Vagrus - The Riven Realms

Vagrus - The Riven Realms

Genuinely good. Multiple ways to play through, interesting conceits and brutal treatment of mistakes. A player really gets the feeling that their choices matter to their future and no decision is taken lightly, whether in the scripted events or even in just where to go. Great game to replay using different builds and goals, which adds longevity. A really good strong start form the devs, they should be proud of their product. I hope they continue to build and improve.

Vagrus is for particular tastes. Do you want an open world trade-simulation oriented RPG with a lot of content, almost all of which is delivered through text? Are you ok with playing a character that never appears in the game except through choices and effects you make on your trade caravan, your companions, and the factions you fight or ally with? Are you ok with these choices changing the course of the overall story only in a limited way, so the bulk of your player effect is in how you choose to advance your caravan and companions and not how you destroy an enemy or change the world? Most of the big moments in the game are finding out about something that is going on, but being unable to completely stop it. Sometimes you can’t effect it at all. But, you learn, and in almost every way in Vagrus, knowledge is power. The user interface is wonky, the gameplay is deep but takes a long time to get your head around, and currently the Internet will not answer all of your many questions about how the world works. You’ll need to figure quite a bit out for yourself. Does that sound fun? give Vagrus a try.

A Winter Story – Original Edition and Highly Difficult

Curator Review:

Finding You Before Spring Coming is a Indie RPG, that feels like the classic Gameboy days.

You wake up to a calm winter’s day, as you take a look out your bedroom window - you see that it is snowing - the sun gleaming through the window. You feel calm and collected, ready for a big day of adventure.

The times of war are over. The Children are free to live a happy childhood, with the young people heading to School to study. Everyone else disappears to the City to find work, some choose to become Traders, others Banking.

What can I say about A Winter Story?

A Winter Story is a game I received through Curator Connect, and a game I would have otherwise not picked up. This game gave me feelings of “made with RPG Maker”, which means I must try it out since they are trying to make their game better than I am. While this is admirable, I didn’t enjoy my experience, and had to put the game down not even 40 minutes in.

First off, I had a hard time discerning whether this game was about to be some kind of H-game with a cutesy RPG cover. The game is translated, and while I’m unsure from which Asian language it is definitely-not translated professionally into English. This causes hilarious mix-ups once you’ve realized that the game is not about selling men into sexual slavery at the age of 29, and often leaves you laughing while holding your head.

Heaven’s Rising

Heaven’s Rising

“Heaven’s Rising” is an open-world action RPG. Its actions unfold at the time of the decline of the Christian faith when she began to be considered noble persons only as a way of governing the people. You play as one of the angels of the “Aspida” group - a special unit of the Heavenly Host, which is engaged in protecting the universe from the confusion of the Expanses. You and your brothers and sisters were sent to the human world to find out the reasons for the massive appearance of demons and put an end to it. In the course of your investigation, you will encounter a wide variety of people, from a simple artisan to a noble young aristocrat, where any of your actions will have consequences. Explore a world full of dangerous ruins, deep forests, and places are forgotten by the Father.

KEY FEATURES

PLAY AS AN EXPERIENCED DEMON FIGHTER

You completed the Great War of the Expanses, where you fought against demons and titans. During the elimination of the consequences of this war, you showed yourself as an incredibly talented demon hunter, which is why you became one of the first members of the Aspid group. For thousands of years, your task has been to protect the universe from the penetration of beings from other Spaces.

  • Send demons and sinners where they belong. Do not spare your enemies, for this can entail consequences.

  • Help people, because the stories of the old hunter by the fireplace are not always pure fiction.

  • Do human work. The world lives its own life and people are ready to pay for the solution of their problems to anyone who can help them. The money earned, in turn, will help you quickly get hold of better equipment.

EXPLORE THE OPEN WORLD

The world around does not stand still but lives its own life.

  • Often, turning off the road, you can find something curious that can serve as the beginning of a whole story.

  • For thousands of years of life, you have learned a lesson - there is no pure good or evil. Make decisions that you yourself feel are right and accept their consequences.

  • The Universe is a much more subtle matter than a person can imagine. It is lucky that you are not, because angels are able to fully feel any changes in the world around them, which can lead you to new places that are invisible at first sight.

CHOOSE YOUR WAY

Perhaps during your adventure, you will change your outlook on the world and want to change your life. Become a hero of Heaven, solving the riddle of the appearance of demons, go to the side of Hell and help former enemies, or leave everything and live your own life away from this endless war. What to do is up to you.

  • Develop your character according to your preferences - use exclusively the capabilities of Heaven or Hell, or correctly combine both elements.

