Flynn and Freckles

Flynn and Freckles

| Byte-sized review | A platform adventure best left marooned on a deep sea ocean island |

| Review | I adore 2D/3D colourful platformers (next to RPG’s it’s my second favorite genre). In fact some of my favorite gaming memories consist of myself huddling around the NES, SEGA Mega Drive, Playstation 1 and 2 playing through each systems latest colourful platformer, often staying up into the wee hours of the morning getting lost in each ones world. While the genre has fallen out of favor somewhat unfortunately with the big publishers thankfully we have indie game studios trying to rekindle the flame and through that we have seen a popular resurgence with 2D 8/16 bit adventures such as Shovel Knight and The Messenger and in the 3D realm with the brilliant A Hat in Time to the mediocre and somewhat disappointing Yooka-Laylee (disappointing considering the talent behind this one) to even Crash Bandicoot making an appearance on modern systems with the well received Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy. The moment I saw Flynn and Freckles pop up on the Steam store I knew I immediately had to give it a try. Sadly, and really it pains me to do this because I can see the developers clearly have the same love for the genre as I do even citing Spyro, Guybrush and Crash in the credits as inspiration for the game, I just can’t recommend this game. While the PS2 aesthetics didn’t bother me in the slightest (I found the graphics quite charming in a simple way) what is unfortunate is how bland and unremarkable the adventure is. Had this released in the early noughties it would probably have gone completely unnoticed as well and while it tries to pay homage to the era it does nothing to make it stand out. Coupled with terrible animations (Flynn walks like he has a carrot stuck up his backside) and a dull-as-dishwater plot (young pirate searches for the treasure of one fabled pirate), I could have probably gotten over those issues and simply given the game a “meh” rating if it were not for the one mechanic that simply ruins it all, a mechanic you need to absolutely nail in a platform adventure, you know - the jumping bits. Jumping bits that require precision but that are totally broken. I spend more time dying and getting frustrated with the jumping, especially since the game is quite puzzle heavy (nothing taxing), but often requires that the jumping mechanic actually works, which it doesn’t. Lots of trial and error ensured much to my chagrin. The second major issue I have with this game is that it only saves periodically but not enough (mostly only when you enter a new area) and should you die (and you will thanks to the broken jumping mechanic) you are often forced to replay through large sections, having to resolve puzzles you just solved (and often struggled to solve because of the jumping mechanic working against you). This ultimately ends up sinking this adventure. |

TL;DR - it’s busted on a fundamental level. Due to serious collision detection problems, your character freezes on landing from a jump, or falls through the platform, or fails to jump. The level design does not account for this. I did not finish the game because my save file has permanently preserved or not preserved the state of various level elements in such a way that it can’t be completed anymore, with no option to restart the level. Do not buy this game.

The game has crippling problems with collision detection, even with recognizing whether you have landed from a jump, and so you can receive fall damage from a relatively small fall. The collision detection problems also make your character come to a dead stop for like a fifth of a second on landing, and make you simply slide off some platforms without jumping, or fall through solid platforms when falling fast enough.

Shores of Plunder

Shores of Plunder

ABOUT

Shores of Plunder is a fast-paced party game where you and up to 3 of your mateys can battle, race and plunder as much booty as you can before the clock runs out. After each round you will return to your pirate ship where you can hang out and enjoy pirate-themed shenanigans.

GAMEPLAY

The matches are fast, fun and full of classic pirate shenanigans. While some players may want to collect as much treasure as they can, as fast as they can, others may want to pirate their way through it by knocking coins out of their opponents in cutlass swinging sword fights, flintlock blasting gun battles, sneaky explosive blasts from powder kegs, and other devious tactics. Many of the combat mechanics are still under development and will be added throughout Early Access with player feedback taken in to mind.

MULTIPLAYER

Shores of Plunder is all about having good old fashioned pirate themed fun whether you want to play solo or with your friends, family and colleagues. The online gameplay will be focused around an invite-only style of matchmaking so that players can enjoy a social online experience within a safe environment. Throughout Early Access new and improved lobby and matchmaking features will be added and adjusted with player feedback taken in to account.

MORE PIRATES!

