After The End: The Harvest

After The End: The Harvest

Originally written for early access version 0.9u3 - 29May2017

After nearly 90 hours and having seen the game to its completion, I’m finally comfortable editing in a final review.

Pros:

–- The game’s description and screenshots are very accurate for what you’re getting here: an expansive open-universe RPG with the look and feel of an old action-adventure SNES game.

— Among the biggest selling points for After the End continues to be developer interaction. Throughout the early access period and post-release, The Sworn has consistently been available to field questions and bug reports in the forums. I very much value this!

UPDATED REVIEW:

In a time of loot box gambling and unfulfilled promises many devs have been screwing over customers so it’s nice to see

an early access dev actually keep true to their promises and finish their game. This game has a couple of small issues, but what it does achieve is

so fun and refreshing that it is worth peoples attention.

I originally played through and finished the game during its 0.08 alpha.

It was prety different but i loved it! You can read my original review under this one.

Global Pandemic

Global Pandemic

The plan was to experiment with Dinosaur and Zombie DNA.

The plan was NOT to create a virus, NOT to let it out, and NOT to effect the whole world.

The vast majority of the population of the planet died within months. Those that remained either “Turned” vicious and feral, or if immune to the pandemic, live their lives as bandits. All are dangerous. Not to mention the Dinosaurs…

Game Play

Set in a post-apocalyptic open world, you can create bases through building, and create items through crafting. Loot is available to find throughout the world. Manage your own inventory, and use containers such as lockers, crates, kitchen cupboards, and more.

Bandits, the Turned (Zombies), wild animals, and even dinosaurs (optionally!) will seek to kill you. You will also have to deal with thirst, hunger and the elements.

Explore the ever-growing world, full of places to discover, by running or using vehicles. From military bases, to abandoned villages - from motels to remote buildings - from hidden caves to farms - every update brings more to discover and encounter, in Global Pandemic.

An innovative skills and stats system will see your character develop in your own game style (or set all to fully developed if you prefer!).

Can you survive? Who will you be? What world will you create?

I saw no relevant reviews, so gave it a shot. I often like game books with a little RPG to them.

As of this writing, its 3 bucks to buy. Its about right. I’m fairly certain this is a first attempt from the developer to make a game. The presentation is plain, but does have some nice pictures thrown in occasionally. The font to select options is a little hard to read, and I encourage the developer to read up a little on UX design and user interface.

Its a game book, so how is it? Its pretty amateur. The writing is sometimes a bit awkward, but it gets its point across. Feel like playing the captain of a mercenary group during a zombie apocalypse and you want the 3 dollar version? Here you go.

Cards of the Dead

Cards of the Dead

At first the game felt fine…and then it becomes clear that the only way you can progress is by brute-forcing it. There’s no strategy, there’s no cleverly using character abilities. It’s just sheer dumb luck and the deck is massively stacked against you. It didn’t become apparent until after the 2 hour mark, and the second story is absolutely infuriating in how badly it is designed in regards to gameplay. REQUIRING SERUM TO USE A GUN THAT YOU HAND OUT LIKE CANDY IS BAD WHEN YOU HAVE TO USE THAT TO SURVIVE.

Real player with 9.9 hrs in game

The rules are simple, survive.

That being said, the game is really difficult. But, there’s pretty frequent auto-saves to help you along. If you enjoy RPG’s and are willing to play a card-game variant, give it a go. I’ve enjoyed it so far.

After an additional 5 hours, I can say that the game is still difficult. It’s a lot of trial and error, which I can appreciate as you’re really learning how to play as you go. I’ve just beaten the game and am only missing the 100% completion achievements, so that’s probably another hour or so, but overall, the game’s decently short. Personally, I’d recommend the game as it’s priced, especially for all those that love Indie games, but on sale, it’s definitely worth it!

Highway Wars

Highway Wars

So, I got some hours into this storytelling game. Unfortunately I can’t recommend it, I got so disappointed with the ending being so quick. I was expecting a way longer story than this.

It started off real promising and suprises around some corners and such. Then it just became more storytelling than actual decision making, making little difference to be honest.

