The Last Door - Collector’s Edition

The Last Door - Collector’s Edition

Who would have thought that the next great horror game would be a pixelated homage to Lovecraft and Poe? I had been following The Last Door’s development since its Kickstarter roots, and as soon as it popped up on Steam the game was in my cart and my wallet $10 lighter.

The game starts off ominous enough; a suicide, a letter, and a friend vowing to uncover the truth of it all. Set in the 1880’s, our protagonist Devitt embarks on a journey through forgotten memories that threaten to lead him to the depths of insanity itself. That’s not exactly what I was expecting from this game, but I am certainly not complaining.

‘The Last Door’ is a classic point and click adventure game. So much so that you can play the entire thing with only the use of the mouse. The graphics are beautifully designed pixel graphics that never feel like you are losing atmosphere. The story is intriguing and interesting with a feeling of The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe and has been called “A Love letter to H.P. Lovecraft” by Penny Arcade.

The music composed by Carlos Viola is phenomenal. In fact I would say that it is now in my top 3 most loved video game soundtracks after playing this game and worth the purchase price by itself. You can download the soundtrack from the website (https://thelastdoor.com/index.php/soundtrack) , although they have plans to include it in an update at some point in the Collector’s Edition on Steam. Here’s a bit of a taste from the Chapter 1 OST, which should give you some feeling as to the atmosphere of the game:

Beyond The Edge Of Owlsgard

Beyond The Edge Of Owlsgard

Beyond The Edge Of Owlsgard is an old-school point & click adventure game that is reminiscent of the animated movies and Saturday morning cartoons of decades gone by. While it is obviously inspired by the LucasArts and Sierra classics, it also strives to create its own style and identity by returning to the original “adventure” aspect of the genre. Aside from solving the obligatory inventory-based puzzles, this means a heavy focus on exploring mysterious lands, uncovering secrets and dealing with all kinds of dangers.

Strange things are happening in the animal kingdom of Velehill. Unknown shadows of large appearance are seen roaming through the forests and making the ground shake with every step of their steel feet. Houses and trees are destroyed and one animal after the other seems to disappear mysteriously.

Finn, a young roebuck, soon finds out about the disappearance of his family as well. Without hesitation, he goes on a journey to find them, not knowing he and his new friend Gwen the owl will soon uncover a dark secret that should have been kept hidden for all eternity…

  • An immersive story told through hand-drawn landscapes and countless animations!

  • A return to the “adventure” aspect of the genre – a big focus on exploring whimsical places, uncovering secrets, and dealing with tense and dangerous situations

  • Cinematic cutscenes, reminiscent of hand-drawn animated movies, mixed with a pixel art aesthetic

  • Atmospheric soundtrack, inspired by the old midi classics everyone knows and loves

  • 6-8 hours of gameplay

Detective Di: The Silk Rose Murders

Detective Di: The Silk Rose Murders

The case for

Detective Di: The Silk Rose Murders is a murder mystery game, so the first, most important question should be: is the mystery engaging? And it is, which is why it earns my thumbs up. The plot is intriguing and the pace is generally good all throughout the game. It tells several short stories, with an overarching plot connecting all of them and ending on a satisfying conclusion.

The case against

When compared with other murder mystery games, like the Gabriel Knight, Sherlock Holmes or Laura Bow series, in Detective Di there’s surprisingly little detectiving to do. There’s a clue board that fills up as you uncover relevant information, but you don’t have to actually figure out what clues are relevant or how they connect, as the game does all of this automatically, and once you reach the end of the chapter and the board is full Magistrate Di will make all the connections himself and explain his conclusions to you. All the actual detective work in the game is done automatically.

Kathy Rain: Director’s Cut

Kathy Rain: Director’s Cut

Welcome to crazy town

Kathy Rain Director’s Cut is a re-release of the original game with slight enhancements and bonuses.

The game is great and owners of the original got a good discount but still it would’ve been nice to make this a free upgrade. There’s not enough enhancements or new content to justify the price.

