Celeste

Celeste

Oh my god, this is one of the best games I have ever played. Actually, scratch that, this is one of the best games available on steam. This game was perfect from prologue to epilogue, and it was fair yet absolutely brutal. The story was so goddamn immersive and sometimes comedic; this game was an emotional roller-coaster. It also has an assist mode that encourages usage if the default game is inaccessible, instead of making fun of you like so many other games do. I had tons of fun, however, I haven’t beaten chapter 8, b sides, c sides, or chapter 9 yet. I will write more reviews of those chapters/sub-chapters once I beat them.

Simply a delightful platformer. A masterclass at level design. The core mechanics are so well made that i found myself craving for content even after 90+ hours. You keep learning new ways to overcome obsticles which makes this game infinitely replayable. Incredibly beutiful presentation and a simple, yet very touching and relatable story. If you don’t buy and play this game right this instant i am going to come to your house and steal tour shoes.

Micro Platformer

This game is one of the best platformers I’ve played. Here’s why:

1. This game is like many platformers, minus the BS. Sick of enemies whose movements are hard to control or predict? Sick of sitting around, waiting for frustrating cycles which make every death feel like a massive waste of time? My two favourite games of all-time on Steam, Celeste and Super Meat Boy, both drove me insane with features like these. This game is the first proper platformer I’ve played which doesn’t, and it’s made me realize just how much I hated those sections in both of those games. You respawn near-instantly, and it’s just pure precision platforming. No BS, no cycles, no enemies, no missiles or lasers or RNG. It’s just you versus the game.

This game is great. It has its goods and its bads though. First of all I want to praise its simplistic aesthetic, a black background with simple levels. There is no sound in this game so you can you put music on listen to that whilst playing or put a video on in the background and just have a nice stress-free time.

The bad thing is that level 1, the tutorial, and level 2 (there is nothing wrong with these levels) is nice and relaxing but then it just switches to level 3 which is a big difficulty change taking me personally a while to complete it also has to many stages to get through for a third level. If I was the developer I would put a level in between 2 & 3 and I feel like when playing both of those levels that’s when level 3 will become easier to complete.

Whether you love designing levels or just love platformers in general this game is an instant buy! With a robust level editor, a system to get your level played, tight platforming, and endless content, this is the best Maker game ever made!

I originally purchased this game to help pass the time until Mario Maker 2, but was so amazed by the level editor I never left. From creating traditional platforming levels, to complex machines, the editor has almost unlimited potential. The editor is easy to learn, but extremely deep and robust to the allow for creating even the most complex contraptions.

Levelhead is the best level maker experience on the market.

Gameplay

Some describe it as a precision platformer, but it does not have to be. Even running around the most basic levels is enjoyable because the controls, character animations and sound design are spot on.

The main distinguishing gameplay feature is the grab/throw mechanic, which adds a ton of depth to the platforming and sets it apart from established franchises. The array of carry items can be used for platforming, puzzles, combat or even currency.

1 Screen Platformer

This is a fun little platformer which all takes place on one screen. That’s nothing unusual, platform games have been taking place on one screen since the early arcade days. This one is a little different in that the whole game world can be viewed at once. I found this screen mode too much to take in, and opted for the zoomed in mode which allows you to concentrate on your immediate surroundings. I am sure there will be folks who will love the added challenge though.

There is only one world in the game, but each character choice brings something fresh. There are now five characters in the game, the developer added a couple more since release. Each character has a unique skill or mechanic which changes the game significantly. One can shoot, one can double jump and so on. One character must collect coins, one must clear the screen of fog. They are essentially mutators which change the game so drastically that each playthrough is very different and consistently challenging.

This entire game fits within a 1920×1080 pixel grid - One screen, that alone is to be praised. It also has a fair amount of replay ability, you can play as multiple characters and each character plays differently. Your first run through the level, is a pain in the arse as play in darkness, which you clear as you move through the stage. You can play with the camera zoomed in or all the way out, at this point it doesn’t matter so much because you can’t see the next obstacle waiting to dish out death. On later play-throughs, I preferred zoomed out, it helped anticipate the next hurdle.

Wings of Vi

Wings of Vi

Watch my VIDEO REVIEW here! https://youtu.be/DMhcURH5rDo

After watching the PAX Prime coverage of The Binding of Isaac Rebirth six months ago, I only recently was compelled to check out the host’s Twitch stream, MANvsGAME. I tuned in to him on his 1500th-or-so attempt to defeat “Supreme Jeh’Oul” in some game I had never heard of called Wings of Vi. What I saw floored me. The perfect pixel art and smooth animation with video-game-ass presentation, the fast-paced action of a true boss battle, the kickass sound design matching the sound effects to the boss theme… I was blown away. “What game IS this?” I said, “I see the name, but WHAT IS THIS GAME?” I could only watch for a few minutes before I had to buy the game on Steam and play it for myself.

After playing Wings of Vi for a good while I decided to do a proper review.

Difficulty

Usually I’d mention gameplay first, but I think the difficulty this presents will be the largest single deciding factor on whether you’ll like it or not.

Wings of Vi is a very brutal experience, you’ll likely find that the difficulty ramps up faster than you can learn the game, meaning you’ll have to crank out repetitive grinding to overcome some areas, boss fights especially are showstoppers, as they’re both tanky and spammy, so you’ll need to dissect their patterns to nigh perfection if you want to progress. However Wings of Vi never pulls cheap shots, everything is approriately telegraphed so the amount of foresight required to beat obstacles is sparce, however if it’s a laid back sunday platformer you’re looking for, I’d look elsewhere.

The Narrator Is a DICK

The Narrator Is a DICK

Because I voiced the narrator in this game, I am going to attempt to stay as unbiased as possible. Again, ATTEMPT!

The Narrator is a ♥♥♥♥ is your standard difficult platformer that, as quite a few have mentioned, is very similar to games like Kaizo Mario and I Wanna Be The Guy. Right from the very start, I rips a page right out of the I Wanna Be The Guy playbook. With a set of spikes on one side, and a apple that comes down on you like a great god above and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ destroys you, and every fibre of your being. And in the title, it already tells you what the game is about, and what it has; an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ narrator.

The Narrator is a DICK

From a single playthrough perspective I think most people who have viewed the trailer and perhaps read reviews of “The Narrator is a DICK” before purchasing it will be left satisfied with the game. The game is exactly as the trailer portrays. A challenging unfair platformer with an often lude and sadistic narrator who accompanies your player from start to finish. The comedy and gameplay catered to me perfectly.

Now, I enjoyed my first playthrough enough to play it again.. and again and again until I finally earned all achievements for the game. Having played this game a lot (probably more than I should have) I did notice that this game is not very friendly to the other masochists out there that are willing to torture themselves until they too earn the “HOW?!?” achievement (for those who do not already know, this achievement is unlocked after completing the entire game without dying).

Aeon Drive

I played the game for over hundreds of hours through various builds and i can say, the dev team behind it are so awesome and nice and worked their butts of to work on it day and night.

And i love pretty much everything about the game. It is fast, precise, has a banger OST and awesome graphics and is just awesome to play!

If you’re a fan of fast-paced, action-based 2D platformer and leaderboards, get it. You won’t regret it, especially if you’re a fan of speedruns.

Fun platformer with a great visual style and awesome music to boot. It always feels like there’s ways to go faster when you’re speed running and with 100 levels to play, this game offers a high replay value to continually improve. Even if you’re not a speed runner, this game offers a lot of hours of fun and is even better with a friend. Dev team is also great and values the community. Hope to see more tournaments/events in the future!
