Even the Ocean
Even the Ocean is an outstanding narrative and platformer with clever puzzles, believable personalities, and quite a long adventure.
- Edit: Probably worth mentioning: It’s of a rare breed of game that can stand on its own merits as a story-driven puzzle-platformer, that also has a message to deliver about society; an existence proof that we can have both, breaking down a dichotomy I’ve seen many people percieve between compelling gameplay and artistic expression in modern games.
I’ve been looking forward to (and following the development of) this game since I played Sean and Joni’s previous game Anodyne, which itself had a wealth of imaginative worlds to explore, each with unique puzzles and atmospheres. Suffice to say, I wasn’t disappointed to find the same wealth of content, crafted with at least as much care and skill as was used in Anodyne. These two clearly know what they’re doing when it comes to game design and development.

Even the Ocean is a 2D adventure platformer at a glance filled with a neat mechanic and no enemies. As I played, I came to realize that there were some deeper elements hidden within the game, including some commentary on modern day society as well.
The game’s primary focus seems to be the story. Like many other games, this one is cliched as well. You play as Aliph, who is new to the big city, and an unsuspecting and unassuming potential hero to save the world, through her skills in mechanics. But as the story develops, you do become attached to the character and the simple interactions on a day to day basis with the people around her, waiting for the next chapter to unfold, or does it? The story is really quite nice, well-written, filled with funny dialogue and social commentary, etc.

OOZI: An Earth Adventure. An evenly paced colourful plat-former, about 5 hours in story mode but provides additional length through challenge stages unlocked by maximizing designated hidden in game tokens. The Steam leader-boards are an exceptional touch. Not in the vein of Super Meat Boy or any other punishing plat-formers, OOZI is a plat-former that you can actually finish and have a pleasant time while doing so.
Difficulty selection ranges from “Kid” to “Hardcore” though the latter just makes the game slightly more challenging. Players are not punished for failure and retuned to checkpoints with previously collected assets intact, which means that for example, discovered secrets persist on restarting checkpoints.

Plokoth

TLDR: Fix the input lag and this game will be a pleasure to play
Unfortunately I can’t say that this one is worth your time. The art is lovely and the levels are good, but the input lag makes the game annoying to play at best. I’d be happy to give this game a proper playthrough once it functions better but at the moment each stage is impossible without retying it many times to work out the exact points that I need to press jump at. This method falls apart on the more complex levels. One other nitpick I have is that there’s no obvious way to close the game :/

Alone In a Dream
The Dream Witch lives in a Dreamworld with her only friend, Mr. Prestone.
One day, darkness comes into the Dreamworld, and they kidnap Mr. Prestone.
She goes through the darkness of the world alone to get Mr. Prestone back.
This game is to manipulate the Dream witch with a light 2D platformer game to drive out the darkness that dominates the stage by going through stages and puzzles.
Am Madness
If you are a fan of either old school platform games (like me - I grew up alongside Manic Miner and Miner 2049er), or just enjoy getting your butt handed to you on a plate, you will appreciate this gem of a game.
The developer was obviously aware that it’s hard (no harder than the old-school platformers were, though), so has thankfully
a) provided an ‘easy’ mode where the you get an extra life each level (up to a certain point in the game) and b) dispensed with the falling damage that made the old games so frustrating.

Am Madness is a somewhat difficult game for me to review. It’s released as a retro revival type game, taking it’s inspiration from ZX Spectrum classics like Jet Set Willy and Manic Miner, intending to capture the spirit of those titles but bring it into the modern age.
The reason that I find it difficult to review, is that I am not of that era of gaming. I don’t have any fond memories of that computer, so when I play a game that is intending to capture the essence of that period of gaming, it doesn’t click with me, I just don’t have the nostalgia.

2021 edit: Beat the game, pretty bizarre ending. If you are interested I highly reccomend struggling through the brutal unfforgiving gameplay to see the ending, its like talking to an alien like a real alien, undocumented. If youve seen the movie Memento i highly reccomend beating this game just for the end. The hardest level is level 2 easily, try and stock up as much AMMO AND HP as you can. Use the torpedos to kill bad guys through walls on that level and mash grenades while looking down n mashing jump on the next area. The rest you can figure out. Im interested in tlaking with the dev if he ever reads this..Awesome ending discussion in HELL

Captain Mayo:
The world known as The Fridge is now at peace after a devastatingly long war between two rival kings: the Mighty Onions of Hein Kingdom, and Johnny Mustard, Ruler of the Province Eggplant. The exhausted Captain Mayo is taking a well-earned break to recharge and powers and his cool and cold cabin. The war took a lot out of him, and he hasn’t been feeling the best lately. In fact, he thought he had food poisoning at one stage. Anyhow, he is resting in order to be fit as a fiddle for his mate, Kenny Ketchup’s, wedding with the beautiful Princess Bea of the Hein Kingdom, when suddenly he hears several pressing knocks at his door. His mate Kenny is beside himself, hot and sweaty (yuck, warm ketchup), speaking fast and full of nonsense. But after cooling down, Kenny Ketchup announces to his mate that the eggplants have taken over the Fridge and Johnny Mustard has kidnapped his beloved Princess Bea! Don’t worry Kenny; I’ll save your Princess because I am Captain Mayo!
