Time’s Up in Tiny Town

Time’s Up in Tiny Town

Time’s Up in Tiny Town is a fast-paced simulation game, in which you will build a town for a pocket-sized world.

As mayor and founder of Tiny Town, construct buildings, collect food and house as many townsfolk as possible. You will score points on how large your population grows but also on how sustainable your town is at the end of your mandate.

In Tiny Town, the more you build, the more land you acquire. And the faster your population grows, the more time you are afforded.

But be sure to balance-out your production, your population’s needs and your world’s natural resources. Because if your environment collapses, so may your townsfolk know deprivation and famine!

So I was one of the people who tracked this game from pretty much the start. I backed it because I loved the idea of the setting and the Papers, Please-style gameplay. Now that I’ve finished the final product I can say I got both a little more and a little less then I anticipated.

So let’s start with what was good.

From what I saw this game looked like a 1984-style distopian future game. It seemed like you would play as an evil institution with no goal but to moniter what people think. As it turned out, the game made it much more complicated, in a good way, that is.

What is this game?

It is the foremost NSA-watch-the-world-from-an-office simulator you will find as of the time of writing this review, and possibly for a long time.

You play a young man, joining a government agency. The rabbithole goes deep, and you are thrusted into a position of Orwellian surveillance, intrigue and thrill.

Starting at the bottom, you analyze simple things. Metadata, browser history and try to piece together a puzzle that is very clearly Need To Know. Given only slight glimpses of what is truly going on in this world. As you progress, you will advance in rank, getting a higher and higher level of clearance, and quickly find yourself face to face with the choice of whether or not to use your access for the good of the agency, the government, the country. the people or even yourself.

Well, it was not perfect, but a very unusual and memorable gaming experience. The story of the Judge of the Tribunal, Alexis Fidel, who was at one of the most significant moments in the history of his country - the French Revolution - on the very crest of a revolutionary wave, which is rapidly beginning to turn red. Large-scale historical figures, ordinary citizens, judges, poets, dissolute women, grooms - they all pass through the ruthless court of the Tribunal, a guillotine blade hangs over each one, and only your signature and seal separates life from death.

A quick overview

We. The Revolution is a story-driven adventure game with strategy elements developed by Polyslash. The game takes place during the French Revolution, and it combines historical realities and characters with fiction. In the three acts, you go through the start of the revolution to its near end.

You play as a judge of the Revolutionary Tribunal, Alexis Fidèle. Your goal is simple – keep your head on your shoulders. To survive, you need to maintain good relations with Revolutionaries, commonfolk, Aristocracy, Juries, and your family members. However, this is not a detective game, as some would expect. You are not there to find the truth. You are there to achieve your own goals, and it is solely on you who you set free, send to prison, or straight to the guillotine.

Orwell: Ignorance is Strength

Orwell: Ignorance is Strength (genre: Story Telling - Investigation)

SCORE: 7.5/10

I have to say this game is more direct, genuine than the first game but lack the crush of having the ability to handling life and death situation on your hand. Also in the first game, the ending is somewhat more impactful than this one not to say this game’s ending is not. Secondly, I understand why this game sometimes get mixed reviews even though most of them is positive, it is mostly based on preference and I guess the person who tends to read more will eventually enjoy this game more than those who referred storytelling games like heavy rains and until dawn, etc. But even that doesn’t justify why this game isn’t good in my opinion.

Report for duty, Agent. Time to gossip our way to victory.

With season one of Orwell (or well, before we actually knew we would be getting another Orwell game) being an incredible experience, who wouldn’t want to revisit that universe again? Who wouldn’t want to be the person that spies rather than the one that gets spied on? We return with a whole new case to dig our hands into and more secrets to peek at.

Right as you start up, you will see changes that improves the immersion. Before you are even put into the system, you have to take a small survey to determine if you will be accepted. If you played the first Orwell game, this is also the time to choose whether you want to link your playthrough with it. This not only lets you skip the tutorial but whatever you did in that save carries over. If you haven’t noticed yet (like I didn’t) this canonically takes place during the events of season one. While you and well… past you will not interact, you will see those events referenced here. Once you get the survey out of the way, you will get a cutscene that does a great job in visualizing the “fake news” focus and, surprise, showing that this is voiced.

The Shrouded Isle

The Shrouded Isle

My my…this is certainly a game that casts cynicism upon religious belief, is it not? Apparently “ignorance” is a virtue, boys and girls!

