BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION

BEAUTIFUL DESOLATION

For those of you who might be considering buying this as a Fallout-like game set in a post-apoc South Africa..don’t. While it may appear otherwise at first its entirely a point and click adventure game that while fun has little in common with Fallout. Combat is limited to a handful of incidents, always involves some sort of proxy, and outside of a single instance is purely optional. Something that can be missed if your not careful along with the bits it unlocks.

Now for the unpleasant bit.

! I really wanted to like this game, I really did. I found the setting charming, its NPCs well rounded, and the story had me hooked…right up until the literal last minutes of the game. When you finally talk with Darius after realizing (something I suspected since the start) that you were playing out a pre-written prophecy jotted down by an entity who does not see time as a straight line.

Wakanda place is this?

Move aside Afrofuturism, District 9, Black Panther, Elysium, Chappie and all you other African takes on sci-fi, because one thing’s for sure… I can easily tell you that I’ve never seen anything quite like the world of Beautiful Desolation.

If you are South African like me, then you must already know that you’re gonna experience it in a slightly different way to the rest of the world and may get a kick out of various elements that feel familiar to home. Beautiful Desolation is without a doubt, a whole new bag of Simba chips. It launches you into a future so far ahead that the South Africa you might know (and the people who lived there) are completely unrecognisable. The more this story of crazy futures and prophecies unfolds, the more interesting it becomes.

Awesome game and some really tough puzzles. I enjoyed the endless runner and got some cool skins from it. I’m an achievement hunter so it was fun to replay the story to unlock them! The endless runners one were more difficult to get but I got there!

While none of the puzzles were all too difficult the big problem with the game is that the controls are terrible. You can’t hold and drag where you want to go, you have to click and wait, except when you are holding something there are on screen buttons you need to click with your mouse. Plus half of the time when you click to pick something up it glitches and either doesn’t grab it or you do grab it but it clips into another object. I know it’s free but there are some really great free games out there and I hold this type of game to the same standards.

Cpt.Balloney - painful days at home

Cpt.Balloney - painful days at home

This game has a lot to love!

Firstly, allow me to say, i hold the keyless world record speedrun for Cpt.Balloney - painful days at home.

I have beaten the game numerous times, and to summarize, it is very charming in a very certain kind of way. As advertised, the game does have; graphics, animations, sounds, music and story

I had the soundtrack of the game stuck in my head for days after playing, very catchy.

The game play is scarcely explained, however that adds to the charm the game offers through its simple communication through visuals. The tightly knit plot and short duration lend nicely to the relaxing vibe of the game. The puzzles can be confusing at times, but the solutions always left me with a massive grin.

If you need a quick, stupid laugh or want to bash your head in from the graphics of poorly done MS paint and pixel art combined than this is the game for you. If you have a couple of bucks to spare and about 30-45 mins to waste then this will surely help. Go into this game expecting lower than the minimum of what you would have expected from this game.

Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption

Hero-U: Rogue to Redemption

I can’t recommend Hero-U and I hate that I can’t. Quest For Glory 1, the VGA remake is a staple of my childhood and it is unavoidable that I’d compare the 2 games. One of the key pieces of Quest For Glory, that my young mind loved, was that unlike a standard RPG where your character just grew - QFG made you think about how to practice and improve the various skills you would need and how to fit that into your journey so that you succeeded in later goals. In fact, it did this much better in my eyes than games such as Skyrim did years later.

Harry Potter meets The Sims and that is a really good thing!

You play a student named Shawn O’Connor in a class for Rogues at a magical university called Hero-U. Taking place on a magic parallel Earth, you have one semester to battle through exams, plotting classmates, private wagers and competition, unlocking secret passages throughout the castle, exploration in the catacombs, and battling and or negotiating with monsters from rats to wraiths. This game is $35 on Steam and worth the dive for anyone who loves immersive adventure gaming, from arguably two of the greatest video game creators in the genre, Lori and Corey Cole.

Oniria Crimes

Oniria Crimes

Oniria Crimes is a strange and interesting game from Ckolmos, a small studio from Madrid, Spain. If you aren’t too fussed about expecting a meaty main story, there is plenty of vibrant voxel art and deep lore to make this game worth playing.

