Naval Action

I have almost 6k hours and belong to a wonderful and very successful community in the game. I actively played and tested almost all content in the game. You can assume that I might know what I am talking about.

I am fan of historical simulation war games. Enjoying Totalwar series for years and particularly attracted to age of sail games thanks to Pirate of Burning Sea. Naval Action is the only successor in the market for this genre now. That is the main reason I had big hopes and enthusiasm toward the game and still playing till another come, mainly sticking with my friends.

As much as I would love to see a game like this succeed, I must recommend that you avoid spending money on this game right now. If you are interested, I suggest you wait till it releases and watch the reviews then. Let me explain why.

I have many more hours in this game then is posted in my steam information. I was a closed alpha, pre steam, tester. At the time their was a small group of Russian or Euro testers that numbered, less than 50 as far as I can tell. The second batch of testers, another 50ish, included many Americans. I was one of those testers. I believe that was in early 2014 or 2015. Either way, I have been involved in this game from closed alpha, to early access, to sea trials, to open world going on years now.

Pirates Outlaws

Pirates Outlaws

Pirates Outlaws is a roguelite deckbuilder where the player is the captain of a pirate ship in search of fame and fortune, and must fight against Human pirates, skeletons, ghosts and monsters. The game mechanics will be very familiar to anyone who played other games in the genre such as Slay The Spire or Neoverse, although of course Pirates Outlaws has its own unique twists.

Combat Mechanics

Combat is turn based, with the player’s actions being represented by the cards drawn into their hand, and you’ll see what action each enemy intends to take on their turn. Melee attacks can only target the enemy closest to the player (unless the card says it damages all enemies) but are usually free to play. Ranged attacks can target any enemy but they cost ammo to play. Other cards can give the player armour (which can be carried forward to the next turn), restore health, apply status effects to the player or enemies, change the position of an enemy, or have other special effects.

This game looks and plays like a pirate skinned Slay the Spire, and well, that is pretty accurate and not a bad thing either. It does mold and craft its own unique image in both the style and gameplay. Some of the game design choices would actually make me think it is more of an Anti-Slay-the-Spire at times as it makes deliberate design decisions to stray from the path of its inspiration.

While you can craft some pretty OP builds still, it can be a lot harder to achieve some of the broken builds of stacking poison to 999 or such - largely because the status system in this pirate game is quite different. Only one status is allowed to be active at a time. So if your enemy is poisoned, they can wipe their poison stacks clean by buffing their self with an attack increase. Because buffs can erase debuffs and vice versa. However, this goes for the player too. There is even a boss battle that will absolutely wipe the floor with you if you don’t have some kind of way to buff yourself. He will keep raising your injury (this game’s version of poison) stacks on you and they will just get higher and higher unless you wipe it with a buff. Not much different than how Slay the Spire bosses can hard counter some of your decks. But at the same time it is just different and feels unique. I wasn’t so sure about the status system at first but it grown on me quite a bit. Which I think brings me to the next major difference.

This is a very short game. Beat it in half an hour. I generally enjoy these cheap indie platformers cos they’re mostly fun. This one was fun, but I think it’s still a bit rough around the edges. I’m not sure I understand the physics of this game. Controlling it takes a lot of getting used to. I think there is a lot of room for improvement, including, but not limited to, something as simple as making the cannons sound louder than the music (which can get a bit annoying at times) so that you can know when they fire if they are out of your sight. Also, dying just makes the character vanish, I think the “death” sprite could be just a little bit longer. But, overall, as I said, the game was fun, with nice pixel graphics and its fair amount of challenges, so I would still give it the thumbs up. Be warned tho, if you’re better at platforming than I am (which I’m sure is not too difficult), you will definitely beat the game considerably faster, and, to be honest, I don’t see much replay value here.

Don’t overlook this curious little gem of a game! Do yourself a favor and give it a try. I’ve never played anything quite like it.

As an added bonus the developer is very active and present, and has already provided several bug fixes and added improvements.

Edit 16th of October:

An earlier version of this review mentioned that the game needed some serious rebalancing, as it was very difficult to keep going for any significant amount of watches. The developer has since changed a number of things, and it is now much, much easier to progress in my experience.

This game is truly charming.

It has got style and character and a great atmosphere (it does not struggle to create a feel-good one).

You gotta love the music, absolutely enjoyable and this goes for most everything of this game.

It also has very good achievements that are desirable but seldomly quick to get.

They let you know there is more adventure for you in this game sort of in addition to the already

solid watch to watch “routine” of being the quartermaster.

Make smart decisions (one of them is not to think “1 portion” ought to be enough when there is no better reason to skimp there other than saving a few coins when that is not crucial) and you can sail a fearsome, capable pirate ship you will mourn to ever lose. This might even entail mourning the loss of your former captain (I admit that happened to me ;-) ).

Tempest: Pirate Action RPG

Tempest: Pirate Action RPG

Q: Why is being a pirate so addictive?

A: Because when ye lose yer hand, ye get hooked!

