Rivals of Aether

Rivals of Aether

The best platform figther in the business next only to Melee. Crazy movement and mechanics with a low enough skill floor for newcomers and an insane skill ceilling that seems to only get higher the further the meta goes on.

This is probably one of my favorite Smash clones out of all of them for now. Not only is the game play, the crossovers, and content, but for the encouragement for workshop support. Modding is one of the main reasons why people even play SSB Brawl still, and for good reason. More content, unexpected characters to play as, and more variety.

Ever since workshop has released during beta and since the making of this review, 5000+ creations ranging from new characters, stages, and more have been released, slowly and surely improving as time progresses. Not only that, but workshop is very optimized for categorizing different characters per series or creator and how it loads them up to not overfill the game.

A different take on the “platform fighter” genre.

For most games in the platform fighter genre, they aim to do what Super Smash Bros. does but in varying but ultimately minimal degree. The dodge, respawn, or ledge mechanics may change, but they all still abide by the laws of the main smash games with combo, tilts, smash attacks, specials, and aerials. Indie Pogo is built in a different way.

The main goal of Indie Pogo was an idea of your character constantly jumping, which sounds terrible in a traditional platform fighting which has walking, running, short hops, and full hops, but Indie Pogo simplifies in some areas but complexes some other areas to make a potential annoying mechanic rather fluid and fun.

Simple yet has some complexity to it. It has forced auto jumping but it actually works quite nicely to the flow of gameplay since you’re always in motion.

There are only four moves and a super move for each character, a n-air, u-air, d-air, and grounded charge attack. By performing combos and landing on the ground you recieve gems which allow you to do your super move. You need 5 gems to perform one and the the bigger the combo the more gems you will get.

There are 10 stages and 14 characters in total so far but the game will be getting updates with free dlc including stages, characters, trophies, skins, and modes in the future.

Pocket Bravery

Pocket Bravery

Pocket Bravery is inspired by classics from the 90s, such as Street Fighter, Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters. And its SD aesthetic had an influence on games like Pocket Fighter and other fighting games from Neo Geo Pocket Color.

But make no mistake, Pocket Bravery was created to be a new and unique fighting game, with original characters, vibrant colors and a combat system that will impress you, since the game was designed with the focus on high level players. Even so, it has features that will teach beginning players how to develop and evolve in the game.

The game uses the digital pad and four buttons, two for punches and two for kicks. You can execute the traditional commands from the fighting games using the directional pad plus the button to make special moves, super specials or even the final attack. Each character has an element that represents his strength, can be physical or supernatural. You can accumulate up to 2 attacks on the elemental bar. Through this system, it is possible to execute elemental attacks that have different characteristics from the others and bring new offensive or defensive possibilities for the player.

CLASH! - Battle Arena

I love this game. No stupid 360 degree dpad moves just simple fighting. I love how this game wasn’t over thought with the knocking people off platform garbage. Solid game. The pace of the game is perfect and the graphics serve it well. It’s like a super improved version of the nes classic karate champ. Good Job!!!

This is 2d pixellated simplistic sword fighting done right. Not a whole lot of content with only four characters, but the feel of the combat is spot on and makes me want to keep playing just one more fight.

Had a great time playing this with friends.

The controller support is really rough around the edges though and it’s difficult getting different controllers to work.

Roof Rage

Roof Rage

After 240+ hours of playtime and 2 years worth of interacting with the community, I feel justified in making a more in-depth review of a game I hold close to my heart.

Roof Rage is a platform fighter with a goal of meshing mechanics from both platform fighting games (Rivals of Aether, Super Smash Bros.) with mechanics of more traditional 2D fighting games, such as a health bar replacing the usual percent meter, motion inputs on some characters, and some homages to classic Street Fighter characters like Ryu and E Honda. Aesthetically, it takes inspiration from arcade fighting games, with over the top presentation and music using pixelated sprites, an amazing chiptune OST, and the classic setting of “The Greatest Fighters In The World”. From a visual and aesthetic standpoint, Roof Rage knocks it out of the park.

Excellent game with very unique mechanics that set it apart from the rest of the platform fighters out there. Smooth, crisp sprite work and momentum-focused combat that makes everything feel satisfying.

If I had to pick between all the platform fighters out there, Roof Rage would be a very close contender for #1.

  • The mix of HP and knockback based on remaining life is a very nice touch.

  • Combos feel consistent and effective, while still allowing proper DI mixups to escape them.

  • Momentum being a core element in EVERY attack in the game makes every attack and movement satisfying. All moves serve multiple purposes- ranging from spacing, movement, recovery and combo tool.

Super GMA

Super GMA

So. I adore indie games. By far my favorite genre. And while I can get into some of the more main stream titles out there, there’s nothing quite like playing a game that a small group of people, if not just one person, pours their heart into.

Super GMA is an 8-bit fighting game with 8 characters to choose from. And that could have been all that was put into it, but it isn’t. Each character gets their own unique backstory in the campaign and once you beat it, you get to see the resolve to their story. Everything that you see and hear during the game was done by one person and that is where this game gets it’s charm. Great music, with an interesting twist on fighting games where once you hit the enemy, you gain a bit of health back. Nice fair fighting. I have yet to play the local multiplayer but I look forward to doing so.

THE LAST BLADE 2

THE LAST BLADE 2

This is a well-established and underrated classic that has received top notch emulation, and as of late, netcode. The game itself has a wide cast of very diverse characters, all of which have very well delivered hints towards rather deep character arcs. The art is all beautiful, and the music is very memorable. The actual in-game mechanics are also quite deep but very accessible, you could reasonably pick this game up in a dozen hours and be able to get some enjoyment out of any given player matchup. Neutral is very footsie heavy and most characters gain access to some very strong tools for creative and explosive pressure. The combos are mostly fairly short with a moderate amount of damage, however there are plenty of advanced combos utilizing very advanced mechanics for lab monsters to sink their teeth into. The main attribute that makes this game so unique are the different stances, very akin to Melty Blood moons. Without going into too much detail, there’s power stance to reward solid neutral and forcing favorable trades, speed which enables very elaborate blockstrings for any given character, and EX which more or less combines the two in exchange for a steep defense penalty.

Code Mystics has once again worked their signature black magic on another excellent title.

TL;DR: gorgeous weapon fighter with flawless rollback netcode and none of the crappy emulation that plagued the previous version on Steam.

This game is excellent; deep, stylish, wacky, and an immense amount of fun. This is the best version of the game, and literally the only downside is the lack of lobbies to spectate in (which means you’ll need to play on another platform such as RedGGPO/Fightcade for online tournament purposes).