This game is set in Oniria, city of dreams, a sort of shared-consciousness virtual reality world inhabited by people in their sleep. There is plenty of talk about “awake-world” in the game, but we never see it; the full game is spent exploring this dreamy urban environment. The lore of Oniria runs very deep, and a big part of the game is figuring out just what this world is, how it works, and what makes it tick.

A really good game with a very interesting background that makes you use your brain.

Totally recommended and if possible I recommend to play it with a partner, it’s a lot of fun to be both trying to solve the case and getting our own theories out !

STASIS

STASIS

The best thing I can say about Stasis is that is reminded me of Sanitarium from about 1999. I mean that as high praise. Overall, I think the game is very much worth playing for adventure fans, in spite of some flaws. It was simply so much better in some ways than it had to be, that it made up for the little annoyances.

For example, the animations and videos were very well done, giving the game a top-tier feel in spite of the somewhat dated appearance of the isometric locations. The atmosphere was creepy and suspenseful enough to make up for the somewhat overdone derelict ship horror sci-fi premise. I generally don’t love it when games tell you the story almost entirely by journal entries that you find lying around, but in this case, they are so well written with so few typos or grammatical errors that I actually found them a pleasure to read. They tell a story of developing interpersonal drama between the crew members as things went to hell, but more importantly, they are critical to understanding what is going on, so it’s good that they are so readable. Those logs aren’t voiced, but there are characters talking to you over transmissions who are fully voiced, and that’s done fairly well. I found the atmospheric ambient noises, music, and background transmissions to be much more effective than the voice acting, though.

I played through STASIS in basically one sitting. It took around seven hours to complete.

What STASIS basically does is pay homage to various movies like Event Horizon, Pandorum, and Aliens(you will find Easter Eggs in the game demonstrating proof of these influences) while crafting its own fairly well written story. The dark and foreboding atmosphere in STASIS really sets the tone for what was, at least in my opinion, a stellar gaming experience.

Story

The story in STASIS is centered around John Maracheck, who awakens from stasis to find himself alone. His wife and daughter are missing and the place he awakens in seems abandoned. The story in STASIS develops as John searches for his family while also trying to figure out how he even ended up alone and what happened to everybody else on Groom Lake, the space base he now finds himself on.

Hero of the Kingdom II

Hero of the Kingdom II

Hero of the Kingdom II brings back the same hidden object x visual novel x management blend that defined its first installment, expanding both the number of locations and adding depth by way of caves and dungeons. The game is longer and has a lot more mandatory bartering to raise gold, but ultimately doesn’t step outside of its comfort zone. Much of the following is taken word for word from my review of the first, because it’s still true:

You can read my original Hero of the Kingdom review here.

I vaguely remember playing through Hero of the Kingdom about a year ago. It was a blast of casual RPG adventure and I played it through in a couple of evenings. The second instalment is best described to the players of the original game by “more of the same”: Light-hearted adventuring in a fantasy-lite setting, being a goody-goody adventurer who has great deeds in his near future. I’d roll in a casual take on the hidden object genre as well.

Storyline is also fairly similar to the original: the protagonist has basically lost everything but he’s an honest, hard-working dude so he’s not complaining and instead just starts getting stuff done. Then everything goes down the drain again and he has to go save not only his sister but basically the whole civilized world. Being the embodiment of righteousness he’s going to help every beggar, farmer and sovereign along the way, even the shady kinds because of “the greater good”.

Puzzle Car

Puzzle Car

A very relaxing, casual puzzle…simple to play yet has its challenging moments at each level. I would suggest this as a family-friendly game for those with children as well as us “adult children” who enjoy solving logical challenges without getting hung up on long-reaching strategy. I hope the developer takes an interest in thinking up new twists to make additional levels even more difficult. Thanks for developing this game, truly enjoyable for me!

Ah man, I love Puzzle Car. It’s got that wonderful thing where your brain starts to hum and the patterns you’re looking for become second nature; every now I’d solve a level on auto-pilot, and not because it was too easy, because I was in the Puzzle Car zone. In a nutshell, a road system made up of turns, crossroads, traffic lights & tunnels (that link up like portals) are scrambled. You’ve got to put them in the right order to let your little car reach the end.

I find the difficulty level here very good for a dip-in-and-out experience, it’s perfect to play for 15, 20 minutes in between meetings. It was never too easy, and it hasn’t become frustrating. All the levels I’ve solved so far (up to level 30) have been solvable with trial and error, and its really satisfying when you can see that you’re drawing closer to the solution.
