Rediscover the 90’s

Supa Birdie Boi is a platformer game enclosed within a simple colour palette and 8 bit sounds. Pixel-art graphics and an old LCD-green shade both give off that nostalgic 90’s feel, resembling Game Boy screens. The keyword here is simplicity, directed by cute, cheerful design. Everything complemented by that old-school, upbeat music, which you’ll hum or whistle long after exiting the game.

Fathom the Trouble

The Animal Kingdom is recently dealing with quite a nuisance. A bunch of geese called Menageese Gang has risen to a #1 public enemy rank. Their razor-sharp intellect and prankster nature overshadow other critters, so they are impossible to handle. They are also indistinguishible from other geese, so no one really knows their true identities. They deploy these assets to nasty deeds towards the animal society - setting traps, stealing Eggs, plucking too many feathers is to name a few. Other geese quickly declared obedience to the Gang, making life less bearable for the rest of the Kingdom.

Experience the Journey

Birdie, the protagonist, picks up a rumour about the Legendary Bread - a snack capable of granting a wish on the first bite. Given a terrible goose situation that has recently developed, he decides to undertake the great journey through four varying lands to find the Bread and make a wish - to disband the gang, make them docile and restore peace in the Animal Kingdom.

Face the Challenge

Every time Birdie feels being confronted, he will simply vanish in a blink of an eye. No weaponry or fighting allowed, only being nimble! Well polished jumping skills are your only way of succeeding.

The Menageese Gang has stolen precious Eggs from their owners, and they are scattered in well hidden or seemingly unreachable places. Finding them all will require sharp eye and sharp movements!

Although most levels can be finished with little to no practice, let the cute graphics not fool you! It’s going to require level knowledge and true skill to unlock every achievement! (Which should add enough replay value for all those completionists we love and hold dear).

Flicky was an early looping platforming game on arcade that was made by Sega of Japan in 1984 which then got ported on some platforms at that time. Yep, it’s that old. Then in 1991 Sega decided to bring it onto their fancy japanese modem for Sega Megadrive as one of the games that you could download, thus making a port, by Sega of Japan as well I believe. I am pretty sure that modem device couldn’t hold big games, so they had to fill it in with small ones, like Flicky port. And probably quick ones too.

Annalynn

Annalynn

I would like to preface this review by stating that I have been aware of this game’s development since early 2019. At that time, I acquired an early build of Annalynn from 2016 from the developer Cruise Elroy’s Twitter page. This version lacked many of the features of the 2021 version, and was more similar to an 80s arcade game (perhaps a bit more blatant with its influences as well). Nonetheless, I liked it.

Then I found out in November 2020 the game was being remade, through Cruise’s gameplay demos he posted on Twitter. I thought it looked better than ever before. I then played the SAGE demo and loved it. I replayed it often trying to inch toward a higher score each time. Of course, the demo ended after 6 rounds.

Antonball Deluxe

Antonball Deluxe

I want to write a proper review later, once I’ve beaten the games with continues. But man I wish this game was better known. It’s amazing.

So, pretty much, this game is the Shovel Knight of arcade games, and by extension, Gameboy Advance games that were arcade game collections. I am fully aware this is an incredibly specific niche, but this game fills this niche flawlessly. Doing everything you liked about arcade games and GBA games while cutting the rubbish stuff out (Like having a non backlit screen and having to pay per play!)

Real player with 31.0 hrs in game

DISCLAIMER: I helped provide QA for this game although I list my honest opinions about the overall experience.

Antonball Deluxe is an expansion on the studio’s Gameboy Jam submission Antonball Classic with a myriad of technical changes and improvements. Some of these differences include an expanded moveset, two separate game-modes along with the main game, dozens of original characters plus several indie guest characters, online play, and more.

Antonball Arcade

Players control one of 4 characters initially and are tasked with smashing their way across 5 stages (with their ball(s) of course) using lives and continues that can be earned often more throughout a run. Despite the simplicity of the game at the surface the difficulty on a first playthrough can take an unsuspecting player by surprise. It’s the most difficult of the two singleplayer gamemodes but can be beaten within a few hours or faster given your skill level with platformers.

Bouncy Cube

Bouncy Cube

Lucky me gets to write the first warning for gamers for yet another asset flip scam from ‘beans rolls’.

Bouncy Cube is a Unity Asset flip, what Valve calls a “fake game”. The “developer”, beans rolls, took the Bouncy Cube 2d Unity Store tutorial/demo/game asset pack from the real developers, Game HUB, changed the name, and dumped the result onto Steam. They’re attempting to scam people into buying this, so they can get your money for someone else’s work.

Cats In Space

Cats In Space

Cats In Space is adventure and arcade game with a little storyline. In game you are taking control of two cats : Gray and Orange (You are able to dress them up in warderobe) . In space you need to move without gravitation and the only help is that you can stop by using “freeze” skill. You will have to fight against aliens, avoid traps and collect collectibles. In game there is four modes listed. Carrer (over 30 levels), Time attack, Online PvP and Level constructor! You will have fun while helping the main characters.

Career : This is main mode with the storyline. You are playing as a two cats in space. Compared to other modes this one does not count time, but draws attention to : full life, if alarm has been turned on, if star has been found.

Time Attack : Those stages has been designed to slow you down as much as it’s possible. Now you don’t need to worry about buttons or collectable objects, but especially for your life and time. You can use this mode to play against your friend offline on one computer by comparing time.

Online PvP : There you can search for opponent or play with friend. The faster and more precise player will win! Just type a room name with you would like to connect/create or leave it empty to join random room.

Level Constructor : In this mode you can construct levels by yourself. You have plenty of options available to modificate gameplay and a lot of object to put on scene. This mode is under improve so some things might not work correctly and sharing online with friends isn’t possible (what i’m working on ☺ ).

Deep Under the Sky

Deep Under the Sky

In the undiscovered recesses of a faraway planet, beautiful and strange organisms live and breathe in a psychedelic Venusian world of dancing lights and metroid-like organisms. Similarly psychedelic to the visual style of the game is the soundtrack, with its equally as trippy and ambient qualities that build up and evolve with each successful move you make.

Deep Under the Sky uses a one-button control system that while incredibly easy to use is surprisingly deep in execution. The objective of each gorgeously organic stage is to fertilize each glowing plant with the debris from the exploded amoeba-like jellyfish that release from the base you control. As simple as that sounds reaching each carefully placed plant and spreading your pieces far enough to fertilize them will be a matter of careful aiming and finesse as you surpass each obstacle and navigate each twist and turn of the maze-like passageways.

Real player with 12.9 hrs in game

The only reason I am not recommending Deep Under the Sky on Steam is due to how poorly it was ported over from a mobile system. It can be played with a single finger on a single button and, when it’s cooperating, the uncomplicated play style is suited to that equally simplistic control scheme. The trajectory of the jellyfish-spore creature is locked from the start of the level and the tools used to alter its path, as well as the order they can be used, are predetermined as well. Despite a small difficulty spike at the end, even getting the optional hidden stars isn’t made to be a challenge. Everything’s so relaxed and smooth that I was inclined to play through the entire game in a single sitting. Furthermore the visual style, though not quite stunning, isn’t as cluttered as some screenshots make it look.
