Grimm’s Hollow

Grimm’s Hollow

I hold this game in as high esteem as games such as Undertale and Oneshot.

It would be a mistake to dismiss this game, as I once did.

This game made me really care about it. It’s one of those games where the writing, music, graphics, and gameplay all work together to give life to the characters within it. Even though the setting takes place in a small area (comprising of 2 buildings, 3 caves, and a bake stand), it still feels like an entire world that had a past from before you started playing and a future that unfolds after you stop playing. Every part of the game serves towards this purpose. The developer took the time and effort to make sure every small, nuanced detail felt right. Whether it’s a quirky little animation, the presence (or absence) of circumstance-fitting music, or the sound effects that make every footstep and enemy strike sound just right, this game does a phenomenal job making sure that every contributes an immersive experience. You’re not interacting with a piece of software, you’re interacting with a world.

I’m writing this review after I beat the first boss and had tea with Grimm, so some of my concerns might change as I continue playing.

TL;DR: I really like this game and obviously a lot of effort went into it! It’s fun, it’s cute, could use some Quality Of Life changes

and some balancing, but overall is a good game thusfar! (Likes and Dislikes about the game, as well as bugs are listed below)

Things I liked:

The game’s artstyle is adorable! Everything from the well-written dialogue to the way the characters move, to even their sprites can all be summed up to be cute! 10/10 in terms of the cuteness!

Coloring Pixels

A paint-by-numbers game that is a fantastic way to relax. Unless you get completely addicted to it, like me, and play it WAY too much and your hand starts cramping. :p

Basically, you’re presented with numbered tiles and each number corresponds to a color. Click on that number on the bottom of the screen or type it in on your keyboard and then get to work filling in those squares! The pictures start out easy but progress to large scale ones which will take hours to complete. Your progress is saved when you back out of a puzzle and the game will show you the percentage you have completed. There are also achievements which hopefully will register soon when steam “learns” about the game.

Coloring Pixels

Colouring Pixels reminds me so much of my childhood days of colouring by numbers, I loved doing them in my spare time. I completed many paper version books as a kid, we never had PC’s back in my childhood days. This digital version wont take up so much room, and these pictures look ever so nice once completed.

This game is Super relaxing and VERY addictive once you start, you wont want to stop.

Controls are very easy, Left mouse = select number colour and hold to paint, Middle mouse wheel = scroll picture size, as you will certainly need to. Right mouse = hold and move picture around.

I very highly recommend this game. Not only does it have an entrancing soundtrack and beautiful graphics, it tells a story everyone needs to hear. The way the develoaper collaborated with the refugee to tell his story is honestly awe-inspiring, and this game brought me to tears. Its very emotional and raw, because the story is real. The narration by the refugee in question enhances the story and gameplay tenfold, and also brings something many other games cannot. I hope there is a chapter two, and I just want to thank the developers for making such a great game. The media says video games cause violence, but this one can help stop it. I think if people understand the struggles others face, maybe we wouldn’t fight so much. I don’t know much about the Syrian war, but now I know a bit more. And now I know a face to rally for. No child should have to go what he went through. Its abhorrent, and I can’t imagine being able to survive that. But I am glad he did, and I am glad he shared his story. It’s scary because it’s real, but that’s also why it is so important to play.

Himno

Himno

Another free game I enjoyed so much that I purchased the paid component.

Gameplay is pretty standard platformer fare. Wall jumps, air dashes, ledge hangs. Himno is billed as a relaxing platformer, but there were moments where I uttered the most profane of oaths. The controls take a little getting used to, and even after having spent a few hours playing, I was still plummeting to my watery grave. For the most part it is a fun and peaceful distraction.

No enemies, but the developer is working on a sequel that promises combat, loot drops, crafting and general roguelite attributes. I have wishlisted and followed.

Himno is a well-designed, free-to-play, casual platformer without combat that has an internal level generation system that gives the player an infinite number of levels. There’s not too much in the way of objectives when it comes to this game, as all you do is jump and dash, wall-grab, slide, and jump dash some more. You can look at the 11 very doable Steam achievements as your goal. (Took me about 2.5 hours to do everything necessary to get them.)

Wow…that was short….

Super Blue Boy Planet is a very short game about a typical hero rescuing his typical girlfriend/wife from a typical villain…who happens to be an alien race completely consisted of CommanderVideo. How short is this game? To be perfectly honest, less than half an hour. It took me 24 minutes from start to finish.

That said, it’s easy with few areas that require precise timing…and other areas where you can expect to die. Don’t let deaths discourage you, there’s normally no penalty for dying since enemies stay dead when you revive at a checkpoint. Do keep in mind that a boss will recover its entire health should you lose a single hitpoint.

Missing Translation

Missing Translation

Please don’t be mislead by the “Missing Translation” orange-box warning, “English language not supported.” Actually, the only language in the game is apparently the language of a race from an alien world, so no problem. From the Store Page, “REPEAT, NO TEXT. Everyone can enjoy it regardless of the language they speak :D”, and “No tutorials, hints or even text to be found here. This wasn’t made to increase difficulty but to let the player do everything on his own, “Missing Translation” isn’t a hard game, but we don’t like hand-holding.” BUT, achievements are included, and ARE in English (as suitable.)

tl;dr: Short and sweet, an intriguing little free puzzler for people with a passing interest in codes and secret languages, perfect to spend your coffee hour with.

