Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption

Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption

I can’t recommend Hero-U and I hate that I can’t. Quest For Glory 1, the VGA remake is a staple of my childhood and it is unavoidable that I’d compare the 2 games. One of the key pieces of Quest For Glory, that my young mind loved, was that unlike a standard RPG where your character just grew - QFG made you think about how to practice and improve the various skills you would need and how to fit that into your journey so that you succeeded in later goals. In fact, it did this much better in my eyes than games such as Skyrim did years later.

Harry Potter meets The Sims and that is a really good thing!

You play a student named Shawn O’Connor in a class for Rogues at a magical university called Hero-U. Taking place on a magic parallel Earth, you have one semester to battle through exams, plotting classmates, private wagers and competition, unlocking secret passages throughout the castle, exploration in the catacombs, and battling and or negotiating with monsters from rats to wraiths. This game is $35 on Steam and worth the dive for anyone who loves immersive adventure gaming, from arguably two of the greatest video game creators in the genre, Lori and Corey Cole.

Between Me and The Night

Between Me and The Night

Between Me and the Night captured my attention. The ability to be someone else is something that I’ve long wanted to be. It’s not that I hate myself but I always wanted to be something more than what I turned out to be. I was a promising basketball player at one stage and had scouts looking at me but illness as well as the fact that I stopped growing when I was 5’7″ and was never an athletic freak good enough to make up for a lack of height stopped me from becoming a professional. I wanted to excel professionally in other athletic ventures but was never very good at anything other than basketball. Other dreams included becoming an air force pilot (my eyesight was never good enough) or an astronaut (I’m fairly intelligent but not when it comes to the required sciences) so being a talent scout, writer, marketer and business person were my limits. Not bad but certainly nothing spectacular. Therefore the premise here was perfect for me. I tend to believe most of us can relate to the young boy in the story who is confronted with the realities of a modern world – including hot topics such as school bullying – and needing to escape it.

Between me and the night is a creative artistic game that amplifies certain phases of life a man can go through. You follow the role of a nameless boy with red hair who is plagued by various illusions of his nightmares. The game is technically very short and sweet (unless you give your best for the achievements). Before you buy, consider there was a bug in the game in the “house level”. Unless you don’t go through a particular order in the house level, you are guarantee to get stuck and go no further. So it’s best to follow a walkthrough before finishing the first level unless you want to get frustrated. The bug could be bypassed so I did not consider it as a major flaw.

Normality

Normality

Incredibly interesting and fun adventure game. It uses a unique engine that uses point and click and fps gameplay qualities with a humorous story. Some of the puzzles may not be as obvious but it can be straightforward and is fun to figure out. I would recommend downloading the US voice patch as this is the UK version of the game, that way you can get Corey Feldman as the lead character. Although he overdoes the 90’s slacker voice sometimes, its better than the UK version where the lead sounds like a dweeb. Even with the thick cockney accents in the UK version, the game is a blast either way.

Normality is a very odd combination - an adventure game with a Doom-like engine. Sounds odd? Yeah it is. There are some minor issues with that presentation but I’ll mention it when I’ll go on…

Normality is a Orwell served with a heavy rock/punk sauce. The titular normality is complete subjection to the ruling government, that means… yeah. No TV other than the boring NORMTV(TM)which runs normal (read: boring) programs for normal (read: boring) people, no rock music, normal books only (anything that isn’t normal is of course either censored or disposed off). Hell you can’t live in a NORM world eh? Take control of Kent - a young rebellious (or just wanting to have fun) chap and overthrow the boring government! That’s pretty much the story of the game.

Simon the Sorcerer - Mucusade: 25th Anniversary Edition

Simon the Sorcerer - Mucusade: 25th Anniversary Edition

This review is about the port, not the game itself. I guess everybody who buys Simon knows what to expect.

They redesigned the graphics of the control panel and added a key to display hotspots, but simon has only a few per screen. That’s it. I see no more inprovements from the scummvm version and that one. There is not even an autosave option. You cannot leave screens by double clicking and you cannot change walking speed, the skip option is also horrible, u will miss a lot be using it, because mostly not only the displayed sentence is skipped. The game runs stable at 40fps on my RTX3090, only if the backround has to scroll it becomes real jerky. So you will buy an Intel 486 Simulator as well, just to show you how high ended this game realy was. xD

This was an enjoyable blast from the past. A couple of elements of the humour of this game haven’t aged well, and I do think two of the puzzles are so obscure as to be unfair, but apart from that, still good. I actually think the guy who plays Simon in this is better than Chris Barry in the first one.

Space Geekz - The Crunchy Flakes Conspiracy

Space Geekz - The Crunchy Flakes Conspiracy

A fun point & click adventure game overall, with an amusing retro style and some genuinely funny moments. However, this one is held back by a couple of minor issues. First, a solid handful of the puzzle solutions come off as either random, illogical, or somehow misleading. You can usually get past this via the traditional point & click method of trying everything on everything else, but on two separate ocasions I genuinely found myself ground to a halt and needed a hint. The game has no built-in hint system, so this quite literally takes you out of the game. Second, though the translation is entirely coherent, it’s very often clear that the script was never edited by someone whose first language is English. On the other hand, the game offers other language options, at least one of which is presumably fine on this point. (I have a hunch the game would be best played in German.)

