McPixel

McPixel

Imagine a puzzle game where logic is thrown out fo the window, and absurdity is rewarded - that’s McPixel.

McPixel, the ‘hero’, is faced with various different scenarios where he is tasked with saving the day, often from a bomb. There’s only one way to save the day in each scenario, but it’ll often take trial and error to discover it. It often won’t make sense, but it will more often than not be absurd and strangely funny.

The McPixel website describes it best “You have 20 seconds to solve each riddle, regardless whether you lose or fail, you will be transported to next puzzle that you haven’t solved yet.”

PROS: A parody of MacGyver where you are put into a time-crunched scenario that you need to quickly solve. The game is structured very creatively to keep you on your toes the whole way through. Lots of levels and easter eggs. Legitimately funny, laugh-out-loud humor that ranges from subtle to asinine.

Lancelot’s Hangover: The Quest for the Holy Booze

Lancelot’s Hangover: The Quest for the Holy Booze

This game is a barrel bursting with absolute nonsense. And this is why it’s terrific.

The art style is simplistic but serves the humour very well, the puzzles aren’t hard, until the last chapter where it’s more of a “How much do you remember of the game you’ve played and the locations you’ve visited” luckily the game cuts off branches you don’t need to revisit so it doesn’t become annoying.

It’s a laugh and a half and definitely worth a look.

Do you have a sense for black humor? Then you have to play Lancelot’s Hangover. That seems familiar to me… anyway I would say even if you don’t have a sense for black humor you have to play it because it’s a great sexy adventure game. Everything is alright. I can’t complain. It reminded me a bit of my childhood when I was in the monastery and in the church. At that time there were unfortunately no naked women in the monastery. It also reminds me of Marilyn Manson when he says: I don’t like the drugs but the drugs like me. Lancelot should sing that, the sexy knight with beer (I recommend the Bavarian beer).

Dragon Audit

Dragon Audit

If you like light-hearted fantasy, you will likely enjoy this highly humorous tale (or tail?). An auditor is sent to a castle that’s rumored to be inhabited by a dragon … because that castle’s taxes were falling behind.

A few ~ mostly ~ easy puzzles are included in this roleplaying game. No combat.

Much fun to be had!

I bought it during early release, directly from the developer. Helped hunt bugs. He was kind enough to include “Tumblyweeds” in the credits.

So my “hours played” displays vastly fewer hours than I have actually spent playing this game.

I think it would be very easy to harshly judge this game based solely on the trailer and content on the store page. Despite that, it is a thoroughly enjoyable adventure gaming experience. Indeed the trailer doesn’t do the graphics and art style justice which actually looks much better in game (although admittedly still very obviously Unity powered). The puzzles are on the simpler end of the spectrum, although I personally prefer that over absurd moon logic puzzles typical of older adventure games. It is relatively short, and can easily be completed in one ~90 minute sitting. For the price asked I think that is very reasonable.

PROS: Voice-acting is superb, environments are exceptional. iMUSE works beautifully in this, making the soundtrack feel alive. The game is completely unaltered, and concept art from the original development decades ago was used to fill in the blanks instead of simply extrapolating from what could be seen. The puzzles are just enough of a challenge, and the game is a fair length for a point n’ click adventure. Guybrush and all other sprites look fantastic.

“Monkey Island 2 - LeChuck’s Revenge” comes right from the golden era of point and click adventures games when Lucas Arts was releasing one masterpiece after another. It is easily one of the most hilarious games ever existed while it packs some nice hand drawn visuals, iconic characters, unforgettable music and many clever puzzles. Unfortunately it is also one of the most difficult adventures ever made, so that after many hours of unsuccessful searching you will feel too tired to laugh with its exceptional jokes. If you are a patient type of guy you should try it.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

The classic of all classics.

It’s hard to imagine anyone who hasn’t played The Secret of Monkey Island or heard a name Guybrush Threepwood in adventure gaming. Following pirate wannabe on his quest to rescue governor Elaine Marley from the clutches of evil G.P. Le Chuck doesn’t get old even on the umpteenth re-play. Rediscovering old favorites became even easier with an ability to seamlessly switch from 1990s version to a remastered one in-game, at any moment it pleases you. Whether you prefer to look at updated visuals or nostalgically go through the original – you’re guaranteed hours of swashbuckling fun.

The Secret of Monkey Island is one of the finest games ever created. Impeccably designed, incredibly funny, wonderfully charming. While some areas have aged better than others, I still firmly believe that Ron Gilbert understood the adventure game genre better than anyone else.

I do have a few reservations about this Special Edition however - while I admire the effort put in to update all the art assets, the new style leaves a lot to be desired. It’s reminiscient of the art direction from the Curse of Monkey Island onwards, which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing, but I don’t think it works as well for this game. After Ron Gilbert ceased to be the lead on the series, it took a slightly different approach, which warranted a cartoony style.

3 Minutes to Midnight™ - A Comedy Graphic Adventure

3 Minutes to Midnight™ - A Comedy Graphic Adventure

Somewhere in New Mexico, an explosion shatters the night. Plucky teenager Betty Anderson wakes with a jolt. Where is she? Who is she?

Whatever blew up in the desert seems to have wiped her memory clean, but as she’ll soon learn, Betty has a lot more to worry about than amnesia. Like, say, a town full of people who aren’t what they seem, a corrupt mayor, a secret military base, the mafia, and a potbelly pig with a vendetta. Then there’s this little problem of a doomsday plot counting down to the extinction of the human race… and time’s running out.

Join Betty to crack the conspiracy that starts with a bang and ends at 3 Minutes to Midnight—if we’re lucky.

Classic adventure gameplay.