Unless a Highway Wars 2 is out already somewhere, I wouldn’t bother playing this

It’s a shame because I’d love to reccomend this game. What is there is excellent. However, on completing what I thought was going to be the first chapter and just when I was getting into it, the game ended abuptly. For the same price you are waaaaay better off going with a longer multichapter tittle like Tin Star with 10x as much content.

Rouge Patrol

Rouge Patrol

The war between Rouge and Bleue has gone beyond either nation’s capacity to wage it. First they drafted the men and then boys… women were conscripted in turn. Now, with all spent - and surrender unthinkable - the grinding machine of war has turned to girls.

Fourteen years old, Sergeant P.G. Tails has lost everything to Bleue and will stop at nothing to achieve their destruction. But, as she leads her unit into the unending conflict, she begins to realise that the price of revenge may be paid, not by her, but the girls she has come to love. Worse, she carries a secret that puts her in more danger from her friends than her enemies…

Description

Rouge Patrol tells an epic and heartfelt story about friendship, loss, and a young girl’s conflicting drive to avenge what’s been taken while preserving what remains. You will take on the role of Sergeant P.G. Tails and, through a fusion of visual novel and stat-raiser mechanics, explore a branching and perilous narrative.

Each member of Rouge patrol has her own history and interrelationships. But, as their commanding officer, your choices will determine their future. Form friendships with any or all of them, but balance socialisation against the pressures of maintaining your found family’s ability to survive the missions you lead them into.

Featuring:

  • Ten main characters and multiple sides, all with over thirty unique poses

  • Full HD CGs, backgrounds and sprites

  • Separate health, morale and relationship systems that impact characters' appearance and behaviour

  • Multiple story branches

  • Individual stat management for the whole patrol

  • Levels, exp, ability tests, perks and all that good stuff

  • Four branching romances

  • Tragic friendships!

Survive the Blackout

Survive the Blackout

I really enjoyed this game!

As soon as I start it, I’m hooked for a few hours. The story is mainly told through text, combined with well-made pixel graphics. A lot is left to your imagination, that’s what makes the horrors of the post-apocalyptic world so powerful.

He atmospheric soundtrack is fitting; it creates a feeling of hopelessness. You try to keep your little group of three alive. It’s a new challenge with each attempt at finishing the game and reaching the mysterious ‘Light’. The game has great replay value because with different characters in your group you get new dialogue options and choices. Plus the events are somewhat random, so you never know what will happen next and whether you’ll be lucky or not.

Real player with 14.9 hrs in game

Survive the Blackout is exactly the kind of game someone interested the post-apocalyptic variety of l’inquiétude morale genre would be happy to try.

Smart writing, and distinct, intriguing characters trying to find their way in a grim, chaotic setting will only make you ache for more. Carefully navigating all the choices they face feels engaging and organic, and makes you wonder - what would I do? Discovering their personal stories, especially when the heroes respond to your actions uniquely and sometimes - truly surprisingly - feels very rewarding when you’re able to guide them through an interaction safely and successfully. And let me tell you: the choices you face aren’t as obvious as they may initially seem.

Ashwalkers

Ashwalkers

Updated for Steam Nominations 2021

As mostly first person shooters player, i sometimes enjoy switching to less intense indie games. Ashwalkers would be one of those.

For me this game became liked a moment i saw it on store. Mostly because of character design and story setting, which is surprisingly similar to one i’ve wrote a couple of years ago. So far this is the closest thing to what could be called “dream game”.

As the gameplay is not challenging, it requires player to calculate their movements since “survival” part is taking an action. Game itself is user friendly, player just need to get used to visual narrative and simple controls.

Real player with 5.4 hrs in game

For those looking for a game akin to the choose your own adventure books of old, Ashwalkers is phenomenal. Decisions require careful thought be put into them, and the game rewards reading into the choices and texts. Some of the choices endgame that determine the endings felt a bit arbitrary, but after having at least gone down the three main endings (that each have at least 12 permutations) twice I can say I had a fun time for the price of the game.

That game while short does its best to make the time spent feel much longer than it is between the unique art style of both the world and its inhabitants, and the survival mechanics of the game which help add a needed sense of weight to the smaller choices. I had fun carefully deliberating on if I wanted to risk losing one resources for another I was in desperate need of. On repeat runs however this meter watching quickly begin to feel monotonous.
