Day of the Tentacle Remastered

Day of the Tentacle Remastered

A brief overview…

Goal: To stop an evil triangle from taking over the world.

Method: Travel back in time to the day before so that you can stop the triangle from becoming evil in the first place. However, the majority of the story revolves around blowing a large sum of money on a shopping channel product, and finding sources of electricity that you can plug toilets into.

Heroes: The true heroes of this game are a metalhead who has zero book smarts, a trainee doctor who cannot be trusted with her own scalpel, and that nerd from the first game who used to be a coward. This trio receives help along the way from an ex-villain mad scientist, the founding fathers, a hamster and a dead guy.

My previous article on my experiences with working on Day of the Tentacle Remastered cover a lot of my own history with the game, but don’t dive deep into my feelings about the remastered edition itself - after all, the game was more or less finished before I came onboard and I had plenty of time to play through it before I started working on it.

Re-creating low fidelity assets with greater detail removes a degree of ambiguity that different players invariably fill with different impressions. To one person, a few pixels here, might be interpreted as a smooth shape, while to another, the pixel edges define something more jagged - are the ends of Laverne’s fingers square or rounded? Are outlines fixed or varying width?

They tried to take the pointing & clicking out of a point ‘n click…

Wew this is easily the worst Monkey Island. Which saddens me as it is the only one I played as a kid so I’m pretty nostalgic for it.

The game does not use the mouse at all despite being a point ‘n click..the way the controls work is you control Guybrush with the arrow keys by turning left & right & pressing up to walk forward, Resident Evil style. Instead of highlighting items it shows three options on screen you can select with Page Up/Down depending on Guybrush’s view, so you will have to wrestle with the horrible movement to try and get him to look at whatever thing you want.

This game has certainly received a lot of negativity which i feel in many areas is highly warranted. Indeed the controls them self were so awkward compared to previous titles, that I was tempted to fall into the same camp as many before me and write this game off as the miss that sank the series. However persevere and you can uncover a rough gemstone of a game that has stepped its problem solving dilemma’s back up to a standard on par with the best of the series.

TIM SCHAFER’S “GRIM FANDANGO”!

I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream

Captivating Point and Click Adventure

I enjoyed playing through this game twice, I’d say that if you’re interested, you should pick it up.

It’s a story-based game inspired by the book of the same name by Harlan Ellison (who voices the character of AM in game).

☐ Don‘t look too long at it

☐ Paint.exe

Good, but this game was developed in the ’90s, so you can imagine that the graphics will reflect that era. The graphics are not bad at all. I’d say that they still hold up somewhat and the graphics don’t take away from the game.

Make no mistake about I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream….it is NOT a horror game, at least not in the typical sense. It’s not trying to make you jump in your seat and scream in shocked terror. It has no interest in what many would call “cheap thrills”. Instead, what this game wants to do is provoke your thought-process. It is a very cerebral game, with dark undertones that force you to think about the dark side of humanity, and whether or not there is redemption for our fatal flaws. It isn’t afraid to present you with disturbing topics such as suicide, rape, even genocide, and make you deal with them. Although there is a tint of light-heartedness, 99% percent of the game is drenched in an atmosphere of hopelessness as you scramble to make amends for the characters’ pasts in an attempt to thwart the diabolical supercomputer, AM.

Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis™

Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis™

If you like the Indiana Jones series and wish to see everything that are related to his numerous adventures Worldwide, this is one of the stones that you have to tread on. I have played and finished the 2003 Lucas Arts game Emperor’s Tomb before and did not hesitate to buy this 1992 game in year 2016, once i heard that it has completely unique set of events which were not replicated in any Indy film/game before or after. I wanted to finish the game by not reading any of hints or tips from a walkthrough guide -and i succeeded-, because adventuring through the untold dullness of life is THE INHERENT core of Indy adventures. This game gives that unique feeling of being an Indiana Jones even with 1992 graphics and sounds. Because, the feeling of playing Dr. Jones does not rely on eye-candy graphics, but lies with finding whatever way to wrestle through life even if it goes somewhere that was not intended initially.

YOU CHOSE WISELY.

One of the all time greats. I STRONGLY recommend this game, but it’s not for everyone.

It’s sequel is a legendary classic, and arguably the greater game (The fate of Atlantis), but the adventure starts here, and so should you. It’s time to wield the whip, search for treasure, and kick nazi ass like it’s 1938!

If you have even a passing interest in adventure games, lucasarts, or indiana jones, this is one of those games you will not forget. A bit frustrating by modern standards, Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade™ was released in 1989 for DOS, Amiga, and the Atari ST, and featured several innovations for it’s day. A dynamic scripting engine allowed for multiple solutions to many puzzles, and a progress system that encouraged replayability by rewarding you for finding alternate solutions to puzzles. It also contains the all important first implementation of the TALK verb, which, holy shit, allows you to talk to different characters and CHOOSE different dialogue options, as well as a LOOK verb, which allows indy to observe and commentate anything you might see on screen. It also did away with manual entry for adventure commands, allowing you to entirely point and click your way through the game. (imagine having to type LOOK AT OBJECT X 4000 times instead)

An incredibly fun and occasionally challenging LucasArts game. I can’t vouch for whether it’s faithful to the movie, the game stands pretty well on its own. Just remember download, add, and play this game on ScummVM, though, especially if you can find the FM-Towns version somewhere, which has better music and sound. Sure, using ScummVM means you lose the personalized save/load screen, but you get the ability to fast forward and save anywhere.

