Symploke: Legend of Gustavo Bueno (Chapter 2)

Symploke: Legend of Gustavo Bueno (Chapter 2)

This is what is apparently an old point and click adventure game ripping off the old Sierra games from the early 1990s, only this was released in 2017.

Regardless, the game is unplayable, you are prompted to enter a password (some kind of copy protection?) which cannot be bypassed and prevents access to the game itself. Resolution is fixed (despite a launcher that pretends to provide you with the option to change it) and the game is unstable, it crashed hard and I had to switch users to regain a working desktop session and terminate the crashed game.

Timothy Leary’s Mind Mirror

Timothy Leary’s Mind Mirror

I absolutely recommend anyone with even a slight interest in psychotherapy to try this game out, not because it’ll blow your mind or because Leary was some kind of genius, but because it’s a solid example of what I believe to be a therapy-oriented game.

Somewhere between interactive fiction and gestalt therapy (not mention the weird words and “archetypes”), this program is for all I have read basically a reproduction of Leary’s PhD thesis. It might well have been a facebook quiz if it was written two decades later! It’s not particularly avant-garde or exceptionally brilliant as far as I’m concerned, but it’s neat to play through.

Developer: Voonle

Publisher: Voonle

Pros:

1. The story does keep its merits as sci-fi with interesting inclusions such as the government taking over privacy and tracking emotions, calls, and other activities. I could see the inspirations if this was inspired by Minority Report or the anime series PSYCHO-PASS, or just the outlook on real life itself.

Free Agency

Free Agency

Free Agency is the life simulation where the agents gradually become self-aware and try to find meaning in their lives. Meanwhile, you have to keep them too busy to think about it.

Bring about their social and financial failure as you micromanage their careers, hobbies, friendships, and romances; all while you find your way around the simulation’s powerful user interface. It’s like The Sims meets The Truman Show.

The world of Free Agency is a computer program. It is inhabited by autonomous intelligent agents: subjects of study in a life simulation. Each agent has a room. Each room has objects. Each object has actions. Each action has consequences.

Approachable & short comedic simulation with point & click and management gameplay.

FEATURES:

  • Fix the 4th wall.

  • Upgrade the simulation itself.

  • Level up in piano, cooking, writing, photography, sleeping, and more.

  • Have them call each other on the phone.

  • Have an existential crisis or two.

  • Pet the cat and dog.

Goop Loop

During the frustrating first play-through of this game I was convinced that it was not a game where you would eventually be able to consistently get past obstacles but I immediately proved myself wrong in the second run. Don’t get me wrong it is still hard but it is definitely a lot more manageable. I definitely recommend it if you like foddian games and if you aren’t afraid of a challenge.

Physics platformers are notorious for being insanely hard.

This one’s no exception. But it does have some quirky/clever vocal (English only) tutorial, that only really speaks up if and when you’re having trouble. I was actually quite amused by how the game knew when to say “You should slow down”, versus pretty much pre-emptively telling me I screwed up when I passed a point of no return.

It’s like having the developer commentary from Half-Life (But more quirky/punny), the goopiness of Gish (With more freedom of movement), and the jankiness of, well, basically every physics platformer out there. My hand started hurting after about an hour, so I had to take a break, but I’ll definitely be trying to finish it after I take a break.
