Naval Action

I have almost 6k hours and belong to a wonderful and very successful community in the game. I actively played and tested almost all content in the game. You can assume that I might know what I am talking about.

I am fan of historical simulation war games. Enjoying Totalwar series for years and particularly attracted to age of sail games thanks to Pirate of Burning Sea. Naval Action is the only successor in the market for this genre now. That is the main reason I had big hopes and enthusiasm toward the game and still playing till another come, mainly sticking with my friends.

As much as I would love to see a game like this succeed, I must recommend that you avoid spending money on this game right now. If you are interested, I suggest you wait till it releases and watch the reviews then. Let me explain why.

I have many more hours in this game then is posted in my steam information. I was a closed alpha, pre steam, tester. At the time their was a small group of Russian or Euro testers that numbered, less than 50 as far as I can tell. The second batch of testers, another 50ish, included many Americans. I was one of those testers. I believe that was in early 2014 or 2015. Either way, I have been involved in this game from closed alpha, to early access, to sea trials, to open world going on years now.

the two words that describe a game like this are: DIGITAL HEROIN. the game is weirdly addictive but i will never recommend it to anyone as much of the time you are just staring at the screen for 3 hours while the boat moves- cant look away for even 15 seconds because a bunch of enemy ships may just appear in view in front of you, requiring 3 seconds of reaction time to steer out of the way, or else you lose tens-of-hours of work.. that’s fine for immersion, albeit a tad harsh, but the reason this is a negative review is such that the product is filled with bugs and spelling mistakes that have been present since game launch. new updates often re-break old features that were previously fixed on a repeated basis (sextant buff/autopilot.. coordinate space transforms arent that hard guys!). utter and complete world wipes happen upon developers' whim, so if you get into the game late in a season then you may as well not play because you will be so far behind the career players who got in 10seconds after new season and claimed every island and covered them with fence foundations so that nobody can build. and by the time you learn the game then the entire world undergoes another wipe which results in making game harder to suppress the PVP veterans; leaving anyone new to the PVE game in the dust. long story short: developers are struggling to tame their existing playerbase with no remaining capability to improve the game for the general public. its been almost 3 years since public release for paid product.. they cant claim “early access” anymore.

This is the worst best game ever….

It’s pretty, it’s fun to play* and with a private community to avoid the toxic levels build up over the years from the wrongdoing of the devs, amazing and fun.

It is… however… full of bugs, without any sight of those ever being fixed. Arrogant devs who refuse to help people who are trying to improve on the game with mods and who ignore all feedback. No, all… feedback is ignored. They deploy enthusiasts to run their discords and take all the heat while hiding in the corner.

After a long, long time playing this game, as you can see by my hours played. I have one thing to say about this game.

Trion ruined a completely awesome game. This game had everything that you could want from an MMO. Pretty good graphics made on Cryengine, an entire world including the ocean built from the ground up. Deep Sea diving for treasure hunting, massive ship battles, player built housing and even vehicles like tractors and boats ranging from rowboats, to fishing boats and trade boats, to outright galleons entire parties could crew.

Oh Archeage…Where do I begin…

Edit: this review was based off of the Kraken server (Used to be Enla) which was a merge of two different servers, from the start of Kraken everything went wrong and that is where most of my cons come from. If someone comments just be aware that their experience may not be the same due to being on a server with more stability. This was not just my view on the game but an overall assessment made by a guild of over 40 people. and a close estimate of population would be a 1:1:3 Haranyan (us) : Pirate (Purple and same faction reds) : Nuian (Red), so we were completely out numbered when it came to world PvP and trade runs.

Uncharted Waters Online

Uncharted Waters Online

TL;DR: Uncharted Waters Online: a very difficult game with countless opportunities that will keep you shackled to your screen for hours on end.

It had been a while since I first tried this game with a steep (and I mean Steep with a capital S) learning curve, so a few weeks ago I reinstalled it, saw that my character, hardly advanced at anything, was still available so I figured I would start where I had left off.

That may have been a mistake, because apart from remembering how to move my character and how to get to my ship, I had no idea what I was doing. Starting from zero after having finished the tutorial… Bad choice.

I should make it clear I’m not recommending supporting this game monetarily, I would suggest you don’t buy anything from the cash shop, what I encourage players to do is give it a try and play without spending money, especially if you have some friends to bring in.

