Canary in a Crater

Canary in a Crater

Review is based on Version 1.03

It is a fun little game. Controls are solid and upgrades are useful. Achievements work and are simple enough to get.

You could probably finish the game in a few hours, definitely within a day if you’re trying for that. This is a GREAT game if you’re busy and would like to play a game for 20 minutes before work and feel like you accomplished something.

Game play is a simple loop. You dig down collecting upgrade orbs and treasures. Sell treasure. Pay for upgrades and resources to get down farther where higher priced treasure is. This can be a bit ‘grindy’ but that is what this style of game is meant to be. If you are not into that style of game this might not be for you.

Canary in a Crater is a clone of Miner Dig Deep, but it’s graphics are far better and in my view super cute! ^_^ Movement is smooth, but seems slower than Miner Dig Deep. There are upgrades and things in this game that Miner Dig Deep does not have, but I did not play enough to see them myself so I can not comment upon if those aspects make the game overall stronger then Miner Dig Deep.

The developer seems genuinely into improving the game and making it better then it is and is open to critical feedback.

Grayland

Grayland

Find Your Color

Grayland is a simple 2D puzzle platformer that takes place in a world without color. The player controls a gray blob that has found a way to restore color to Grayland. They decide to attempt to restore color to their entire homeland, grasping on the hopes that they can restore their own color as well.

Playing as the gray blob, you can stick to walls within the environment and jump or detach off of them to travel and move throughout levels. Use this wall-sticking ability to interact with the environment as well, bouncing off of walls or moving platforms as you stay on a wall to help yourself advance through the world.

There are several other blobs that live in Grayland that also wish for their color to be restored. They all have some issues with the world or with their lives. Restoring their color might not be the solution they need to their issues, but maybe it can help them out?

Features

  • Relaxing gameplay within a platformer

  • 30 unique levels

  • A story about discovering your self-worth

  • Several characters to interact with

This game is simply brilliant !

It’s designed around puzzles you need to solve in order to exit each level. First ones are very easy, which kept me satisfied enough to continue and try to crack those puzzles as fast as i can. But i have to admit, last ones are super tricky and took me a lot of thinking to crack. I’m amazed by the progressive difficulty of the game, as you go deeper and deeper into those caves. Something which is indeed not easy to balance. Thankfully, the developper had the smart idea to add one element at each level to complicate the puzzles and thus, making them each time more thrillng to solve. Furthermore, they sometimes have a known mechanic you experiment in a previous solved one (to keep confidence), and a new mechanic, which forced me sometimes to change the way i think in order to crack it properly.

Edit to review: Absolutely amazing game it took me forever to figure out some of the puzzles so hopefully my play through will be helpful! This game requires you to constantly think outside of the box to solve puzzles especially in the later floors with a ton of neat mechanics which makes it challenging but super rewarding as you progress. The music in the game is chill and the environment looks really nice and mellow as well that gives you a peaceful feeling as you want to destroy your computer as you stretch your brain to the limits trying to progress. The creator of this game made this in a year by himself! which I can’t even fathom the amount of work it took to come up with those puzzles, mechanics, and make them all work together. The story is interesting and well thought out also you learn about two races and a cycle of rebirth which makes you want to continue to progress as well! Definitely recommend this game and if you get stuck check my walk through for some help ^_^

It was a nice pleasant experience. A lot longer than what I thought it would be. I did go for all the achievements to be able to decode the messages. The jump limit makes you think a lot.

Miner: Dig Deep

Although I’ve never made it all the way to the bottom, I’ve really enjoyed this game! I’m ready to take a break from it, but may come back to it later. I love the simple mechanics, but I do have one suggestion. I’ve noticed the rocks and resources are in the same places for each new game. If you could find a way to randomize each new game but keep the numbers and zones of resources and rocks essentially the same, you would have a truly world-class game. As a retired developer/tester, I can appreciate the effort that goes into software. If it’s infeasible to add this feature, I understand totally. I salute you!

I like mining games, and I didn’t think this one would keep me going for so long but 21 hours later and I’m still pottering away in my mine. Aside from some minor quibbles (while a stone will push you away if you’re only a little close to it, this same mechanic doesn’t happen on lifts from what I can tell and lifts don’t work after lvl 1000 - can’t tell if this is coming or if this is a feature of the game), I enjoy this. Wish it had some achievements, but that’s just me, lol.

Rise 2.0

Rise 2.0

Nice and simple game, great music and concept. It would be a very good game for its scale if it got some more polish in the way how the controls work and how the game communicates its concepts.

Some feedback for the developer(s):

  1. To jump I drag my mouse pointer and that’s fine. What’s weird is that it seems like the game tracks not how I drag the pointer on the screen, but how it moves in the game world. Meaning that if i fall down my arrow starts pointing down and I have to cancel my attempt.