Story and gameplay are things which makes this game awesome.

Kathy is a troubled young woman living with her christian roommate. Kathy’s mother is locked up in a mental institution, she smokes and has a bike. A very lovable character with amazing sense of humor and the whole story about her is just amazing. The game starts with a funeral and since then Kathy embarks on a journey to dig some stuff about her family’s past.

Kathy Rain is a point n click adventure set in the 90s but with modernized controls over the early classics that we love.

The story, characters and dialogues are very good. The puzzles aren’t too hard but are pretty fun and creative. So if you love point N click but feel rusty over the puzzle solving this game is excellent to come back. The truth is that this game is a must play for every point N click lover or jst anyone who wants to dive into the genre.

This director’s cut edition is the definitive way to play it. Fix everything and adds new content. Also if you have played the original around four years ago like me, you’ll enjoy replaying this edition.

Kathy Rain

Kathy Rain

Kathy Rain is the type of game that didn’t have to do much to make me want to play it. It’s a point and click game where you play as sassy Kathy Rain trying to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding your grandfather’s death. It’s a point and click detective game with a female lead plus retro pixel graphics; on the surface, it seemed like a no-brainer to me. However, upon delving into the game itself I found myself a bit conflicted. Everything about the game is top notch, from visuals to voice acting. The gameplay is smooth as are the controls, it’s the story that lumbers. Depending on a player’s taste, it will be either hit or miss.

The year is 1995, and Katherine Rain is a collage student, who’s working on her second year, hopefully to become a full licensed journalist one day. She’s not your typical student, though, she had to grow fast and learn about her surroundings quickly, which clearly left a contempt for the human race. Kathy is a tough girl, nor has tough as her biker looks, but still pretty tenacious. She enjoys horror movies, long rides on her bike, annoying her roommates with her guitar, her pack of smokes and sleeping till late. Her adventure starts with this last part being obstructed. Eileen, her roommatewakes her with breaking news; someone named Joseph Rain died, and his funeral will take place in Conwell Springs, Kathy’s hometown! Could they be related?

Nine Witches: Family Disruption - Prologue

I think the prologue was good and funny in parts. I would recommend the game. I do not have a controller to connect to the computer and using the keyboard is a little cumbersome to use it needs a little work to better layout the controls. being able to use a mouse in game would help a lot.

Played the prologue and loved it !

The story got me from the beginning with a WWII and witchcraft mix. I also want to point out the music which totally fits with the game’s atmosphere.

The pixel art is great and the humor is quirky, totally my style.

I also love the game mechanics allowing you to switch between the characters and having each one of them with specific abilities.

Overall this game will please puzzle / narrative / point n click players who like dark sense of humor, and a slight dose of retro style in their games.

Review by Gaming Masterpieces - The greatest games of all time on Steam.

A classic point and click adventure. The pixel-art reminds me of the old Lucasfilm SCUMM adventures from the 80s, the light-hearted humor as well. The story of a wheelchair-bound english paranormal scientist and his Japanese servant operating in a rural village in Nazi occupied Norway, where the Nazis conjure evil forces to turn the tide of war, is obviously a parody. The humor, full of awkward toilet jokes and a few good ones (the one with the pale nun made me snort with laughter while drinking a coke), fits to the game, but the game is also full of quite serious topics in regard to the occupation, that clash with the general comic mischief style. Just be prepared that you will witness some very unfunny things in this mostly funny game as well. The puzzles start very easy, I have now played until act 4 and finally reached a point where I don’t know how to proceed. German words are used for some German things, which may sound good for non-german speakers, but they are often awfully translated and sound strange to German native speakers. Technically, the game is well made, it comes with a really good controller implementation and the gameplay is never hindered by the user interface. There is no speech, my XBOX 360 and One controllers were recognized without any problems. Is it a masterpiece? No, but it is a good indie pnc adventure nevertheless.

Edit: Last weekend I finished the game and the game stays good from the beginning until the end. The difficulty is ok. Not to easy and not to hard.