So what the hell IS this game? Well, it’s a strategy game/management simulator, in which you basically have to keep a bunch of aristocratic houses onside, while finding one poor soul to sacrifice every season to the mighty deity Chernobog! (A sly reference to a certain Ukranian nuclear power plant disaster, perhaps?) To do this effectively, you must interrogate potential candidates and keep abreast of their various vices and virtues, in order to decide who is most worthy of such sacrifice, and who is more worth keeping around to undertake morale-boosting tasks. But be careful! Target a single house one time too many, and there might be nasty consequences…

I got this game at launch. The premise seemed strong, the art direction was compelling, so I took the jump.

Positives

  • Simple to learn - the mechanics are easy to get used to. The fundamentals are not bad, so you don’t need much time to get going. The important thing is how you apply them.

  • Very hard. Go into this expecting to lose but have fun. Treat it more like a choose your own adventure crossed with XCOM or Darkest Dungeon.

  • Art is amazing. The minimalistic use of colours looks top notch. The game allows you to switch between colour palettes, as well, so you can go with whatever feels best. I believe the limited usage of colours was a strong choice in making the game look a bit otherworldly.

Headliner caught my attention with a simple tagline “What if you control the national news?” Interesting premise and a question that made me wonder “What if I did control the national news?” Fact-based reporting? No slant? Spread the writings of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense… I could do so much. So what would Headliner allow me to do?

I recently got this game for free from a curator connect offer. This 2D simulation game with 2D side-scrolling adventure game elements by Unbound Creations features a custom male/female protagonist Dianne Kalushky who is married to a custom male/female spouse Andrew or Sasha and has a daughter Amber(names of any character can be changed). Dianne has just started work as a Headliner at a news broadcaster Galmedia in the fictitious nation of Galixia.

Amidst the backdrop of a deep polarised divide between the genetically modified population and the non-modified minority known as Purists and an ongoing war in the neighbouring nation of Lerisia with a subsequent influx of refugees to Galixia, Dianne must manage his/her company’s expectations as a corporate entity which needs to rely on broadcasting the type of news to attract interest and subscribers, the conflicting interests from the pro-modified and the Purists as well as on whether to allow or control the number of Lerisian refugees into Galixia, Andrew/Sasha’s declining health, job security and concerns over Amber’s idea on having fun at a festival in a week’s time as well as Amber’s plans to enrol at a secondary and study biology which is beyond the family’s finances.

The HeartBeat

The HeartBeat

Despite being a really short game, I like this one.

Your artificial heart gives you just enough time to answer your secretary’s questions before it gives out, and depending on your answers, you can get a handful of different endings that either save or doom your city. The main goal is to stop the Coro- sorry, Prion virus from spreading, but you can get some interesting different final results based on your choices. Aside from answering questions, the gameplay is mostly rhythm-based, pumping your heart in time to the beat of the music to stay alive just a few more minutes. After a while this intensifies and the meter starts draining faster, and if you hit 0%, it’s game over and back to the beginning.

Okay this game is really intriguing… theres apparently so many endings too? wow…. it also kinda draws you in with all the underlying lore. i rly wish there was some guide online because i have no idea how to get the rest of the endings/achievements now tho :(

In Urbek, you will be able to build a city of your own design! Manage its natural resources, improve the quality of life of the population, and build its neighbourhoods in your own way.

Neighbourhoods

Breathe life into your city by building different neighbourhoods. Do you want a bohemian neighbourhood? Build bars, parks and libraries, but keep a low population density nearby. Do you want a bourgeois neighbourhood? You need parks and luxury shops.

Manage

There is no money in Urbek. Instead, you will have to build everything with your own resources, such as food, coal, or skilled work. There are more than 30 different resources to manage! Manage your natural resources well, so that they do not run out before they can be replaced. How will you choose to produce the energy for your inhabitants and industries?

Educate

Education is fundamental! By producing enough qualified work and scientific work, you will be able to build more advanced buildings.

Observe

Move around at street level in order to get a more intimate sense of the city you are creating. See and feel the differences between neighborhoods the way your city’s residents do!

Organic growth

The growth of your city will be organic. Some constructions will appear according to the surrounding conditions. For example, buildings with more than two floors will appear in densely populated areas and with basic services.

You can place other buildings by yourself, but they need some conditions. For instance, the local market needs to be close to the farms. The university should have some high schools nearby, which, in turn, require nearby schools.

When it comes to designing your city, you have a variety of viable options. There are no buildings that are superior to others. Every decision will have its pros and cons. Bourgeois houses consume more food and need resources that cost more to produce, but will improve the quality of life of the residents there. On the other hand, improving the productivity of industries will produce more resources, but will diminish the quality of life for residents living in the area.
