A good point-and-click game set during a dark chapter of Korean history.

We follow a boy from 1948, trying to live his life as best as he can while a bloody civil war is being waged on his island. I didn’t know anything about this incident before playing this game but it seems that a lot of care was put into depicting it.

Even for people with no interest in history, there is still a good story to be found, about surviving with your family through trying times. It’s not all doom and gloom though, there are also many lighthearted moments. It’s all pretty well written although the English translation feels quite weird at times.

Storyline: On the darkest of nights when creatures and spirits rarely seen by man abound, a lost(?) traveler/wanderer is invited to join a campfire and listen to a tale. The tale told by the invisible narrator is about a small insignificant nameless creature born out of darkness on the darkest of nights much like that night. This epic journey of self-awareness and discovery turns into a magic strewn and danger filled quest which takes place in a single night full of magic and spirits taken from Swedish forklore.

You follow a little creature on his journey for fulfillment, wandering through nightly environments that are inspired by tales of folklore. Gameplay is quite standard to the point-and-click genre where you collect objects to interact with your surroundings and overcome puzzles. A nice addition though, is that you’re equipped with four elemental runes (earth, water, air, fire) which activate and produce different outcomes depending on the scene. You can also interact with entities in a few different ways, such as touching, observing or talking to the person/object. Although not all interactions are entirely necessary, it can lead to some humerous/extra dialogue and is a nice feature nonetheless.

Barney’s Dream Cruise

Barney’s Dream Cruise

A fun cute little game. I love the humor and the characters. Puzzles are fairly logical. The game is short; you can finish it in about one hour or two, depending on how often you get stuck. There are no actual choices to make nor multiple endings. It could really use some music, though. (It does have music, sometimes, like in map) ** UPDATE: They’ve added the music. I appreciate the effort. Yeah, it’s just music, but the game feels A LOT better now.

If you’re not sure about buying this game, you can play it for free on mobile devices.

Currently playing this on my gaming channel. I like the zany (and sometimes adult) humor, but I feel like the sudden disappearance and reappearance of music is a little distracting.

Also, I feel like some of the puzzles are a little too nonsensical. I spent a lot of time trying everything on everyone, only to be shocked to find out it actually worked. For example:

! The old bird at the bank kept talking about collecting stamps, so I thought that was a hint to find a cool stamp or something to give to her to make her leave. However, it turns out it’s some random flyer for a shoe sale. ???

Beyond The Edge Of Owlsgard

Beyond The Edge Of Owlsgard

Beyond The Edge Of Owlsgard is an old-school point & click adventure game that is reminiscent of the animated movies and Saturday morning cartoons of decades gone by. While it is obviously inspired by the LucasArts and Sierra classics, it also strives to create its own style and identity by returning to the original “adventure” aspect of the genre. Aside from solving the obligatory inventory-based puzzles, this means a heavy focus on exploring mysterious lands, uncovering secrets and dealing with all kinds of dangers.

Strange things are happening in the animal kingdom of Velehill. Unknown shadows of large appearance are seen roaming through the forests and making the ground shake with every step of their steel feet. Houses and trees are destroyed and one animal after the other seems to disappear mysteriously.

Finn, a young roebuck, soon finds out about the disappearance of his family as well. Without hesitation, he goes on a journey to find them, not knowing he and his new friend Gwen the owl will soon uncover a dark secret that should have been kept hidden for all eternity…

  • An immersive story told through hand-drawn landscapes and countless animations!

  • A return to the “adventure” aspect of the genre – a big focus on exploring whimsical places, uncovering secrets, and dealing with tense and dangerous situations

  • Cinematic cutscenes, reminiscent of hand-drawn animated movies, mixed with a pixel art aesthetic

  • Atmospheric soundtrack, inspired by the old midi classics everyone knows and loves

  • 6-8 hours of gameplay

Virtuaverse

A beautiful retro aesthetic is all this game has to offer for modern adventurers. If you’re happy with a bland story and no character development but enjoy that bygone feel then this might interest you.

First Impressions🤔

Virtuaverse visually impresses and it is apparent that a lot of work has gone into making this game look and feel as retro as possible. Characters, environments and objects are rendered superbly and it always amazes me how beautiful a pixel world can look if it is done right.

Real player with 20.4 hrs in game

VirtuaVerse is clearly a love letter to point & click adventure games of the 90’s, not only in its engine, animations, and interface, but also in some of its puzzle design. The pixel art is a masterpiece, the soundtrack is memorable, and the adventure is captivating. However, the price of fidelity brings with it some of the elements that made old games frustrating, such as lazy direction, useless inventory items, pixel hunts, and baffling riddles that are sure to prevent completion in one session. Thus, it’s difficult to accurately appraise VirtuaVerse as a yes/no recommendation, because it largely depends on your threshold for games that don’t lead you by the hand.

