Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap

Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon’s Trap was originally made for the Sega Master System and ported to the Game Gear and Turbo Grafx-16. It involved the main character, Wonder Boy, fresh from his last adventure getting cursed by a dragon’s curse and then roaming the land to try to fix that curse.

It also was a fantastic game that rivaled entries like Metroid and allowed players to return to areas they had been in before to find new rooms with abilities earned over time. It was essentially a predecessor to what would be known as a Metroidvania.

This is how people make an HD Remake of a old game. No crappy graphics, no 90’s radio quality music.

This game is awesome! I guess the saga is one of the first Metroidvania games to exist, playing it feels a bit like playing a platformer Zelda game, but without puzzles to waste your time, you can explore, fight monsters, challenge bosses, aswell as look for secrets. Why didn’t I met this game before? Where have this been all my life? (Probably it’s Monica’s fault…)

This game doesn’t force you to grind so you can buy equipment, or at least not that much, some equipments you need to go killing monsters so you be able to buy them, but still, the game doesn’t make you waste hours killing the same monster for coins to buy your equipment (unless you want to get a certain equipment that is supposed to be acquired way later in the game).

My playtime: 14.1h (based on steam, game completed, bad ending)

Intro

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee® is a puzzle game with a bit of stealth element where you have to dodge obstacles and avoid enemies to save your fellow aliens from being killed.

Pros:

  • 2 endings

  • Secret areas

  • Freedom to save or kill the aliens

  • Puzzles are not too easy and not too hard either

Cons:

  • Cutscenes don’t run smoothly

  • Terrible controls

  • Tile-based and slow movement

  • Weird saving mechanics

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty Review

This is my review/opinion on the new Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty! Before you start you may want to watch the lovely trailer here if you haven’t already.

You can also watch the trailer to Alf’s Escape here if you want to since I will be talking a little bit about it. Thank you and enjoy!

Intro

Oddworld: New ‘n’ Tasty is remaster of the original masterpiece Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee which was developed by Oddworld Inhabitants back in 1997 which you can buy here .

I love the Oddworld series. I own all of the games in the series, and in fact have bought Abe’s Oddyssee four times - once for Playstation, once for PC, once on GOG.com and again on Steam. Now I’ve effectively bought it a fifth time in the shape of New’n’Tasty.

First of all, it looks absolutely stunning. JAW have managed to capture the look and style of the original game whilst bringing it bang up to date - the new character animations are gorgeous, background effects really add to the atmosphere, and the 3D effects work without being distracting.

Bubsy Two-Fur

Bubsy Two-Fur

For the time, the game had purrfectly acceptable level design; it just didn’t age well in the face of the relatively homogenized (milk pun? Sure, let’s go with that), and, honestly, much betfur ubiquitious one-lane, always-move-right standard we have today.

So, think the level design is bad? Keep dying on the first stage? I can actually get to stage 7 with all nine lives, at this point, and I’ll tell you how.

Think of every level as having 4+ “planes”, none of which necessarily intfuract with one another well. There’s sometimes a “dungeon” plane, there’s the ground, there’s the roof-plane, and there are usually 2-3 regions above the roofs.

I’ve seen so many people claim that Bubsy games are suposedly awful, but to my surprise, these two aren’t as bad as I expected it to be. Wouldn’t really call them masterpieces in any way, but they are actually pretty decent. I personally enjoyed the games despite them being ridiculously hard at times since it’s a one hit instadeath sorta type of deal you get with it, but thankfully it comes with a save state feature that makes things much more easier.

My only major problems are that the audio has a mild issue, in which a cracking sound appears every couple minutes or so and as for the gameplay itself; In the first game, it feels like Bubsy is running on ice 24/7, which gets really annoying at some points and you can get killed off-camera by certain obstacles since the camera is way too zoomed in on Bubsy. Speaking of things that can kill you, some seemingly innocent looking things can kill you as well, like a bubble gum machine or a brightly colored, round shaped innocent looking car, which is confusing as hell when you first play the game. However, in Bubsy II, it is a big improvement and abstains from certain mistakes Bubsy I tended to make. Overall it’s a 7/10 buy and I would especially recommend getting it if it’s on sale.

Legend of Kay Anniversary

Legend of Kay Anniversary

I among many other people who bought this played this as a kid but by no means is this game only fun because of nostalgic value. These sort of kid like platforming games is what pc honestly needs.

  • Great graphical update from the original

  • Combat is great among most hack & slash games, its pretty solid on all levels

  • Platforming is fun and brings you back to when platformers weren’t only 2d indie hardcore platformers

  • The sound is a huge bump up in quality, although I did experience a few very minor odd sound placements but I won’t detract any points from it

Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus®

Oddworld: Abe’s Exoddus®

This is honestly one of my favourite games of all time, I don’t usually do recommendations/reviews but I feel the Oddworld games have never gotten enough attention and I really encourage everyone to give this series a try.