As for the game itself, the graphics and sound, while old, are still serviceable, and the mix of both combat with the traditional puzzle elements of point-and-click adventure games give the game some variety, even if the fist-fighting isn’t that deep, and can even be tedious, frustrating, and downright difficult at times. Additionally, anyone who has seen the Last Crusade probably already knows the story beats, even if there might be a few easter eggs to make note of and even a experience few endings different from that of the movie.

King’s Quest™ Collection

King’s Quest™ Collection

A Collection of 7 King’s Quest titles released from 1983-1994. It’s a great Inventory Adventure series that Sierra On-Line created back when MS-DOS & Windows 3.1/95/98 was still by popular demand. I grew up with King’s Quest 6-7 when I was a child.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-U9acpDcHo

In King’s Quest 1 - Quest for the Crown:

Enter the Kingdom of Daventry which was once a peaceful, rich and free of hardships land ruled by King Edward with 3 Magical Treasures; A Magic Shield which protects its bearer, A Magic Mirror which foretells the Future & finally, A Magic Treasure Chest which is filled with Gold. However, over the years, these 3 Treasures were lost thanks to those in power whos lies and deceit took advantage of King Edward’s Hardships. Now, King Edward is old and frail with no heir to the throne. So calls forth Sir Graham, one of his bravest, greatest and youngest Knights, to search the land and reclaim the 3 Magical Treasures. If successful, Sir Graham will become the new King of Daventry.

Games of my childhood always have a sweet spot with me, and this whole collection has been one of my favorites. My father introduced me to King’s Quest when I was young and he bought the first 4. I remember the rather unique official cheat books which required a special marker to make the invisivle ink to appear.

But to talk of this collection, the first four were originally text driven games. meaning that you have to type in commands like “Look at woman,” or “rub lamp.” The first three were then later re-worked with updated graphics (but still rather dated compared to today’s games). Starting with 5, gameplay shifted a little, instead of being text driven, they became what is now called “point and click.”

LOOM™

LOOM™

Loom is a fun and charming game with an interesting world and unique way of interacting it. Unfortunately, while this version does have voiced characters, some dialogue and scenes have been cut. I’d recommend the FM-Towns version run through ScummVM, which one can find with a quick google search if one wants a fuller experience. The EGA version is also the creator’s preferred version, which completely uncensored, so that version is recommended as well. Finally, listening to the audio drama, which is on YouTube, is also recommended to provide a bit more background on the world of Loom.

PROS: Mysterious and alluring world that is rich with lore. Interesting musical system, no hand-holding. Nice voice-acting.

CONS: First game of a planned trilogy that never came to fruition. Starting the first game to a project that’s been unfinished for around 25 years now may sound completely absurd to people who have never played Loom. Understandably so. Many different versions of Loom were released, and I’m disappointed to see that this was not a version cobbled together for the most content available.

Maniac Mansion

Maniac Mansion

“Maniac Mansion” is one of the first point and click adventures of LucasArts (published back in 1987) and one of the games that set the tone at the beginning of the genre’s golden era. Beautiful colorful aesthetics, clever puzzles, multiple characters, fantastic humor and iconic music are some of its characteristics. Yet, it’s gameplay logic is still a little bit primitive compared to the following LucasArts’ games and I’m not a big fun of deaths and dead ends. But it is one the most classical games out there so you have to play it.

Real player with 13.6 hrs in game

LucasArts classic wacky adventure and a predecessor of an even bigger classic – Day of The Tentacle. Nostalgic point’n’click not without its flaws.

The set-up is simple and is largely left off-screen – you and a few of your friends (which you get to choose at the beginning of the game) need to rescue your girlfriend Sandy from being kidnapped by Dr. Fred for experiments. Starting at the gate of not-very-maniac-looking-yet mansion, you’re making your way in to find a place that manages to have nuclear reactor, gigantic telescope, man-eating plant and strange, walking tentacles all under the same roof. Oh, and there is a basement. In which you, no doubt, will be held on multiple occasions. So… Where’s Sandy? Why is everyone talking about some meteor? How can a tentacle be depressed? All these questions will be answered as you’re finding your way around a strange house, trying to avoid its mad inhabitants, opening lots and lots of doors and collecting a hell of a lot of useless stuff, in the best point’n’click fashion.

PROS: Voice-acting is superb, environments are exceptional. iMUSE works beautifully in this, making the soundtrack feel alive. The game is completely unaltered, and concept art from the original development decades ago was used to fill in the blanks instead of simply extrapolating from what could be seen. The puzzles are just enough of a challenge, and the game is a fair length for a point n’ click adventure. Guybrush and all other sprites look fantastic.

“Monkey Island 2 - LeChuck’s Revenge” comes right from the golden era of point and click adventures games when Lucas Arts was releasing one masterpiece after another. It is easily one of the most hilarious games ever existed while it packs some nice hand drawn visuals, iconic characters, unforgettable music and many clever puzzles. Unfortunately it is also one of the most difficult adventures ever made, so that after many hours of unsuccessful searching you will feel too tired to laugh with its exceptional jokes. If you are a patient type of guy you should try it.