  • Play the selected type. You yourself choose who to be, and not by discovering new abilities and moving sliders, but by deed. All your actions will affect the state of mind, which will directly affect the possible development of the character and the attitude of brothers and sisters towards him.

  • Get to know the world of people better. Over the centuries of work in the “Aspida” group, you thought that you knew human nature, but the new mission requires you to stay in the world of people much longer, which will allow you to open them from a new side.

Paradise Killer

Paradise Killer

An absolute MUST play for any fan of exploration, deduction, investigating and vaporwave games.

Paradise Island 24 is a joy to explore, especially when accompanied with the game’s amazing soundtrack.

Its characters are complex and straight out of a Metal Gear Solid meets SUDA51 marriage.

Finding the truth about what certain characters did/didn’t do made me feel bad, if I’m being honest.

Real player with 36.9 hrs in game

Paradise Killer was such a refreshing experience amid bloated AAA grindathons and I think everyone should try it.

The basis of the game is a murder mystery and finding the culprits is what you will spend most of your time on Paradise Island 24 doing. I won’t talk too much about the background of the story or the world-building because finding these things for myself was very enjoyable, but I will say that the world you inhabit is wonderfully crafted and a joy to find out about.

Paradise Killer has an 80’s Vaporwave aesthetic, which some people may not like, however I believe that even if you don’t it will start growing on you after playing this game. The music is really good, and the way you enable new tracks in the game is great, finding them as you explore the world. Overall the audio design is good, but not brilliant. As I said the music is great, but some sounds quickly got annoying especially the player characters voice lines, as the doesn’t have many so they start to repeat quickly, but the frequency of voice lines can be changed in the settings if it annoys you as well.

The Witcher® 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher® 3: Wild Hunt

There are games that are beautiful to look at. Others of immense depths in gameplay or story. Some have amazing soundtracks and sound design. Few can boast to have all of the above. Red Dead Redemption, Halo CE, Mass Effect 2, Borderlands 2, Divinity Original Sin 2, etc.

Although the Witcher 3 doesnt have the most profound gameplay (a weaker point in that regard, but in no way a low point), it has all of the others.

If i were to write an in-depths review, i’d need hours and hours and obviously, more than the 3000 characters allowed. So i’ll cut to the chase.

I got to this game rather late, and had honestly written it off as bad due to the…short comings of the previous two games. Having now played it however, I can say that it was worth it, and largely enjoyable. Mechanics, while not perfect were a vast improvement over previous entries. The narrative was honestly fantastic. The various methods and means to defeat monsters, and the difference in difficulty between running in half cocked or just taking a few short moments to plan and prep were great. It’s failings are fairly simple and not entirely surprising.

Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut

Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut

TLDR Review:

I recommed this game for it’s wonderful story and characters BUT ONLY buy this game when it’s on sale. This PC port is EXTREMELY buggy even with patches applied and depending on your PC your experience may vary from only experiencing minor crashes now and then to being completely unplayable right from the get go. The hassle to get the game to properly run is not worth the $30 price tag.

Review:

Deadly Premonition: The Director’s Cut is a 2013 HD upgrade of the “Most Critically Polarizing survival horror game ever made ” Deadly Premonition.

Real player with 898.4 hrs in game

“Deadly Premonition” is an open-world murder mystery with horror elements. It features an interesting story with bizarre characters, action sequences that play like a slow third-person shooter, occasional easy puzzles. and a fairly large map to explore. Unfortunately the PC port is barely playable due to technical issues.

The game successfully creates a “US small-town” environment with many characters who have their own schedules, and have different things to say depending on the current state of affairs. The murder mystery is exceptionally well designed - lots of people are suspect in one way or another, but there is no obvious culprit. You always feel that there is more to the murders than you already know, and the story ends in a chain of revelations that definitely surprised me. The main plot is very linear, but the game also offers 50 side quests, and you are usually free to decide which tasks you tackle next. The side quests are, however, often completely nonsensical and feel tacked-on.

DEATH STRANDING

DEATH STRANDING

Real player with 228.2 hrs in game

I just can’t do a simple summary of the good and bad things in this game, so it’s going to be a messy, lengthy account of my impressions.

I had never played a Kojima game before, nor did I follow Death Stranding release, and I didn’t know what to really expect. All I had, from just enough previews to not spoil myself, was the impression of a contemplative game with quite an intriguing sci-fi background to it, which was enough for me.

Honestly, I was confused for the first hour and a half, not knowing what the point of the game was, struggling to grasp its concepts and the “why” of everything, wasn’t sure if I would ask for a refund, but my curiosity kept me going. A good book usually involves the reader constantly wondering “and then what happened?”. In retrospect, that’s a feeling I quickly got, and I was hooked to the story (and the gameplay) until the end.