As the game develops through Early Access there will eventually be are many pirates to choose from, including famous pirates from history. Each of these pirates will come with the ability to select a unique special skill that has a limited number of uses.

Designing your own custom tailored pirate will be a big part of Shores of Plunder and one of the biggest features that will be developed throughout Early Access is giving players the ability to customize everything from the hat they wear right down to whether or not they want to walk on a peg leg. Players will also be able to cash in the coins they earned to buy additional cosmetic items. The player customization and cosmetic store is currently unavailable but will be developed and adjusted throughout Early Access with player feedback taken in to account.

I NEED SOME RUM!

Pirates will do just about anything for a bottle of rum and once yours runs out of their special skill they will refuse to do it again until they’ve had some more rum. Replenish the skills by finding one of the many bottles of rum that are stashed around the island and drink it back. The player will have to take caution because while drinking rum refills the skills, it will also trigger a temporary drunkenness effect which renders the pirate vulnerable to attacks from any nearby players as they stumble around recklessly.

SOCIAL

Between matches the pirates will be returned to the deck of ship where they can socialize, brawl and have fun. Once the players are ready for another match they simply hop in to a cannon to trigger the countdown timer which will blast the players to shore.

Throughout Early Access new social features will be added such as playing music, drinking rum, gamble their coins away with mini games and more.

VR Pirates of the Caribbean Life Experience

VR Pirates of the Caribbean Life Experience

‘VR Pirates of the Caribbean Life Experience’ is a small collection of weird scenes, with an ever-so-slight connection to water. In fact, apart from them all featuring water in some way they are not linked in any way. They are not fun, they are not educational, not interesting and they are not relaxing. Once again this developer hammers a nail into PCVR’s death with yet another app that makes it looks pointless. To say I don’t recommend this (or anything this developer makes) would be an understatement. Oh, and all the text was in Chinese anyway. I think it just goes to show an Oxford education isn’t worth shit.

Information / Review English

Pirate Island is a 3D side-scrolling shooter with platform elements, which was developed by ImperiumGame.

Gameplay / Story

The Story briefly told:

A nameless hero tries to free his wife from the clutches of evil pirates / skeletons, who was brought back to life by an ancient force through Voodoo-Mgaie. Armed only with a saber / musket this seems impossible, but you love your wife so much that you still try everything possible to get her back in your hands and free her from the clutches of evil. You move on the sections from left to right or back again, your entire adventure will be accompanied by wonderful pieces of music that change again and again and are suitable for this era. The combat system is kept simple. You hit your opponents, evade backwards / forwards or fight them in long-range combat. After defeating them, they usually drop an item that can be useful to you, such as gold etc.

Space Captain McCallery - Episode 1: Crash Landing

Space Captain McCallery - Episode 1: Crash Landing

Lovely sci-fi short story with fun and weird low-poly-art (if pixel-art can be a genre…), simple shooting, platforming and exploration. The best idea of the game is to take the collectathon pickups and make them not only useful but strategic: fruits and mushrooms heal, provide energy for movement and charge the weapon. Also some cause hallucinations, which makes the already kinda trippy game even better looking. Enemies are basic but not boring goofy/creepy aliens, nicely mixed with enviromental challanges (mostly falling). I enjoyed the ideas and the atmosphere and appreciate the dev fixing some minor bugs and even implementing suggestions only hours after I mentioned them. Waiting for the next game.

I’m not sure whether it’s the semi-linear storyline, the third-person player view, or the eating mechanic, but something with this game just doesn’t sit right. Where And All Would Cry Beware! was one of my favourite games, the Space Captain McCallery franchise just seems like it’s missing something. Sure, it captures the surreal look and amazing soundtrack presented in so many other Renegade Sector games, but I just don’t see myself coming back to this one.

Whilst all of this is true, I don’t think it’s a necessarily bad game, and so I can’t in good conscience give it a negative review.

  • Invisible walls. Ugh.

  • You can see the edge of the small maps even though you can’t fall off because of the above mentioned invisible walls. If you’re gonna let us see the edge of the world, please just let us walk off and fall forever so we have a reason to quit! That’s a “win” to me!
