Headlander

Headlander

Headlander is a 70s style sci-fi Metroidvania game from “Double Fine Games” and published by Adult Swim.

During the current indie renaissance we are currently seeing a decent amount of Metroidvania games none of which from Castlevania or Metroid but that’s a conversation for another time.

A few videos ago we looked at the rather excellent Ghost 1.0 and actually Headlander is in many ways very similar so is it worth jumping in for some more Metroidvania loveliness yet again?

Headlander sees you in a futuristic Dystopia where mankind have replaced their bodies with robotic ones. The main premise of the game is you are the last human awoken from cryogenic storage and thus only your head has survived. So you find yourself as a floating head in a jar which can float around and attach yourself to other robots. The setting of the game is vaguely reminiscent of something like Logan’s Run in terms of style.

Headlander is a game made in 2D Metroidvania style and reminds me of a game I played in the past titled Apotheon. They’re both in 2D and look like low budget games. However, the similarities end there. Apotheon is set in ancient Greece whereas Headlander is set in a sci-fi 1970s world with both a retro and futuristic look. Headlander represents retrofuturism. The music has a groovy beat and sounds like 1970s disco.

You begin the game choosing a male or female Headlander. You are just a disembodied head inside a spacesuit helmet. You have no torso or larynx. Therefore, you have no voice. There is a jet thruster in the place where your larynx should be. You are the only human in the game and are guided by an AI named Earl, a male voice with an American southern accent.

Antipole DX

Antipole DX

Antipole DX is a fast-paced, retro action-platformer– using gravity manipulation!

Join our mysterious space outlaw, as he explores an “abandoned” spacecraft in hopes of finding his next meal ticket. Little does he know, the ship isn’t deserted like he thought, and now his only hope is to master the power of the mighty gravity-manipulating device: the Antipole.

Generate gravity fields with the Antipole to defeat vicious robots, solve puzzles and run on ceilings as you jump and shoot through the game while powering up the device to it’s true potential.

  • Reverse gravity in the area around you for short periods of time to climb higher and jump further.

  • Generate a field of gravity that can affect many things - enemies, objects, and even acid pools will fall along the new direction of gravity.

  • Master the power of the Antipole, and unlock new challenge stages that test your skills.

  • Clear stages fast enough to be on the online leaderboards!

  • Play through the game on hard mode for the ultimate challenge!

Waking Mars

Waking Mars

Platform games aren’t at the top of my list - mainly because of their limited world, low replayability and (many of them) being highly linear - however, Waking Mars is one of the most enjoyable games I’ve been playing lately, and for me, one of the best platform games to date. Its sci-fi/ Mars setting and artwork caught my attention; but it was the goal of creating and encouraging an ecosystem within the Red Planet that sold me on it.

The story is simple and straightforward, but it is intelligently executed and really intriguing. Character development is little, but just right. There are no enemies, only yourself, the ‘flauna’ and the environment - but you might be surprised at just how much of a threat you can pose to yourself. The goals are laid out before you in a no-nonsense manner: you are exploring, searching, gathering, manipulating, creating, and de-constructing to create, in a more favourable way to the environment’s (and your) needs. There is something to be said for balance, and you learn by trial and error; but don’t worry, there is nothing that you can’t undo - though it may require a measure of patience.

Hard science fiction is a rare guest in video games. Not having any evil aliens or cool laser-shooting guns isn’t a good premise for dynamic action. Luckily, Waking Mars isn’t actually aiming at cheap thrills or fast-paced shooting, but rather prefers to be a meditative journey and succeeds at it.

The year is 2093, player takes the role of Liang, chinese astronaut, taking part in international planetary mission to Mars, studying life that was discovered in an underground cavern system. If the thought of some green evil aliens pointing their death-ray guns had crossed your mind at this point, shoo it away. Or maybe you’ve thought of some ancient ruins, secure vaults, containing secrets of advanced precursors? You’re wrong again. Life that has been discovered is rather primitive. It is a strange kind of hybrid between plants and animals. It’s called Zoa. Not much is known about these species; you will be the first and only human to make contact with it and observe it in its natural habitat.

