Eleven minutes in, and it makes no damn sense.

It is a mine-craft clone of sorts, with a pirate theme, but there seems to be no way to save a game, which really reduces it’s value. You also seem to start out with an infinite number of many resources, although torches don’t seem to work at all. I clicked a lot if keys, but of there is a way to craft, I have no clue what it would be. I checked the surprising short help list, and even what there was didn’t seem to work.

For example L is supposed to toggle my light, but it does nothing.

i pray to god this isnt a release, but a beta. if its a beta its salvageable. but currently it seems to be entirely creative with no ability to access inventory and gets very dark very fast. the movement is somehow jerky and laggy at the same time… and turning the camera or moving causes the entire screen to blur. dont bother trying to fix it in the options menu either. nothing is labeled, its just 4 sliders of undefined nonsense. i cant even use the top button in the play menu. if im doing something wrong please let me know but… currently its just bad.

Badiya: Desert Survival

Badiya: Desert Survival

Only for the EA fans, I will say that.

I personally love these kind of games and have quite a few, but this setting… I just had to have it.

Something absolutely different than other games in the same genre. Those who have played Minecraft (or similar games) know that usually the hardest “world” to survive is the desert. This is all set in the desert, so I think has huge potential of being different and challenging! Also, although at the moment not implemented just yet, there’s going to be sea (and sailing on it), pearl diving, and if I can believe one of the trailers I’d say “Stranded Deep-esque” beaches.

I reveived a key for free, keep that in mind when reading my review.

This review is for alpha 1.9, I will update as the game progresses. I am giving a thumbs up with the following caveats.

1. The game engine is still unstable, though not terribly so. It seems every NPC encountered increases the chance of crashing so make sure to save before visiting any point of interest (area with npc’s). When the game gets laggy save, quit to the main menu and reload.

2. Unfortunately, related to above, the mechanic to save requires building a lean-to. This is not horrible, you can carry the wood around with you, but I hope the devs read this and implement a temporary quick save function until the engine is more stable.

Ring Miner

Ring Miner

Another great lil simulation game from Stolk! The physics are robust and the interface is intuitive. Driving around and digging through asteroids feels good, but at the moment this is mostly just a sandbox to play around in. I’m hoping more missions and things to DO will be added in the future, but even in its current form it’s a good chill-out game for messing around in while listening to some music or a podcast.

Ring miner is a space mining simulator in which you control a lander and a rover. You pilot the lander around a ring of space rocks (around Jupiter), find one that looks suitable (the next one in the ring), land on it, then explore and mine elements in order to collect each one in the periodic table.

https://youtu.be/eqGd4Ahm_lo

This game has complete three dimensional movement, a gravity indicator to help with analyzing landings, the possibility to completely annihilate space rocks, and what is basically an infinite amount of rocks to mine. I have not played anything like this before and I think it’s pretty unique. Check out the gameplay video to see what I mean.

8089: The Next Action RPG

8089: The Next Action RPG

Been testing this since literal first alpha build so take this with a bit of “bias salt” if you want, but my honest opinion:

  • Game is great. Both in VR and non-VR modes. (I played primarily in non-VR). It’s riding on 5089 success and it does so very well imo. Phr00t’s charm is strong in this one.

  • Butter smooth controls, little bit of jank here and there, but otherwise game is great. runs smooth, framerate is stable and fairly well optimised (literally ran on GPD Win2).

  • Gameplay is pretty good. It’s fun to annihilate alien bugs with stealth kills or just shoot groups of enemies with whatever shotgun-sniper-mortar automatic weapon you make. Plenty of good combat abilities to make combat even more fun.

Real player with 139.7 hrs in game

As of writing this review I’ve only been playing for 10 hours, but I seriously could see myself playing this for many more. Don’t let the graphics keep you from playing this game if it seems interesting to you, because once you get used to it, the potato looking bad guys reactions start to give it a certain charm. The real reason to play this game is the gameplay and the core game loop in this is pretty amazing. Primarily it is a game where you want to make your stats and gear’s numbers go higher, and to do that you have to continually venture further into difficult lands. As you progress the enemies grow stronger and you face different and interesting challenges that change up your gameplay. You can’t just rush to the higher level zones and scrape together better gear though, instead you have to activate each new area, which unlocks all the vendors and quests for that particular difficulty level. Supposedly this continues infinitely, and I have no reason to doubt it.

Hello Games did not deliver on what they promised when they released this game and had hells brought down upon them for it (deserving).

Since then they have fixed bugs, added tons of polish, tons of content, tons of extras and have delivered the game they had promised and then some - all WITHOUT ASKING FOR AN EXTRA DIME!

Whereas some other developers released VR versions of their games and had the nerve to charge another $50+ for it, Hello Games released a fantastic and very polished VR play style for NMS, again, without asking for a dime.

I like this game alot but it has some issues that could be fixed.

issues:

base building is a pain because in freecam I cant move the camera up and down with a button like i can in screenshot mode.

and free placement is nice if i could move the part up and down with a button instead of it being completely tied to the camera

The battery until discharged timer is broken(it counts up not down) making figuring out how many solar panels you need difficult

last thing there are very annoying restrictions on where you can summon your ship and freighter and odd restrictions in multiplayer(LAN) like not being able to have two player owned freighters in the same system like how would that be a issue as players are spread so far apart. And the long range inventory access letting you access the freighter inventory and not your storage containers when not in the same system like they are on the same ship why cant i access them.

Planet LEV

Planet LEV

Oh my god I love it. This is like a self contained WaveVR-esq music abstract land, and a fairly expansive one. It seems very alien, like this is where the super intelligent god beings go to hang out. I absolutely love the ability to instantly teleport from one area to the next what with the automap thing (that got stuck to my hand once and I had to restart). In this way you can really get a sense of the entire space, and there are bulidings to go into to, and alot of work is spend on the soundscapes. It’s VR, so there is a gigantic large-breasted anime lady dancing, so it checks that important box as well. Planet LEV is deliciously spacey and abstract.

! Specific areas have songs from real life artists. I saw Boris Divider on the automap. I’m not a huge fan of his work, it all sounds the same. I fell asleep to it once on a plane and woke up to it, and so his beats are endearing to me in that way. However in the current build of LEV that area is replaced with Biosphere, and I love Biosphere and overlay it on my vr videos alot. https://youtu.be/QCVLhZI43AM

Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2

This is an interesting experimental art / music collaboration for VR. If you’re into experimental stuff, then you might enjoy this. I will say that I thought navigation was clunky and unintuitive. You have teleportation only (where you have to click in on the Oculus Quest 2) and no snap or smooth turning.

Starting the experiences is also very clumsy. You can teleport to these pyramid structures then point and click on them with the off-hand (the other hand is for locomotion). Then press trigger. Unfortunately, when I tried the LIVE experience, nothing happened. I assume it was because there was no live experience at that time. There’s also no information on when the live experience would be.