‘Tempest: Pirate Action’ takes us to a timescape where the tantalizing tall tales of tanalised tallship tars turn true! This is one of my favourite PC games to date, along with ‘The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt’ and ‘Naval Action’. That’s partly because I love square-rigger sailing ships and 1700s maritime history and lore. Of these three games, I consider Tempest the most imaginitive and atmospheric.

This open world game is much better than I expected, based on the YouTube reviews. Various aspects of the game have been much improved since those reviews were posted. The ship-capturing boarding action, for example, is now vastly better, with fully mobile, realistic fighting characters, one of which, you fully control, so you can take part in the melee, close and personal, from a 3rd-person perspecive. That’s something that neither ‘Naval Action’ nor ‘The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt’ can boast.

Score : 55-60/100

Unfortunately it is ““NOT”” a full pirates game.

If you’re looking for a real pirates game this one will disappointed you.

Good points:

  • Graphic is acceptable

-Ship easy upgrade

-Some of the special items were good designed

-Ship fighting is ok ( Only to those who just enjoy firing cannon balls )

-Auto picking up design

-Time speed up design

Weak points :

***One of the greatest weak point is : this game have “NO” save and worst of all …….there’re traps that didn’t looks like a trap that we will lost 1/4 or even 1/2 of our most experience crews without warning !!!!! 0 . Though we can still play the game without a save file.

Quirky Tower Defence, where the difficulty ramps up quite quickly. Some bugs, but the dev’s are working hard to iron them out. Remember to report any you find, rather than just grumbling about it

Balance issues really quick. You don’t make near the money needed to get needed number of towers and upgrades needed. Each tower you buy increases in cost - i.e. 1st is 25, 31, 39 etc so after you place 6 you are paying TONS and monsters drop 5 or 6 on a kill - but unless you spend that on upgrading existing - you don’t stand a chance.

1st 3 levels were good / challenging. The 4th is frustrating as you have to tower 2 paths and you have crap for money. You can barely keep up by upgrading your existing towers let alone place new ones on a 2nd path that are 90+ each.

Scallywag’s Honor

THE LAST STAND

The Caribbean Sea, your sea, has been the home of true freedom for ages. Calico Jack, William Kidd, and many other great pirates had sailed these waters in the past.

Now the heroes are gone. Hanged, burned and killed in battles against navies of Spain, France, and the United States. Colonial powers began to control the water and ravage the lands without any regards to people and their history. The true free world and the pirates almost vanished. The last few insignificant islands are waiting to be smashed by the unstoppable colonial foot.

But what would happen if SOMEONE would unite them? If a legendary captain would arise once again? Can the free world be saved and the history was rewritten?

SAIL THE MOST FRIGHTENING SHIP IN CORSAIR HISTORY

Directly control your ship. The most frightening vessel in history. The ones who had seen him claim it has supernatural powers can summon sea beasts and storms on his demand.

DEFEND THE ISLANDS FOR DAYS

Each defense lasts for 3 days. Better win territory, gather resources and set up your buildings during the first two days because on the last one the mighty colonial armada will arrive!

UNITE THE FREE FLEET

You are not alone. All the pirates on the island want to help you. Key to victory is to tactically summon proper helper ships and fighters on the proper time. Or maybe you want to save the resources for building or next days? You decide.

REBUILD THE DEFENCES

After winning back some land you can decide to spend resources on defensive structures or to push forward and invest in the fleet. Structures stay with you forever. Fleet helps only during the current day.

UPGRADE YOUR SHIPS AND STRUCTURES ALONG THE CAMPAIGN

No matter what style of gameplay you fancy there is always something to upgrade or improve for the next battles. Will you invest in strong towers? Maybe the fleet? Or is it time to boost your own ship?

Flinthook

Flinthook

Flinthook is a platformer with roguelite elements that reminds me a lot of the rosy coloured arcades from a long time ago. From minute 1, the game’s pixelated world screams of a time when you needed quarters to keep going, to try again. Gorgeous artwork and fun, action packed music help to push you onwards through one ship after another.

Why chase through ships though? Is it loot? Story? a combination of the two? The narrative backbone exists, and it does try to create a cohesive experience. You’re hunting down pirates all over the galaxy to rescue little ghosts that might or might not have something to do with Captain Flinthook, the pirate you play as. This loose, simple narrative doesn’t get much deeper, but that’s fine. The point of the game is not a narrative one; the goal is to have a mechanically sound game.

One important caveat: PLAY THIS GAME WITH AN XBOX CONTROLLER AND USE THE DEFAULT CONTROL SCHEME (i.e. not pro). When you use a controller, the game cuts you a lot of slack in the sense that if you’re pointing toward a hookable object, the game auto-corrects a bit and is like “I get what you want to do buddy so here you go :)”. If you use a mouse to hook stuff, that slack is GONE. You have to be veeeeeeeeery precise when you want to hook stuff to the point of frustration. The pro scheme is exactly what it says: for pros. I would definitely NOT recommend starting out with this controller scheme because while it gives you more options since you use the right stick to shoot….. It’s just harder. Like a lot harder. So in order to maximize fun, deeeeeefinitely recommend to use the default controller scheme on an Xbox controller.