The humor stays great all the time. There was no moment I got bored. There are also a few action moments where you have to shoot.

If I need to give a score to this game it would be a 10/10 because it simply was perfect for me.

My first review:

Nine Witches: Family Disruption has some good humor.

Until now I reached Chapter 3. I had to play with 2 personages. One of them has a special ability to leave his body as a ghost. As a ghost you can find and talk to other ghosts, go into buildings where you can see hilarious moments.

Hey guys,

overall I can only recommend playing this lovely point and click adventure game. Let’s have a look on the top features and on the features with some space for improvement.

TOP:

  • graphic style of scenery

  • lot of retro feeling comes along when playing Sol 705

  • funny and somehow exaggerated chars

  • puzzles not too hard and solveable by think, not much trial & error needed

  • official hint system

  • several hints included in gameplay (very funny)

  • ingenious story

  • overall humor in the game (dialogues, story)

So I got to the final… and I’d say I’m quite dissappointed.

This game claims that it could be more than it is.

Graphics are okay but I didn’t like not so smooth animation and slow lazy walking of character.

It is 2020, you know.

I like art insertions of characters. As for me, it would be more nice to see ingame graphics closer to those arts.

Or even 3d. As what we can see in community.

The puzzles are quite fun.

Dialogs are okay and fun sometimes.

(Bug report on 2020.12.29: In some moments thre looks like there are lost audio and quite long pause before dialog starts.

Tales of the Neon Sea

Tales of the Neon Sea

Tales of The Neon Sea-Exciting domestic Chinese style cyberpunk game.

Leave a comment on my favorite game is my tribute to this game.

In the thought of many people, cyberpunk-style games should have several characteristics: a huge world view, a huge map, and a thought-provoking ending. And this game changed my opinion.

The ethereal worldview casts an invisible shadow on the cyberpunk style. Although there are many background books and texts in the game, they focus on introducing the background of the main task of the game itself, and avoid discussing the background of cyberpunk. In my opinion, this is really the finishing touch of this game. The game brings players who are on the main storyline into a real cyberpunk and Chinese-style atmosphere through a good drawing style, which not only allows players to see the punk style of the future city in the rich plot, but also allows the tragedy mainline process Of players get a touch of comfort and a sense of belonging.

In A Nutshell

🔵 Pros

  • Excellent, modern pixel-art graphical style, with great amount of detail and care in the realization of environments.

  • Overall good variety of puzzle types throughout the game, keeping it interesting and not redundant.

  • Original, interesting setting, ensuring information about world lore and characters do not sound as something “already seen”.

  • Many additional lore elements, secret collectibles to gather for the more attentive players.

  • Tons of smart references to pop, anime, movie and video-game culture elements and characters.

Wait! Life is Beautiful! Prologue

Wait! Life is Beautiful! Prologue

So I played the demo.

I thought I saved one person and the rest died.

The results at the end said I saved 0 people and killed/let die 0 people, which is obviously false (it didn’t record my data obviously).

I must say through most of the play-through I thought it was a joke on the player that you /couldn’t/ actually save anyone. Until I did somehow manage to save one person.

I felt there wasn’t really any logical method to deduct what would save a person or make them decide to jump. Maybe the demo wasn’t long enough to show data patterns that would alert the player to what choices would lead to ‘success’ or ‘failure’. Or Maybe I’m just really bad at talking to suicidal people in real life. Who knows.

Real player with 2.1 hrs in game

Played it a couple of times, experienced a bug with the “End Conversation” pop-up that wouldn’t go away one of those times, other than that the controls are bare-bones lean here: just point and click to select dialogue choices.

So why not recommend?

1. Because it’s not fun; maybe that’s to be suspected given the subject matter, I suppose, but even in the sense that the progression and gameplay should feel rewarding it falls short. One moment in particular comes in the form of an unskippable, cringy ricitation of a famous soliloquy that our protagonist, seemingly, is unfamiliar with - it goes on too long, you can’t make it go any faster, and it seemingly bears no effect on the demo at least.
