Gatedelvers

Gatedelvers

A co-op roguelike dungeon crawler that lets you play your way.

NOTE: The Demo version does not feature co-op.

  • High playstyle variety - whether you prefer stealth, swords, magic or crafting, there’s something for you.

  • Upgrade items by fusing other items into them to add bonus effects. A homing pistol? A telescope sword? Maybe don’t make the telescope sword.

  • Grab everything. Grab items. Grab enemies. Grab friends.

  • Throw everything. Like the friend you just picked up! I’m sure they’ll appreciate it.

  • There’s traps. You can fall in them, if you want.

  • A weird sprinting mechanic that makes you run into walls by accident.

  • A cursed sword that makes boulders fall on you sometimes.

  • Other things, probably. We didn’t finish making the game yet.

Son of a Witch

Son of a Witch

Originally, I found this game on the the Nintendo store while browsing for local multiplayer games I could enjoy with my kids. I was drawn to it due to the above but also due to ts great art style and the randomness each game offered. Being an avid Diablo fan going on decades, this really appealed to me.

My three girls and I have a blast playing this and there are not a lot of buttons to remember so the basics are easy to pick up for younger children. I have beaten barbarian challenges with my 3 year old and shes even saved me! Although her favorite is the Alchemist so technically her “friend” saved me.

All around a great game.

TLDR: Magic has 10x more potential than melee and archery. the +1% magic per cast potion needs to be scrapped.

My only gripe with the game atm is that magic can be massively overpowered late game. I have finished all 7 acts (the last being the desert) multiple times now as a magic user, and probably wouldn’t have even needed to look at the screen to beat the final boss (which would be really hard as melee/archer).

The potion that gives +1% bonus magic everytime you cast a spell can be so easily abused. If you get it early on you can just hold onto a voodoo doll (or anything will a low magic cost) and spam it.

Hammerwatch

Hammerwatch

A hack and slash action adventure, set in a fantasy pixel art environment. With amazing music composed by Two Feathers, plus the Online Multiplayer Co-op Adventure, this game hands down is one of my favorite pixelated dungeon crawler still to this date!

IMPORTANT: This is more of a informational review that won’t be going into the game-play.

There are now two campaigns that you can play-through in this game.

Castle HammerWatch: The first and original campaign. Recommended to playthrough at least once before moving on to other campaigns

Hammerwatch is an excellent Gauntlet-style game with very clever level design and its own interesting mechanics.

The game offers two main campaigns for roughly 10 to 15 hours of gameplay combined, 6 playable classes with their own gameplay style, a couple extra maps (survival and defense), as well as a variety of crutches and handicaps to ease or spice up your game.

There also is a level editor and Workshop support for custom campaigns for additional hours of gameplay. I must admit I was expecting a little more maps than what is available right now, but most of the ones available are top-quality and very creative.

If I only had one word to describe this game, it would be… wow!

This is on my list of best VR games of all time. It is very similar to some of the D&D-based board games. You control a miniature and you get two actions per turn — move, attack, play card (although some cards can be played without using an action). You can be one of four classes. While the game mechanics are simple, game play requires strategic thinking (and cooperation when playing multiplayer). Game difficulty is just right. It’s challenging. This is not an easy game and you can definitely get yourself into a bad spot, but it’s not impossible. AI is pretty simple. It seems like for the most part it attacks the closest character within sight, but has a chance to do something unexpected which forces you to change your strategy and keeps the game interesting. This game is fun in single player, but really shines in multiplayer. Enemy difficulty is scaled for the number of players. Experience and loot — gold and chests — are given equally to each member of the party, so there is no fighting over who gets to open a chest or who picks up a gold pile. Graphics are gorgeous and the game atmosphere is fantastic. Sounds and music are excellent as well. I also have to say this game has the best tutorial of any game I ever played. It is engaging and not patronizing.

TLDR: If you have friends to play with, get this game, it’s worth it.

I’ve been playing this game with two other people, we played the first level over and over with every combination of 3 heroes possible. We were clamoring for the new map and then it dropped. We were able to barely squeak out a victory against the rat king the first time. Every single time after that we’ve been absolutely destroyed by the mechanics and various bugs. While we are happy that the game got harder, we just wish a couple of the mechanics were tweaked or that each pack has a difficulty rating. The rat king one being extra hard.

Castle Explorer

Castle Explorer

The fun is in the dying. Die you will. With thousands in gold and a mere step away from the exit or done in by the vampire chasing you-you will die. From dragonfire or traps or even slipping off a plank over a chasm:you will die.Rotating rooms, traps, pits.locked doors, trapped doors and even clear corridors await you. Venture forth and die in the dungeon. A few lucky ones will escape with treasures-a very few. Could you be one? Will you be a legend in the beerhalls or the butt of jokes-did you hear about Dragonspoor with his arms full of treasure trapped in the rotating room against the castle wall helpless while the dragonfie came for him? Yes,the fun is in the dying-unless you don’t. then the fun is in the retelling of your adventures.

