A Winter Story – Original Edition and Highly Difficult

A Winter Story – Original Edition and Highly Difficult

Curator Review:

Finding You Before Spring Coming is a Indie RPG, that feels like the classic Gameboy days.

You wake up to a calm winter’s day, as you take a look out your bedroom window - you see that it is snowing - the sun gleaming through the window. You feel calm and collected, ready for a big day of adventure.

The times of war are over. The Children are free to live a happy childhood, with the young people heading to School to study. Everyone else disappears to the City to find work, some choose to become Traders, others Banking.

What can I say about A Winter Story?

A Winter Story is a game I received through Curator Connect, and a game I would have otherwise not picked up. This game gave me feelings of “made with RPG Maker”, which means I must try it out since they are trying to make their game better than I am. While this is admirable, I didn’t enjoy my experience, and had to put the game down not even 40 minutes in.

First off, I had a hard time discerning whether this game was about to be some kind of H-game with a cutesy RPG cover. The game is translated, and while I’m unsure from which Asian language it is definitely-not translated professionally into English. This causes hilarious mix-ups once you’ve realized that the game is not about selling men into sexual slavery at the age of 29, and often leaves you laughing while holding your head.

Retro City Rampage™ DX

Retro City Rampage™ DX

I think the concept of this game is great. The idea is that it’s an open world crime game like GTA, but it’s set in video game land filled with parodies of almost any video game character you can imagine. It’s a brilliant idea, and fortunately the game mostly lives up to this great concept even if it falls short in some areas.

The game plays as you’d expect out of an open world crime game. However, the game tries to have a much better variety of mission styles. It doesn’t try to be only standard A to B shooting. The game tries to mix it up by including missions that are arcade-like or based on old NES games. Thanks to this the variety is incredible and every other mission mixes up the gameplay in some way, so you’ll rarely get bored. The quality of the missions do vary however. A good amount of the missions are fun and challenging, but others tend to be a little shallow and funnled, not leaving a lot of room for experimentation. On the whole though, the biggest problem with the missions in this game is that they’re all a bit short.

Retro City Rampage.

What can I say? I love this game. I can’t even write from an objective standpoint here to make an honest and fair review with this one. I’ve spent over 20 hours with this game here on steam, gotten every achievement- and even then- I didn’t quit. I took the time to Gold Medal all the optional missions too. I seriously can’t get enough. I tried for hours to put my name up on the leaderboards. I’m in the top 20 for lots of the missions and I’m quite proud of that. But enough about me.

Great Game and a Special Gem of 2018

I will update this review quite often, and the game did have some rough patches to get through, I am glad to see this game on steam.

Atmosphere: Feels like Earthbound, Final Fantasy, and maybe Chrono Trigger, The RPG elements is well thought out and for the team’s first game did not turn out so bad after all.

Graphics: 2D, nice touch and the feel fo the design choices fit comforatble well. Very good sense of Nostalgia back in the day when playing old school games. decent animations, could use some more visual power.

The Chameleon

The Chameleon

Ok, I liked this game, might even speedrun it, but I have to give it a negative review because it’s exactly as I feared: it’s just the demo but double length.

For the price point it just ends too soon and feels like it doesn’t explore its concept enough. Also considering this was in the haunted ps1 disc this year, if you’re reading this, you’ve probably played the demo, which means you’ve experienced the best this game really has to offer already and you don’t need to buy it. You get the blink power in that demo and then it ends soon after.

Really fun stealth game!

As a massive Splinter Cell (Chaos Theory) fan, this scratched that itch.

It’s super cheap, but it is rather short (beat it in a little over 3hours), however I think with the price, and just how fun and well designed The Chameleon is, it was definitely worth the price. I think I might even feel like replaying this at some point.

Liked the story, if there ever were a DLC expansion, or just a sequel, I’d buy it.

The atmosphere, visual style, modern effects complementing the retro style, just feels great. There’s neat dynamic lighting, a cool dithering effect on high pixelation, lots of moody coloured lighting, details all around, notes to read to enhance the setting, charming humorous touches.

The Legion of Maelstrom

The Legion of Maelstrom

Great dialogue, fantastic sprite work, and fun battle system! I hopped on board with Andrew R at the last minute and composed the soundtrack for the game, and I’m so glad I was part of the team, as I’m thoroughly enjoying playing it much as I enjoyed writing the music!!!

I really liked this game for a multitude of reasons nobody cares about and I recommend it wholeheartedly but gushing reviews are useless to other people, so I’m going to instead list potential deal breakers.

A few reviews make mention of humor and dialog but there’s not much in this game. There’s actually only enough story to get you going then the game steps back and lets you do your thing undisturbed. The dialog that does exist is pleasant enough and while a few lines of lore are scattered across some bookshelves, I didn’t feel I needed more story than what was given. If you’re expecting some sprawling saga, a speaking protagonist, memorable characters, or love exposition, you won’t get that here.

Planet’s Edge

Planet’s Edge

When the alien craft entered Earth’s solar system, the human race was alive with excitement. However, when it was accidentally fired upon, the consequences were dire. In a burst of electromagnetic energy, the entire planet Earth disappeared, leaving its gravity well and the moon behind.

In this open world, sci-fi role-playing game, you are part of the Moon base team on a desperate mission to bring Earth back. You must assemble and equip your crew, customize your ship and set out in search of unique parts to create the Centauri Drive, a device your team hopes will reverse the electromagnetic phenomenon that swallowed Earth.

Travel between dozens of stars, harvest resources to repair and upgrade your equipment, meet and negotiate with friendly (and hostile) aliens, and do whatever it takes to stay alive and bring Earth back.

Planet’s Edge features:

  • An open-ended story driven by the player

  • Dynamic, real-time spaceship combat

  • Mining, trading and puzzle solving

  • Turn-based ground combat

  • Customize and upgrade your ship for any situation

  • Select your crew (or clone a new one) and equip them for success

Solstice

Solstice

In terms of nostalgia alone, this game wins at life. Even at this early stage, and after only 3 turns I am dead upon the field of battle, brought low by a band of goblins and I absolutely love it.

To follow the development of this title through early access to completion is well worth the price of admission, which is very reasonably priced!

Way back, when I should’ve been studying hard for O levels, I played Lords of Midnight and its sequel, Doomdark’s Revenge. I played them lots. I’ve often ached to play them again and Solstice seems a faithful and loving homage to the worlds that Mike Singleton created. Really takes me back. God bless you Jim Jams. I feel a sniffle coming on.

Undeadz!

Undeadz!

Hey what can I say? Built in one of the most free engines but it certainly called my atention. If you enjoy killing tons and tons of zombies, this game is for you.

It might have minor bugs like those are in the store page but is nothing painful, it ain’t nothing but is the type of a game you only play just to distract. If you had enough of playing competitive multiplayer games or you don’t have good aim, seriously go now and buy it.

If you’re into mysteries, here’s a good one. How do you finish this bloody game? It won’t tell you. It refuses interrogation of any kind. Your only clue is a constantly repeated CB radio message telling you that you’ve called for help but ‘zombies are still sighted in the area’. Kill all the zombies, you say? I HAVE. I HAVE SCOURED THE EARTH OF THE UNDEAD MENACE. And yet, no help comes. Not ever. I’m beginning to think there is none. There’s only two of us here now. Me and the unkillable fish in the river. And I’ve lost the boat.