Inspired by such titles as The Secret of Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, and Sam & Max Hit the Road—3 Minutes to Midnight combines the point & click gameplay and clever humor with high-def cartoon art, an intuitive interface, and a compelling mystery.

Two playable characters.

Play as plucky teenager Betty Anderson and the ambitious and diplomatic mayor Eliza Barret—two characters on opposite sides of the spectrum—to unravel a plot much deeper than one would surmise at first glance.

A small town of strangers and secrets, all deeply connected.

All the characters in the game—as well as the world they live in—have a rich and detailed backstory, with clever and unexpected ties to each other. Scratching the surface won’t be enough to discover more than their apparent identities.

Puzzles up the wazoo.

Tired of the same repetitive, unoriginal puzzles? Then put on your thinking cap, because 3 Minutes to Midnight will keep your brain working on overclock! With over 200 unique objects available to solve the myriad of puzzles you’ll encounter.

Replayability.

When we say replayability, we’re talking hidden dialogues and events, characters that you might otherwise never see. Maybe that character you kept hearing about… wasn’t actually real, or maybe he was and just hid very well.

Multiple solutions to some puzzles.

Most of our big puzzles have been designed in such a way that there’s sometimes more than just the obvious solution. You might find an easy way to solve a problem, or maybe you’ll find a secret that unlocks more information about the backstory of our characters.

Elaborate hint system.

Our built-in hint system will highlight important objects and assist during those tense dialogue options. After all, we wouldn’t want you to get lost (or look for a walkthrough online!) So if you have the need, activate this option, or don’t.

“That doesn’t seem to work."—No more!

“That doesn’t work” is now a thing of the past! No more will you be stuck hearing the same phrase 5000 times in a row, because we made sure to write 5000 lines of unique dialogue specifically for this reason! All of those clever and funny, of course, for you to discover at your leisure.

A Vampyre Story

A Vampyre Story

A starting note that the play time does not reflect game length or completion time as I often leave games running whilst off doing other things.

A Vampyre Story is a fun point and click game that whilst not breaking any moulds of the genre it’s characters and dialogue I thought were witty and memorable and had me laughing out loud a fair few times. It also looks good, but the animations can sometimes ‘stick’ shall we say, although this is not a big issue.

Any fans of P&C’s will not be diasapointed in what this has to offer, although not the most challenging game out there, the puzzles aren’t ludicrously obscure as they can be in some other titles and range from simple to medium difficulty.

I picked this game up when it first came out on disc and I regretted never finishing it. I was thrilled that it showed up on Steam and I’m very happy my memories of the game weren’t just nostalgia, it’s very fun and polished. The tone and puzzles are reminiscent of classic LucasArts games and the art is top notch, even by today’s cartoon game standards.

Some have not liked the voice of Mona, the main protagonist. It is high pitched and I can see how it could annoy folks but I thought it fit and didn’t mind.

Ankh 2: Heart of Osiris

Ankh 2: Heart of Osiris

Play the first Ankh game instead, its slightly more enjoyable. Ankh 2 is a disappointment so far for me and not much new is offered in the game early on. I also bought Ankh 3… but I do not have high expectations, as the sequel to the first game is already a letdown after the first hour and a half. I will push through and complete it some day, possibly changing my review, and move on to the third game in the trilogy.

UPDATE: I finally finished the game….

I have good news and bad news… Chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4 all sucked…. That’s the bad news.

Could’ve been good but too many annoyances made this game pretty unplayable.

There are parts I really liked about this game, the story are actual puzzles were enjoyable. But that’s about it.

Technical glitches up the wazoo. Uggg. It completely crashed on me so many times and a couple of times after an event happened the game glitched, with dialogue popping up like it hadn’t happened and I couldn’t go back, couldn’t go forward. So lame. Also, talk about clicking on super tiny specific things or one tiny hidden area of the screen to find an exit. I literally had to move my cursor slowly across one oasis scene trying to find the one small spot that finally popped up as an exit.

Ankh 3: Battle of the Gods

The omens of the Battle of the Gods have been many, signaling the impending fight for supremacy over all other gods of Egypt. And of course, Assil will be caught in the middle of it all again. Together with his girlfriend Thara, he will have to prevent the sinister Seth from winning the battle and subjecting Egypt to his regime of terror. With the typical Ankh humour, numerous bizarre characters and gags by the wagonload, Ankh - Battle Of The Gods is again a candidate for the adventure gaming throne.

Then it is worth it! Otherwise, I’d avoid it. Ankh 3 is actually a decent improvement over its predecessor and includes a lot of your favorite characters and that humor from the series…but I honestly don’t think it is worth the increased price unless you were a die-hard fan of the other ones.

Broken Age

Broken Age

Broken Age is a game that I haven’t yet sat down to distill my thoughts on. It’s the game that brought Double Fine to my attention and would eventually lead me to becoming a key member in the community. Between running Game Club , Bad Golf , becoming a volunteer moderator on the forums, and so on, it’s hard for me to think about Broken Age or the DFA as a whole without stopping to ponder the impact of those activities on my life.

Real player with 36.3 hrs in game

My rating: 7+/10

Based on: two playthroughs (one full and one speedrun)

TL;DR: Double Fine’s Broken Age may have been one of the early success stories for the Kickstarter-backed projects, but it didn’t live up to the expectations of a long-starved fan of the point-and-click adventure games such as myself. Admittedly, that wasn’t entirely its fault: it’s a good game with a great production value for its budget, but it doesn’t exactly stand tall among the all-time greats of the genre, either. Not an instant classic, but very charming, it offers an intriguing coming-of-age story, memorable characters, excellent writing, art and sound design, but the second act is sort of a drag.