The game is absolutely amazing, it deals with issues like consumerism, class, culture, race all in one and yet despite the serious tones the game never strays from humour or trying to take itself too seriously while still being completely relevant in today’s world. The game is a cinematic platformer, and you definitely feel the weight of everything you do in this game, whether you walk, jump, fall, hoist yourself up a ledge, roll, pull a lever etc, everything has weight to it and really feels like you are actually experiencing a world and not a game, yes it does take a bit of time to get used too especially if you are used to more traditional platformers but thanks to very responsive controls you will get the hang of it in no time, the game also mixes up a lot of action based sequences and puzzle sequences that require something known as gamespeak, inspired by point and click games these are essentially commands that you will use through the game to rescue your fellow Mudokons (Abe’s Species) or when possessing Abes enemies or the wildlife of oddworld you can use gamespeak to your advantage to make things easier.

Nominated for the “test of time” award. This was my absolute favourite game when I was a kid and I still love it to this day.

It may be partly because I only owned about 3 games at the time but I must’ve sunk more hours into this game than any other.

The atmosphere and world are great, a dark story with just the right amount of humour. Abe is the last hope to free his enslaved people, who are forced to work in dangerous conditions by greedy slave traders who care only about profit, but if you get bored of all that you can press a button to make Abe fart, which causes all Mudokons next to him to take step back, and those further away to giggle.

Umihara Kawase

Umihara Kawase

Amazing game. Umihara Kawase is a platformer where most of the gameplay revolves around using an elastic fishing line to get around the level and attack enemies. Think the grappling hook from worms - except the elasticity adds a huge amount of complexity. Combined with the rock-solid physics, this leads to a very fun game that ramps up the difficulty to insane levels, requiring serious speedrunner rubberband tactics to just pass later levels.

The fishing line has a seemingly infinite learning curve, 40 hours in and I’m still learning new techniques. Initially you’ll be using it to swing across pits and climb upwards, but soon you’ll find yourself using the tension to slingshot yourself across levels, or ‘rocket jump’ over hazards. The layout of the levels make this as much puzzle as platforming: particular levels can take forever to figure out, though if you are having difficulty you can consult the library of replays that the community shares through the steam workshop integration.

Real player with 50.0 hrs in game

My favorite of the Umihara Kawase games, through the least forgiving. UK is a purely arcade experience, with no story or any other unnecessary trappings. The game is presented in stages, where you start at point a and try to get to point b, mainly by experimenting with the physics of your fishing hook.

The big draw is that a lot of the stages have multiple exits and/or can be beaten in a different manner depending on the level of your skill with the fishing hook. The hook has some cool physics, especially considering how the old game is. The original UK has the best gameplay “feel” to me; it feels faster and the hook physics just seem more springy in a good way than the sequels. Learning how to use the hook to throw Umi all over the place in very rewarding.

Jet Set Radio

Jet Set Radio

Have you ever wanted to be a rollar-blading punk, rollin' around the city tagging walls, and stickin' it to the man?

No? Maaaan fuck you get out of here yes you have. This game is known far across the land for it’s kickin' soundtrack, beats so thick you could bounce a coin off ‘em. Also, it’s so old GBA could run it, so don’t sweat the specs. Only worry is the keyboard controls suck harder than your EX girlfriend, so grab an Xbox 360 controller and get going.

Now the objective of the game is simple, roll around the city, tag some walls, and keep away from the fuzz. However, this is all done to the sweet sonic sound that will be oozing out of the audio device of your choosing. It also helps that this game has graphically dated better than you could ever dream of. (Oh snap son.) You might get one Jet rank on your first playthrough. Might. If you wanna get Jet on every mission you must first study the anicent urban staking gurus.

“Who are you! What’s your name? Super Brothers!”

Jet Set Radio is one of those games you most likely saw a demo of at a Target or Best Buy back in the early 2000s but never really got to play because you were too cool for a Dreamcast. Luckily, this PC port exists. This game is the perfect mix of skating and graffiti with a soundtrack to match and graphics that are considerably better than those of today’s games. The added danger of being tackled by street guards, being shot at by a crazed police captain, having missiles fired from helicopters, and run over by motorcycle riding police makes it more fun

Beyond Good and Evil™

Beyond Good and Evil™

About The Game

Beyond Good & Evil, published by Ubisoft in 2003. Where do I start with this game? First off, I want to say that this is a good PC port. It’s not perfect, but it gets the job done. I will explain why later. What’s the premise to this game? You play as Jade, a reporter who lives with her pig-uncle Pey’j, taking care of orphans on your lighthouse reservation. In this planet called Hillys, Hillyans fight for survival as evil DomZ, alien-like creatures, take over the planet. A combat force called the Alpha Sections has been sent to fight back the DomZ, but when the Alpha Sections fail to show up during attacks, a suspicious Jade goes undercover for a resistance force called IRIS to see what the Alpha Sections are really up to. Camera in hand, you participate in various undercover missions to expose the Alpha Sections for who they really are.

Beyond good and evil - это классическое игровое приключение, сделанное с душой, во времена когда у юбисофта еще была душа…