Captain Disaster in: Death Has A Million Stomping Boots

Captain Disaster in: Death Has A Million Stomping Boots

I had fun playing the free prequel “Dark side of the moon”, and I thought of giving this one a try. It’s a very different game. Much more polished in many ways.

The visuals are very consistent, increasing in quality as you reach the climax, which is very rewarding. The story has a lot more work, with more developed characters and references to the prequel. The music fits perfectly and sets the mood. finally, it’s really rare to solve a puzzle by chance, or have to do pixel hunting. Almost every puzzle can be solved by applying logic. The dialogs go on the same line as the prequel, with tons of pop culture references, and a bit of breaking the third wall, plus tons of comedy everywhere, as you can probably guess from the title and the trailer. You can tell there is quite a bit of work leaving enough hints for the player to solve the puzzles when stuck.

This is a delightful game that uses a traditional point and click interface. It has all the elements of a successful adventure… witty dialog, funny cut-scenes, well acted voice-overs, a silly story, quests with obscure solutions, and a hero you can’t help but like. In a word, it is just plain fun to play!

You control Captain Disaster as he navigates the cosmos, picking up and delivering a package. What should be a simple errand sets off a chain events that will keep you smiling through the entire game. Cultural references are constant and puzzles range from easy (if you are paying attention to the clues) to obtuse. In the end, I never minded ‘try this, try that’ problem solving because the accompanying narrative kept me entertained.

Joyfess Ep1: Martin’s Secret Recipe

Joyfess Ep1: Martin’s Secret Recipe

Joyfess Ep 1: Martin’s Secret Recipe is an adventure point and click game.

Story

Joyfess Tidesman, a fearless sailor from the Caribbean, decides to take a break from his sea adventures by participating in a cooking contest, only to realize that the most exciting of his adventures is yet to come as he tries to fetch a recipe and gather its contents. In his way are a variety of puzzles and challenges which he must overcome.

Gameplay

The game features many some interesting puzzles. The player is tasked with find items, combining them and using them in various ways. Some of the puzzle solutions seem somewhat arbitrary but are fun nonetheless.

I enjoyed the first chapter and am looking forward to the next episode. The puzzles are logical and I was able to figure them all out without the help of walkthroughs etc. I found the nods to the other adventure games charming but not overbearing. I love the art style and am looking forward to more. All point and click adventure fans should be happy with this one.

Captain Disaster in: The Dark Side of the Moon

Captain Disaster in: The Dark Side of the Moon

I loved this little game. Graphics are a bit of an eyesore but they fit the mood well, because it’s a meta, fourth wall breaking parody type of game. It’s good fun and made me laugh. Puzzles make some sense and the dev was even kind enough to help me when I got stuck - I thought I had tried something I didn’t. This game is better enjoyed by people familiar with Sierra and Lucasarts games and that can get all the pop references. It exploits the point and click tropes and the bad habits of adventure players brilliantly.

Real player with 5.8 hrs in game

This game is a short little diversion that will be enjoyable to fans of the Point and Click genre. A fully voiced space comedy, you are trapped on a moon with the goal of getting off. In true adventure game fashion, a larger plot emerges.

The real joy of the game is the comedy writing. It is quite reference heavy, but enjoyable nonetheless. A full third of the references are to adventure games, classic adventure games, and AGS, the software used to build the game. Another full third of the references are sci-fi references. The final third of references are to Pink Floyd albums. If you don’t like these things, this game may not be for you.

Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bone Town

Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bone Town

Willy Morgan and the Curse of Bone Town

Willy Morgan and the curse of Bone town is an interesting take on the Point and Click/Adventure game genre, based around a fantasy pirate-world theme, with generic point and click gameplay.

The story starts at Willy Morgan’s house; it’s been 10 years since Willy’s father, the famous archeologist, Henry Morgan, disappeared.

## Insights - Maniac Vortex

Very nice game with some difficult puzzle solutions, interesting story and has a couple of timed puzzles (which I normally dislike), but those were manageable.

Great game with a bewildering story. Strong 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest' vibes. Although rather short (about 3 h of gameplay) Insights is not quite easy, some puzzles are quite tough to find out. The only thing that bothered me was the inventory, I prefer the classic hover inventory on top or bottom of the screen. Else: very well done, exactly such dark, obscure adventure games I am looking for!
