Dustoff Z

Nice little snack-size blast-em-up to enjoy between bigger gaming jaunts. I’m surprised this has so few reviews on steam as it’s perfectly functional and cheap game to pick up and gun through on a lazy weekend afternoon. Ignore the time played, I probably took about 4 hours to complete this fully.

The basic premise is you fly a helicopter about on a 2.5D plain after a zombie apocalypse has occurred, strafing zombies down below, all the while performing convoy escorts, base defense, cargo delivery, and survivor rescues. You upgrade the helicopter and onboard gunners with coins and parts/supplies that you collect/earn for completing missions. There is quite a variety of zombie types arrayed against you with plenty of damage they can bring to bear on you (and even the unarmed walkers have a serious jump you need to dodge or you’ll be pulled out of control into a horde). You have to manage your fuel, health and ammo meters throughout each mission which you top up from collectibles that spring from killing zombies or landing or recharge helipads, which also double as in-mission save spots.

Hi everyone I am the bkbossman, you can find me on youTube and publishing videos here on steam. First off I’d like to thank Alf and Marie from Zordix publishing for putting me in touch with this little gem.

I’ve played a few hours of Dustoff Z now and I’m enjoying it thoroughly, it has definitely taken the great aspects of the original Dustoff Heli rescue and enhanced them with a better tech tree, graphical enhancements and a fun and engaging story line.

The original was simple involving just 4 upgrades (2 choppers and 2 guns) and focusing on great game play, something which has transferred well into this latest iteration. The tech tree has been expanded so you now have not only more helicopters to choose from but you can upgrade them individually. You can also now choose to have gunners on your chopper and the type you bring with you can affect your progression in the game.

Ant Force

Ant Force

Ant Force is a platformer/PvP brawler game made by the Russian group Trinity Project by filling out some game templates for GameMaker Studio, a game construction kit. No real serious development effort is involved in filling out game construction kit templates, and it results in very poor quality games, something Trinity Project have a solid reputation for.

It’s no surprise this was dumped into cheap, nasty DailyIndieGame bundles.

While a half-hearted attempt at making a playable video game was done here, as this is differentiated a little from most copy+paste template games, the quality is still deplorably low.

The other review (only one around at this time) is correct for the most part. This is not a game that you should spend money on (I got it in a bundle myself.)

Your “convertiplane” flies above the ground. All enemies are on the ground. All your bullets and rockets are fired in the direction the plane is facing, at a specific angle towards the ground. The “behind and above” perspective means that the only way you can do any sort of aiming is by lining up the target directly “due north” of the plane, and experimenting to see how far away you need to be for your shots to start hitting it. Thankfully the green HP bar on the targets is a big help to find out when your shots actually hit their mark.

This is not a good game. Read the other reviews for more details, but the worst parts are:

  • Controls/Maneuvering is basically non-existant. It’s simply tank controls. You can’t change speed. You can’t change altitude. You can’t even move laterally (strafe).

  • It’s impossible to aim. You can barely even see where you projectiles are firing to.

  • There’s no variety in levels.

Positives:

  • The helicopter model looks cool if you take a screenshot

Aircraft Evolution

Aircraft Evolution

Control a plane that flies towards your pointer, drops bombs and fires missiles so you can wipe out hordes of enemies.

Its a close one here, the controls work fine, its quite neat getting new planes and upgrading them, and the variety of bombs and missions is pretty solid.

but it feels a lot like a mobile game that had microtransactions and wasnt balanced quite correctly when it was ported back to PC. Things go at a fair clip through the first part of the game, but around chapter 2 the difficulty ramps up faster than your money does and you end up in a sort of grind, particularly because even with the best plane in the game your bombs never do that much damage and there are a lot of enemies.

Aircraft Evolution is a casual indie sidescrolling shooter that follows in the footsteps of the 1987 classic Wings of Fury. In my opinion fans of WOF game most likely wont be disapointed acquiring Aircraft Evolution as it does a great job at it. The gameplay of Aircraft Evolution is pretty much about bombing the living hell out of the enemies of differnt eras of the history of airplanes and fending off attacking airplanes in different missions while upgrading and buying new planes. In the current early access build the plane is controlled with the mouse and 3 keyboard keys (z,repair -x,fuel-space,speed) and its rather simple to master. The graphics are hand-drawn and really nice to behold. I bought the game for 3.99 euros and feel i got great value for the money. I’ll rate the game 8/10.

Boom Box Blue!

Boom Box Blue!

“Boom Box Blue is a frenzied skill based physics game. This is what you get if you merge Tetris with physics and throw some bombs into the mix!”

Well, slow down guys.

The truth is that this game features 35 achievement that require basically grinding, and they can be completed within an hour - in fact, the hardest achievement requires us to reach the maximum level, and by doing this we’ll take the other ones too.

So, what’s it all about?

The game itself has a very basic tutorial, hovering upon the ? mark - we must collect stars, avoid red blocks, eat toasts to get bonuses, pick up bombs and drop them with the left mouse button.

“Nom nom nom! Boom!”

This dodge and collect-items game is so cool and appealing in gameplay. I like everthing about it. The soundtrack, the progressively leveling while collecting falling stars, different kind of enemies which you have to bomb away, unforseen special modes like winds that bursts too high grown towers of blocks or darkness that let you only survive in a small light cone. There are powerups. This time mushrooms make you smaller while hamburgers enlarge your box. (I would suggest to being smaller to survive longer) You even can vomit out the burgers if you don’t want to grow too big. You’ll reach all achievement requirements after about 1 hour. Depends if you invest more into stars falling from the sky (faster leveling) or more bombs, bigger explosions or lives (higher scores).