As a rule, it seems that in games when you fall asleep you see much more interesting dreams than I usually do. This time you wake up in a world that apparently can only speak through the android lock screen’s nine node patterns. Thankfully, you are clearly an aspiring linguistic with a passing interest in decoding signs and deciphering cryptic langauges, so you bravely forge ahead in this new pixel-arty world to discover the dozen or so words you have time to decipher before the sun comes up in the morning and starts getting in your eyes.

Aberoth

Aberoth

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result.”

Aberoth is what I like to describe as a hardcore PVP “grind” type of MMO, where your “results” are not guaranteed to come to fruition, or even acknowledged. Your very presence matters in this game, with a limited number of realms to house players in, you become a contender of resources, whether you are a new player or very seasoned at that- as this is what this game is- a game of containers and resources, where every mob and every instance of a possible resource being contested at any given moment.

Real player with 4168.4 hrs in game

WOW. The Steam Community completely failed this game. This is the reason these games don’t exist - you try to make a game that does new things, and the gamers flood in, play for 10 minutes, then stamp a negative review on a game they shouldn’t have been playing anyway. Why would you play a game you’re conceptually opposed to, and not willing to learn? You were told from the start that this game has open PvP and stiff penalty for death. If you can’t stomach that, why are you here? That’s a freaking core game mechanic! Why kill progress for a niche group who desperately wants something like this to grow? At least 90% of the games out there are happy to cater to your childish mentality, where death means nothing more than a free teleport back to town and fully restored health.

Hunger Dungeon

Hunger Dungeon

TL;DR: Test the game, be fair with it. It’s a MOBA, it’s fun. Don’t mind the graphics and all that stuff. If you’re reading the TL;DR you probably don’t have that much time and SHOULD BE TRYING/PLAYING THE GAME!

First of all, Hunger Dungeon is a MOBA(A.K.A Multiplayer Online Battle Arena). In this game, you (normally) fight 3 opponents in an arena. You have to kill your opponents in various rounds until you reach the final round, where you have to collect energy cristals to escape the dungeon, while you try to survive hunger, buy scrolls and fight the other players. There’s also team deathmatch, that’s exactly the same team, but at most it’s 3v3. And lastly Dragon Mode, where 4 players fight together to defeat 3 Dragons and get their scrolls.

Real player with 54.7 hrs in game

Very fun fast paced battles, no two heroes play the same.

Easy to play, hard to master.

The amount of build options availible is amazing. You earn gold during rounds, and between rounds you can buy spell scrolls and equipment. Each hero has an activated ability, and 1-4 passives. Most heros have 3 spell scroll slots, and 2 equipment slots. Making for quite a few friendship breaking combos.

The only cons i have found myself so far besides a couple to expect bugs, and it not having quickmatch system, Is that some of the game mechanics are not fully explained, so i find myself giving tips to others almost every game. ^_^

Artists Of Fortune: Distant Worlds

A very chill game, in the coloring pixels by numbers/letters form. Similar to the very popular coloring pixels & coloring game franchises, with a unique art style which relies on science fiction and cyberpunk representations.

Very nice pics and animations, plays better with your own music and at your own pace. Very engaging and addictive, can keep you for tens of hours stuck on the monitor. Totally recommended (bought the DLC’s!).

I love the game. Very slick presentation, and a nice range of ‘space’ type pictures to fill in. Sure hope they bring out more planets on a regular basis. Excellent game. 9.5/10

Bit Heroes

Bit Heroes

I believe I played this game for enough time to make this review. Add another 2000+ hours I played on phone/Kongregate before Steam version was even a thing. Let’s begin.

First of all, let’s start from pros:

-Pretty regular game updates, big game update every 6~ months.

-Some folks in the community are pretty good people

Sadly, that’s all I can came up with after playing this for 3+ years.

Now the cons:

-Even though updates are pretty frequent, nothing really changes. New gear, depending on what you want to build into you just get it or uptier your previous gear. Any of this requires a lot of grind and money.

My Review After 8 Months of Bit Heroes

Intro

Bit Heroes is a cross-platform free to play grindfest game. If you don’t like game that require you to do the same task over and over again, this game is not for you. If you are the type to get upset because RNG isn’t in your favor, again, this game is not for you. This game is energy based rpg where you can log into the same account across different devices to pick up where you left off before leaving for work in the morning. There are updates at least every Friday, sometimes we get spoiled with a suprise update mid week. In this game, you venture through quests. These quests have floors where you must complete without the help of friends, but with your own famailiars. Every monster you fight in-game has a potential to “think you’re cool” and you have a choice to bribe them with gems, or persuade them with coins. Don’t get too caught up on gems though because you get enough through normal gameplay in order to unlock shop-exclusive items such as special pets and accessories. There are also dungeons on the quest map, these are harder than floors if just using your familiars, but you’re actually allowed to bring any of your friend’s characters into the dungeon with you and control them for yourself. You’ll see what I mean if you download the game.