Great old-shool Adventure Game, I played first at my friends house. Yeah the graphics are not fancy by modern standards, the sound is not 5.1 surround and you can really count the pixels on the screen. But you know what? The game makes a lot of fun to me. The puzzles are challenging, the black humor makes me smile and I get that nostalgic feeling while playing of the old Amiga days.

To mention: The puzzles are getting more and more difficult during the game, sometimes

a little crazy but never unfair. I also loved the entertaining characters

The Inner World - The Last Wind Monk

The Inner World - The Last Wind Monk

“The Inner World - The Last Windmonk” is the sequel to “The Inner World” and also a point & click adventure for beginners and advanced adventure gamers.

And even though not having played the first game shouldn’t get in the way of solving puzzles and liking the game, I recommend playing the predecessor first.

The sequel shows the fantasy world of Asposia, three years after the first game’s ending. After the so-called flute-nose dynasty and its survivors rose from being stone statues for years, they are now officially persecuted by a tyrann named Emil who wants to hunt down and execute all flute-noses, making them responsible for controlling the dangerous basylian monsters (basically flying mechanical dragons which were a creation of the last dictator who told his people they were living, dangerous creatures).

The Inner World - The Last Wind Monk is a fantastic point & click adventure game. I recommend this game to anyone who likes p&c adventure games, although I do need to point out the following three caveats:

1. This is a family-friendly game set in a charming fantasy world. If you’re looking for gritty or mature content, this is not the game for you.

2. This is not a very difficult game. If you’re looking for an excruciatingly difficult p&c adventure game the likes of 1990s Sierra games, this is definitely not the game for you.

The Secret of Hutton Grammar School

The Secret of Hutton Grammar School

Brought back memories of Space Quest, as our undaunted janitor cleans up the scum of Hutton Grammar School. That being said, it is an awfully short game, but there’s a lot worse things you can do with a dollar. It’s clever, some good humour, and the voice acting is solidly done. To say much more would be to give away the whole game, more or less.

I wanted to support the author while also seeing what else they had made. My only issue, which is admittedly small, is that the mouse moves somewhat slowly. In a longer game this might have been a problem but this is short enough that it doesn’t pose any real hindrance from enjoying yourself.

This is a lovely little inexpensive game that seems to have been originally made for a jam. The game can be completed in about thirty minutes, but I smiled the whole way through.

Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bone Town

Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bone Town

Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bone Town

Willy Morgan and the curse of Bone town is an interesting take on the Point and Click/Adventure game genre, based around a fantasy pirate-world theme, with generic point and click gameplay.

The story starts at Willy Morgan’s house; it’s been 10 years since Willy’s father, the famous archeologist, Henry Morgan, disappeared.

## I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream

### Captivating Point and Click Adventure

I enjoyed playing through this game twice, I'd say that if you're interested, you should pick it up.

It's a story-based game inspired by the book of the same name by Harlan Ellison (who voices the character of AM in game).

☑ Decent

☐ Bad

☐ Don‘t look too long at it

☐ Paint.exe

Good, but this game was developed in the '90s, so you can imagine that the graphics will reflect that era. The graphics are not bad at all. I'd say that they still hold up somewhat and the graphics don't take away from the game.

Make no mistake about _I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream_….it is NOT a horror game, at least not in the typical sense. It's not trying to make you jump in your seat and scream in shocked terror. It has no interest in what many would call "cheap thrills". Instead, what this game wants to do is provoke your thought-process. It is a very cerebral game, with dark undertones that force you to think about the dark side of humanity, and whether or not there is redemption for our fatal flaws. It isn't afraid to present you with disturbing topics such as suicide, rape, even genocide, and make you deal with them. Although there is a tint of light-heartedness, 99% percent of the game is drenched in an atmosphere of hopelessness as you scramble to make amends for the characters' pasts in an attempt to thwart the diabolical supercomputer, AM.

![King's Quest™ Collection](https://cdn.cloudflare.steamstatic.com/steam/apps/10100/header.jpg "")

## King's Quest™ Collection

A Collection of 7 King's Quest titles released from 1983-1994\. It's a great Inventory Adventure series that Sierra On-Line created back when MS-DOS & Windows 3.1/95/98 was still by popular demand. I grew up with King's Quest 6-7 when I was a child.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-U9acpDcHo

In King's Quest 1 - Quest for the Crown:

Enter the Kingdom of Daventry which was once a peaceful, rich and free of hardships land ruled by King Edward with 3 Magical Treasures; A Magic Shield which protects its bearer, A Magic Mirror which foretells the Future & finally, A Magic Treasure Chest which is filled with Gold. However, over the years, these 3 Treasures were lost thanks to those in power whos lies and deceit took advantage of King Edward's Hardships. Now, King Edward is old and frail with no heir to the throne. So calls forth Sir Graham, one of his bravest, greatest and youngest Knights, to search the land and reclaim the 3 Magical Treasures. If successful, Sir Graham will become the new King of Daventry.

Games of my childhood always have a sweet spot with me, and this whole collection has been one of my favorites. My father introduced me to King's Quest when I was young and he bought the first 4\. I remember the rather unique official cheat books which required a special marker to make the invisivle ink to appear.

But to talk of this collection, the first four were originally text driven games. meaning that you have to type in commands like "Look at woman," or "rub lamp." The first three were then later re-worked with updated graphics (but still rather dated compared to today's games). Starting with 5, gameplay shifted a little, instead of being text driven, they became what is now called "point and click."