TL;DR PROS/CONS version:

PROS:

  • Unique MMORPG that focuses on 3 types of playstyles: adventure, merchant, battle (maritime).

  • Freedom to choose what skills you want, and focus on whatever combo of playstyles you prefer.

I stumbled upon this game while taking a look through early access titles. The first thing that caught my eye was that it is survival. The second thing that really peaked my curiosity was spiri animals. What, are you kidding me?! Who does that?! How could that work?! Well, let me tell you, I was immediately engrossed in the visually pleasing artistry and placement of all the points of interest giving it a realistic feel which we all try to find in these MMO’s. You can roam this huge map for hours and you’ll see something new every time. There is always something to do as in any survival game, it’s hard not to get distracted! Weather you like solo play or group play, pvp or pve, exploring or building, this is the game for you! The Developers are always interactive and enjoy playing right along side even the newbies so you don’t need to be a high lvl to be noticed! Now, with that said, I won’t go into obvious details which every new game, especially early access, about what I don’t like about Spirit Animal Survival because negatives are to be expected and my likes, or loves rather, outweigh the things that are still being worked on. It is, after all, a work in progress. Look, all I’m trying to say is, stop reading this already and come in, enjoy some great company with friendly people and have some fun! If you’re waiting for the invite, well, this is it! Don’t hesitate, I hear the sale price will be ending soon! Also wanted to add, if you’re concerned with the minimum requirements, I know it says min i5, I’m running an i3 with the only real issues being in the loading and shutting down, the game play is practically flawless! Don’t let that be what scared you away, let it be that big bad T-Rex that one shot you!

Before I write my thoughts, I saw someone post false information that I’d like to correct. You actually CAN report bugs without having to use a 3rd party chat software called Discord. There is a big box in the main menu (as seen in one of the videos above) that clearly states you can report bugs by contacting them via their email at support@spiritanimalsurvival.com - if the forum or Discord is not your way to go, there is always that solution for you.

Now on to my actual thoughts of this game in its current state! Spirit Animal Survival (SAS) is another survival game with some unique elements in it. The features you expect in a survival game are there, you need to go get resources, craft and build, while trying to stay alive by eating, drinking and not letting others/animals kill you. You got to do a bit of grinding but that’s part of the games in this genre. The most unique feature of the game is that you can transform/morph into a spirit animal. There is a bunch of them and all of them have their own attacks/features. This does set the game apart from other survival games that I have played. You can see how this work in the videos above.

Windward

Windward

The gameplay dynamic in Windward goes from calm, controlled and thoughtful (if you’re looking for trade routes and quests to build up your towns), to outright mayhem and sudden and repeated death (if you’ve ventured into a tough pirate region, or a combat instance).

These are some basic facts to know, if you’re considering a purchase:

The game begins with creation of a World, somewhat under the control of the creator, in terms of its shape, the challenges it will present, and some other global features. The world consists of a large number of rectangular regions, each of which contains a procedurally generated terrain and oceans, with a few coastal towns scattered in each. The next decision is to choose your starting faction. There are several Windward factions, all of which are allies by default, and each comes with a different set of advantages and drawbacks, which are described to you when you’re asked to choose: maybe you want to get rich as an Exchange captain, or rampage the seas wiping out pirates with Valiant, or … the choices are yours.

Over all, I do enjoy this game in small doses. The Pirate genre is sadly under-served in video games. I’ve played a few from Sid Meier’s Pirates (which I loved, for the most part), Assassin’s Creed 4 (which is beautiful and interesting, but needs more sailing) to New Horizons 2 (which is for me the absolute gold standard for pirate games.) Windward isn’t as good as those guys. At all. You could forgive Black Flag for not having a robust trading system since it is an action game. You can forgive Sid Meier’s Pirates for not having a developed 3rd or 1st person character action since its focus is on piraty things. You can forgive Uncharted Waters 2 for not having beautiful graphics because of its age. But they all offer something special. Windward doesn’t have a robust trade system so at least it has what the other games have, right? Well, no, the graphics are pretty average. Graphics aren’t everything, at least you can develop your avatar through some sort of story or purpose. Except… you don’t really have an avatar. In fact, there’s no story at all. In fact, the premise is not even “here’s a boat, go and do as you see fit”, it’s more of a sentence fragment of “boat”. Ok, fine. Boat it is.
