TL;DR - Skip down to “THE VERDICT”

Anyone who has ever played or seen a video about Minecraft, can probably identify this as “Sky Block”. I went into it mad that they are trying to cash in on, not only another Minecraft clone, but a paid version of a free minigame someone created withing Minecraft. While I am still upset at the idea, you have to remember that the only way to play Sky Block is to own a copy of Minecraft, or at least install and get into the map.

SkyLife however is a variant of Sky Block that runs on its own, and with (somewhat) higher quality graphics. It’s the Unity engine instead of Java, however the quality of the textures are really bad. Using an engine capable of textures greater than 16x16 should be using hi-res graphics and models. Just look at Eco and Creativerse as examples.

A damn shame of a game. If this ever had a proper dev team, then it’d probably be one of the best games out there. Game runs short on things to do after a few hours of gameplay. Do not recommend, go buy Minecraft or something.

This is one of my fav crafting/building/adventuring type of games already and I’ve only around 60hrs of game play so far..it’s right up there with Portal Knights Imo and it’s only early access and doing such a great job! Sure there are the normal early access things to expect…but you can see where things are being improved. The Dev’s are great and respond regularly in the forums..so there is communication..that’s a major plus! Updates/fixes, etc. are not thousands of years inbetween so you can see progress progress progress.

While this still needs some work, I definitely recommend it - on the surface it is a Minecraft clone but look closer and there is rather a lot of innovation. It’s still obviously Early Access – many small to medium bugs – but it’s very playable and has an active developer team. And it’s an absolute steal; I’ve played way less fun games for more money.

Fractal Block World

I like this because it reminds me of Interphase which was technically the first ever FPS, exploration is fun and can be relaxing and at other times tense, I want to see more!

This is a unique game! It’s fun to shrink many times and explore the forests. The mazes were fun, and the 7x7x7 one was challenging. Definitely recommended for players who enjoy exploration.

With all of the reviews and people complained most of the time about the game, I was deterred. However, I still gave this game a chance. I’ve put 5 hours into it now, but I do have quite a lot to say about it.

For those of you who are familiar with FFXIV, you know crafting can be a pain and there are those that enjoy the grind. I’m one of those that enjoy the grind. The time doesn’t really bother me, and for a game that’s supposed to be post-apocalyptic and zombie infested, this seems rather realistic in a sense. You start from nothing, and it’s not about racing to the finish, it’s about making sure you survive and have set up good defenses and prepare yourself for what’s coming. I haven’t come across a crew member yet and I’ve died about 3 times already, and I’m fine with that.

This review is as of initial release, it is a hot mess that could turn good if developers focus on fixing issues.

The good

1: I will say I like the game for its ideals, it gives a good exploration experience.

2: Could be potentially good after more time in the oven.

The bad

1:Crafting times are horrible, it should not take a hour to make 30 seconds worth of rifle ammo.

2:Crafting should not be linked to your character if there is going to be such long crafting times for metals and charcoal.

Note to 2: I see npcs have the option for doing tasks; however npcs are currently broken with no english subtitles or dubbing, along with despawning of said npcs when attempting to restart the game dropping all items in possession on the ground except the equippables, which simply vanish with the npc.

7 Days to Die

7 Days to Die

You like open world? You like exploring? You like being creative? You like dying? Well maybe not that last part, but its going to happen depending on your settings. With the creative aspect, new P.O.I.s to explore and the inherent danger that follows, this game opens your world to the complete experience of what an open world game should be. I didn’t even mention horde night. Prepare yourself for an onslaught of zombies and test those creative skills. Can you survive until morning? I have over 1000 hours into this game and the amount of content available (to include the new update A20 which should be coming soon) Its like a new game every time I play it. A must play.

All these nay-sayers! Ok, so it’s still in Alpha, but to me, that isn’t a bad thing worthy of negative feedback! They have an already epic and fun game to play for free roam, base building survival players who enjoy having something to play with friends. They are CONSTANTLY upgrading, changing, and fixing things up based on the feedback. They did not decide to just whip out an indy game that could be improved and say “finished!” They chose to stick with it.

Sure it says “Alpha” and “early release” but this game is better than most supposedly “finished” games I have seen on steam. There may be some things that would chase a few off, but over all it is great and fun to play. It’s definitely got replay-ability (which most build your own base games lack) and there is enough variance in maps that I do not think I have been on the same one twice.

Astral Terra

Astral Terra

As of May 22nd 2016, I would recommend on sale or bundle.

Unless you are a true sandbox & survival fan that finds joy in all.

As the store page says, it is alpha and if I had the chance to experience it before i owned it, I would probably wait at least 6 months. The developers are very active and always listening and pushing small updates with fixes and improvements. I think another 6 months would be a huge difference.

At first…

When I first saw this game, it reminded me very much of Landmark and when I created my first character and saw the Drow, I immediately went back to memories of EverQuest. After selecting my race I was sad there was not any other options, but I read that character customization is planned.

Review

Here we have astral terra, an early access game that is far from finished. The bad news is that there are bugs waiting around many a corner in its current state. The good news is that there is the foundation of an enjoyable game here. Things will only get better as the game is updated, but it is only fair to consider this when deciding whether to jump into the game today, as opposed to waiting for a few more updates.

To start with, the worlds look very nice. when you begin a game, you choose a ‘seed’ by entering a number. each number will take you to a different world. They have everything covered from desert to snowy mountains. I haven’t felt the need to adventure too far in an individual world, but they feel large in scale.
