ASTRAL

ASTRAL

You play a young boy with a large head who breaks out of some sort of research facility to explore a world which has gone to pieces. Shown mostly in black and white with odd splashes of colour, you venture across the city to an underground bunker where you discover your true destiny. Along the way you’ll encounter and be chased by horrifying enemies, solve the occasional jumping puzzle, and best of all, occasionally wear a mind-control helmet which lets you take control of other beings and make them do your whim in order to progress further. The environment flows naturally from one location to the next, with the joins being very smooth and gradual. The physics engine is top notch, and you never feel like you missed a jump because the game wasn’t reading your controls correctly. The camera is very dynamic, and your character moves in and out of the scenery following the curves of the land in a pleasant way, giving the world more depth rather than just “run right”. Everything is explained through “show don’t tell” and the lack of voice acting makes the game that much more atmospheric.

I just cannot recommend this game, it’s terrible; sometimes you’ll spend a minute walking on direction, sometimes you’ll spend five minutes getting past a certain bit then have to go all the way back when you die, you may decide to have a break and when you reload the game find you have to do the previous ten-fifteen minutes to get back to where you are because the chapter system is broken, this game is not enjoyable and for the price not even worth it, play black the fall, inside and limbo if you enjoy these types of games.

As far as the story and visuals go, I enjoyed this experimental game, but the platforming was a bit clunky. For the most part, it’s a puzzle-platformer with a psychological twist. The narrative is told from the perspective of a girl that is having relationship problems with her boyfriend. After each platforming section, you get to play a stealth mini-game where you are trying to isolate your boyfriend from the crowd by creating distractions. I suspect that game has 2 endings depending on your actions, I am pretty sure I got the bad one. Even though I kinda knew where the story was going, it still got me, and I am considering replaying it just to see if I can get a better outcome. It takes around 2-3 hours to finish if you don’t skip any puzzles, although you do have that option if you keep getting stuck. Aside from that, the game has nice achievement support, assuming that you want to replay the game with no hits and so on. Overall, the game is very creative, but that creativity occasionally comes at the cost of intuitive gameplay.

2h 15 / 125 falls first playthrough, amazing game. Sure it’s a jump king clone but hey jump king is a great game and so is this. One of the better foddy style games for sure. Amazing value too :)

I absolutely love Jump King, so when I first saw this lidl version, I instantly wanted to try it. I made first map of JK without falling and have 45 of 48 achievements in it. Still first map of this game took me 3 hours to finish.

Compared to Jump King, it has a bit different mechanics, lot of jumps you can screw up imo and it’s first map is definitely harder for newcomers to this genre of games.

I like the idea with pineapple, so you have atleast one rescue point. And it’s definitely worth it to return for pineapple when you are one screen above it.

This game is fabulous. It’s visually intriguing and difficult but doable. A solid platformer only enhanced by an engaging story of remorse and depression. I felt that everything from play-style to writing made this game a beautiful story that you got to experience with the characters. I really recommend this one and I’m totally going to check out games from this dev from now on. Make sure to check this one out!

I received this game for free, but my views are my own. There are both things I like and don’t like about this game and they are expressed in this short review.

Hopbound is a continuing narrative in the AppSirGames-verse (creators of Dere Evil.exe) that puts you in the shoes of Mayumi. A woman looking for her supposedly deceased boyfriend. Is he really dead? Does AppSirGames know more than they are letting on? Only one way to find out.

Hard platforming, a scary atmosphere, and a meta-story that will leave you wanting more. Hopbound has something for just about any platforming/horror fan out there. I personally can’t wait for their next title.

Just Ski+

Just Ski+

I love the premises of this Unity game - you can choose in fact between better graphics or better performance, instead of the usual stupid “ultra”, “poor”, “medium” and such qualities.

This is a small physics indie game, small even because it’s short, and minimalistic for sure - the whole game has in fact just two colors.

The white of the snow will be the main color of the whole game, since you’re playing as a skier, while the rest of the minimalistic world will be colored of black, red, orange, blue and so on.

Real player with 19.1 hrs in game

Just Ski is fun physics game but it lacks a lot of basic features that you would expect from this genre. As of right now, there is only one map that you have to beat with no save points. It probably takes around 10 minutes, not that you could do on a first try. As you can see I have been trying to beat it for over 5 hours. In other words, you will replay the first section a lot (like 50 times at least). Somehow I am not bored of it just yet. Something about the relaxing music and the atmosphere makes the deaths less stressful.

Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back

Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back

Earlier this year, when I learned Bubsy was coming back in a new game after more than two decades, I, like many others, was stunned to learn about this. After that package of disaster known as Bubsy 3D got the franchise stuffed away and locked up in the attic, I never, I repeat, NEVER, in a million years, would think there’d be another official Bubsy game. We were all taken completely by surprise. Had my jaw dropped any further down, it would’ve detached from my face and fallen to the ground. At the same time, however, after thinking about why they’d bring back the Bubsy franchise, I was rather more optimistic about said franchise’s revival than I was pessimistic. The game looked good in the trailer. If Accolade were to ever bring Bubsy back, it couldn’t be that they were trying to make another bad Bubsy game. It sure as the Devil wouldn’t be too hard to make this better than Bubsy 3D! Accolade might’ve asked themselves, “What could possibly go wrong?”, but we, the gamers, would be the ones finding out once the game got released.

Target Audience: No one. That’s right. No one.

Summary:

Look, normally I put a video review together with this after I’ve taken the time to write a script and all that jazz. I mean, that’s the whole Youtube reviewer thing. But I can’t wait for that process at this point. I have to warn people about this game. Bubsy is not back. Bubsy was never back. Bubsy needs to have a bullet put in its head if this is how he’s going to come back. I’m speechless as a game that is normally 30 bucks has the gall to present what it did here and expect that Bubsy is going to come back in another form.

Pogostuck: Rage With Your Friends

Pogostuck: Rage With Your Friends

Pogostuck: Rage With Your Friends is a well-designed, fun, colourful and ambient rage game that stretches the lines of human sanity, determination and pain. On the surface, Pogostuck looks and breathes like a bouncy, Getting over It-esque, online, fun challenging game; however, this fantasy is destroyed after around 25 hours of playtime. In total, the first map took me around 50 hours to beat, which can be visualised below:

0-3 hours: “This is pretty hard but I’m going to beat it.”

4-10 hours: “This is kind of hard but I’m making progress.”
