolutely hell to play.

The GUI is a mess, most in-game text is distorted and nearly unreadable. Controllers are supported but the keybinding graphics will not change to support this. Many buttons do not conform to what actions I’d expect them to make.

This is a game that’s always been dear to my heart ever since playing it as a child, back when I got the GBA version. It’s so obscure though that not many people know about it, and the only playthroughs I’ve seen of it online are people playing it for the first time, with little to no knowledge of the game. I always wanted someone to make some sort of guide of this game (someone that knows enough about the game to talk about almost everything, anyway), but got so fed up waiting for one that I decided to use the knowledge I got playing this game for hours as a kid to make one myself. Despite this, I figured not many people would care about it because this game never got any sort of sequel or remake, and any hopes of one were shattered when the company that made it went out of business.

Wow this was really cool. Upon some (very brief) research, it turns out this is a PC “port” of a GBA game by the same name. That’s why the graphics, sound, and everything felt so… oddly familiar to me. I had not played the original, mind you.

I LOVE the artstyle of the characters. Graphics were great, music was awesome, characters were all super adorable and nothing in the game ever felt too frustrating (except some bosses).

In depth review:

Your moveset:

Besides moving left and right and having a basic jump, you can duck and press an attack button. There’s some intricacies here though that are quite interesting. For example, if you hold “down” in the air, you’ll flip upside down and bounce on your ears to reach greater heights. You can then attack while in this state to do a sort of drill move (I honestly forgot you could to this during boss fights and thus never used it. Mainly because hit detection is too generous for the enemies to hit you so you can never get too close to them.) You can also keep pressing the attack button to widen its range around you, as well as pressing the button repeatedly in the air to spin and glide. Pressing and holding the attack will charge up an attack with super far range (I just spammed this on most bosses as they were too hard to get close to, like I said.) It was super fun pairing the ear bounce with air spins, I felt surprisingly maneuverable. Oh you can also grab a flight “power up” and climb pipes.