Even though I recieved this game for free and it is developed by a close friend of mine I still hope you will take the time to read my honost opinion of the game.

Castle Explorer is a basically board game for pc, and what makes board games good? The experience you get when playing with friends so if you don’t have any friends to play this game with and you have to play with only the AI, I wouldn’t recommend this game.

In Castle Explorer the RNG reign supreme, and even though that might be frustrating to some (especially competitive) people, I have found it quite amusing that you could end up dead on your first turn due to bad luck on the roulette or a bad choice when picking which tile to pick up and place.

Portal Dungeon: Goblin Escape

Portal Dungeon: Goblin Escape

Sorry goblin fans, this goblin is adequate at best.

  • It’s dumb and simple enough to be the kind of inbetween game with nearly no story you can play on a “I want to click and not think at all.” break.

It’s literally just “click to break or attack objects” the game.

  • The goblin’s design is funny since his head looks like a dragon’s.
  • The music is generic and forgettable, seriously just mute it and pick your own music in the background.

  • The sound balance is terrible because the music can be at least adequately hearable. However, the sound effects are incredibly quiet by comparison.

Tallowmere 2: Curse of the Kittens

Tallowmere 2: Curse of the Kittens

THIS IS THE BEST. GAME. EVER. No hyperbole, no exaggeration, no lie. I would have said that for Developer Chris McFarland’s first Tallowmere, where I have over 1300 hours playing, by far the most of the nearly 2000 Games I own on Steam…but his Tallowmere 2 scratched every itch for a second game I didn’t even realize I itched for. Not only masterful, and a perfect improvement on the Original, IMHO, but you get to a point where you can play reflexively; eliminates stress, pain and any downfall while making for a challenging, exhilarating second outing. Pandemic? Tallowmere 2. Bonkers US Election? Tallowmere 2. Worst Year ever? Best Game ever. I’d gained 200 hours playing the Tallowmere 2 Demo, prior to the long-awaited E.A. Release Dec. 4th…and it STILL feels like new. I suppose it could be worse that the biggest shining, glowing Event of the Year is the release of a Game, rather than some personal accomplishment…but then…this Game really is THAT good! Too bad I couldn’t Nominate THIS game a week prior to its' release. IT’S. REALLY. THAT. GOOD. (UPDATE- NOV 2021- I DID NOMINATE THIS GAME FOR 2021 GAME OF THE YEAR!! So, I DID get my chance to Nominate what I STILL adamantly maintain is the BEST. GAME. EVER.!!!! My play-time since I wrote this review should speak for itself, too :) I hope y’all have found as much enjoyment with Tallowmere 2 as I have :) )

I’ve wrenched myself away from Tallowmere 2: Curse of the Kittens in order to proclaim it a bloody triumph. “Wrenched” is both completely honest & a total lie: I’d’ve played for another three hours straight with nary a pause for any reason – mind-blowing sex included – if I’d not been brutally murdered the second I thought, “I am now an unstoppable god.”

I’m already itching to duel katanas again, so I’ll make this as quick as I am in bed & hopefully return for a more thorough review at a later date. Suffice it (for now) to say that fans of clever quick roguelikes are in for a treat. Fans of beautiful pixel art are also in for a treat. Fans of violence & gore are similarly in for a chunky, oozing treat.

Next Up Hero

Next Up Hero

Saw a streamer I know play this and it looked interesting enough for me to buy during the February Steam sale. Since then I’ve been unable to put this game down.

Be warned, though, this is Early Access and it shows. Some of the menuing doesn’t work as expected, you can sometimes get stuck on screens, not all the ventures show, you can easily go out of bounds on some characters, etc. There’s also a variety of tuning issues, with the time trials requiring you to think with a speedrunner’s mindset, the sky is falling levels filling your screen with rocks that on the edge of the level can be hard to see, don’t be greedy levels that rob you of gaining precious prestige, and other things.

I was a bit shocked that with all of the negative reviews I would like the game as much as I did. I have been enjoying it quite a bit and have unlocked a bunch of heroes and created my own stages and so on. It is fairly enjoyable, I also enjoy the boss pushing mechanic as well. It is weird in that you are kinda supposed to die and build on your own defeat. The same goes for other people. If you have friends that play the game it does become way more fun as you can tackle dungeons in co op and also have more echos to use faster as your friends die playing your stages. I had no problem with it. The bosses have a lot of health but in roughly 4 tries if you know their mechanics you can take down their full health bar. The last time I tried I did it in 2.