A.R.E.S.: Extinction Agenda

A.R.E.S.: Extinction Agenda

I’m reviewing this game as it’s in a bubble. There’s an updated version of the game, that interested people should get. It seems to be just an improved version of A.R.E.S., if so, that’s what you want.

A.R.E.S. is almost a Mega Man game. You get a character which has a array of guns, who runs through levels populated by enemies, and beats them by shooting them.

However this game falls short of that mark because a few features. While the hero doesn’t defeat enemies and get their powers, he does beat an enemy and often gets an upgrade but he doesn’t receive a specific power. In addition this is a linear game. There’s five levels and the player has to beat each in order, though he’s able to go back and replay old levels.

Title: A.R.E.S.: Extinction Agenda

Genre: Action, Indie

Developer: Extend Studio

Publisher: Extend Studio, ORiGO GAMES

Release Date: 20 Jan, 2011

You’re a lady in a spacesuit, on a space station with mad robots. Shooting things.

Main Review

You’re a woman in a spacesuit on a lone mission to find out what happened in deep space, on an abandoned junk station. Something about this game feels strangely familiar. Ah well, at least she’s called Valkyl and not Samus, right?

We could easily classify this game as “The evolution of platform/shooters games in flash from the web”. A beautiful artistic audio-visual section and solid gameplay make this title a sure recommendation.

PROS:

  • Spotless artistic direction (the style of the characters, enemies, weapons and unique backgrounds give the game its own personality).

  • Excellent soundtrack (As a lover of electronic music, i could be listening for hours to the various tracks that create a correct atmosphere for an action/exploration game like this).

OK after reading the good and bad reviews I decided I needed to write one

I like the game… a lot, despite its “shortcomings”, and I’m picky. The gravity manipulation weapon along with the jetpack are so fun. And I liked all the weapons dual fire modes. I think it gets a worse rap than it deserves, especially for a careful player that doesn’t just “run” straight into the open thinking he’s not going to get effed up. Along with great puzzles for the gravity gun and the ability to wreck pretty much everything in the game without shooting a gun if your insanely up to the challenge, great music and very cool unique art and enemies, I am completely recommending this game.

Colossus Mission - adventure in space, arcade game

Colossus Mission - adventure in space, arcade game

I think the people most likely to enjoy this are fans of cave flyers, so I give it a recommended rating since that appears to be the game’s target audience. Meaning if you look at this list and think to yourself “yeah my kind of games,” then Colossus Mission will be for you. Everyone else will probably want to hold off on it, or at least wait to see if it gets any substantial updates.

In about an hour of play, I completed 55 of 73 levels. I expect it would take me another hour to beat the rest of them; the later levels were really becoming a steep challenge for me. The scoring system allows you to spend your earned points to skip stages if you find them too difficult. Each skip costs 5 points, and you can earn up to 3 points per stage depending on how well you perform while completing them

COLOSSUS MISSION is an arcade game with raw and slightly angular graphics and a various levels of difficulty. The first stages are easy but then the game becomes much more difficult. I recommend it to players who are interested in flawless playing games on time.

Digital Rose

Digital Rose

Good:

-Animations evoke 70’s anime and Mega Man X4 simultaneously

-Music is composed well even if it’s always the same instrumentation

-Some enemy designs are well done and very cute

Bad:

-All environments look like recolors

-Game is painfully easy until it pulls out multiple bosses with obnoxious

disappearing/reappearing platform difficulty spike

-Infinite dash mechanic feels cheap rather than rewarding or visceral

-Nailgun feels like shit, automatically bursts for you then puts the classic Mega ‘3 shots on screen at all times’ rule on you

Gold Rush In The Oort Cloud

Gold Rush In The Oort Cloud

a strange game i’m not sure i’ve ever played something similar to it.

on one hand - a typical platformer, where you jump and shoot; but on the other hand - its space with asteroids, and their gravity where you can jump from one asteroid to another, and this gravity influences how fly your bullets - and it really makes the game special, not similar to others.
