Duke Nukem Forever
Duke Nukem Forever. 15 years in the making and yet here I am, considering if it couldn’t have used a couple of more years in development. The truth is though, 5-10-15-20 years it wouldn’t have mattered. The problem here isn’t lack of development, it’s the direction of the development.
All the fluff is there though. Playing this game you will never doubt that this is a Duke game. Scantily clad women are everywhere and you will rarely walk more than ten feet between the various pop culture references, jokes and other nonsense. If anything Gearbox deserves some credit for getting that part of the franchise right. The humor is there, the silliness, the crazy. What they got wrong, is the mechanics.

It’s normal to have high expectations on a game that’s been in development for more than 10 years, but to judge it it’s important to know a little of its development history to understand why they took so long to finish it.
It was remade from scratch many times because of the engine or graphics being outdated, they wanted it to be perfect, or at least as groundbreaking as the original Duke Nukem 3D was at its time. Due to this fact, many of the original ideas planned for the game didn’t make it to the final product as can be seen in its many trailers.

To The Light
Quite simple 2D (RPGMaker?) RPG without leveling and with real time fights right on the map. In order to progress you have to collect gear and buffs. Be careful with item buffs because they are NOT infinite in uses and you may lose them permanently. You can use them again to temporary disable. For example, you may want to disable items when breaking large rotating crystals since they will explode, harm you and break a few buff items. And you have to break at least some of these to progress. Probably the most important buff is shield since I haven’t found where yo restock it and it opens paths blocked with spikes. A couple of secrets, a few easter eggs and multiple endings… well, kinda. You just either do everything right or end up with a wrong one. Don’t rush collecting all quantum piece, though, or you won’t be able to get 2 achievements for the wrong endings. Save often in different slots and you should be fine. Music is nice, art is pretty, story is bizarre and shown mostly with environment and short in-game animations. In case you desire more kinky stuff install both nude patches (look on community hub). Does it actually worth a full price? Not quite sure, but it ain’t bad. With good discount might worth to pick up.

This game could have been much better if it did not give conflicting information to the player.
For example some enemies you could hit, while others you can’t and you get hurt when you attack them. There is no indication that could help you identify this, so you have to experiment and lose lifes and restart or load again.
Another example is that some rocks could hurt you when you try to push them or hit them, while others don’t. Again how would the player know? many other example exists but I think these two gives a clear idea.

The best visual novel and game about drugs I’ve ever played. If you want to get sucked into a vortex of twisted plots, this game is definitely for you. Different storylines and endings make this game playable for long hours. Depiction of drug effects are also very imaginative and sometimes trippy as hell.

Just Deserts
Just Desserts is a weird game to me. It’s genuinly a fun game, but I think the charm of it fades after a playthrough. I’d say this game is more of a Dating Sim if you were to think in general terms. Each day you have a certain amount of energy to use on moving maps, and doing activitys. You have thirty days to romance someone, and the game is time based as in a certain activity will speed the day ahead by a certain amount. Midnight becomes an unending hour as long as you have energy to burn, but none of the girls are available at night, so it’s mostly when I do Patrol Work in the game.

This game is made by my fellow countrymen but I have to judge this game fair and square.
Story = 6/10
You, the lieutenant, have 30 days in the deserts, fighting the mysterious aliens
with the help of 5 cute girls.
Day by day and the story goes on, it won’t really tell much about the story itself.
If you just complete 1 random girl route, you won’t understand the whole story.
So I suggest to clear all of the Girl’s Routes, some of them are essential to true story.
But…Even though I have cleared all routes, in the end I was just, “Oh ? That’s it ? Its just like that ?” Story itself isn’t the selling point in this game.

Half-Life: A Place in the West
There’s a logic in Hollywood that video games can make good movies, despite the fact that few if any films actually bear this notion out (and believe me, I’m being kind by saying “few”). Similarly, it’s questionable to what degree a video game is liable to translate into the medium of comics.
Theoretically, probably a little BETTER than movies…but I’m still not quite convinced. A good “story” in a video game is a completely different thing to a good story in either film or literature, and a video game’s notion of “character” is more often than not a good-looking and functional avatar designed to move the “plot” forward, and give the player an adequate excuse to kill things or solve puzzles. I’m sorry, but Leon from the Resident Evil franchise ISN’T a “character”, boys and girls. He’s a floppy fringe with a gun, and a libido sufficient to make him willing to rescue cute young girls on the back of his speeding jet-ski. You want character, try Taxi Driver (it’s an “old” movie from the 70s, look it up).

Estimated reading time: 4 minutes, 11 seconds
Half-Life: A Place in the West teases the Half-Life fans by delivering a very compelling story based on the Half-Life universe, presented as a fan-made digital comic featuring a total of 13 chapters which are planned to be released over several years. By the time of writing this review, 5 of them are available on the Steam store (the first one being free).
Even if the comic uses the Half-Life setting, its story follows a completely new path, unrelated to the characters featured in the series so that it’s not centered on Gordon Freeman’s adventures. I haven’t played any of the Half-Life titles, yet I greatly enjoyed reading the comic which didn’t require any prior knowledge about the franchise. The few intro pages describe this setting very well and the info provided is enough to get you started: at Black Mesa Research Facility, scientists discover a new alien life form and while attempting to analyze it, they accidentally cause a dimensional rift to open; as a consequence, Earth becomes exposed to an alien invasion. Seven hours later, the extra-terrestrial race known as the “Combine” conquers the planet entirely and kills most of humanity. Gigantic towers, called “Citadels” are sent out by the Combine to the major cities of the Earth, in order to enforce their will on the remaining living people.

Planet Stronghold: Colonial Defense
First of all this game is a pretty unique mix, it has some flaws yes, but its strengths definitely outweighs them.
The card game, while unusual for such a game is actually really good. Compared to the standart rpg fights in similar games where you have 3 or 4 different spells or attacks and you just have to see which type of elemental damage does the most harm and spam that and throw in a heal or stun from time to time, the card battles feel more challenging. On the highest difficulty level you actually have to think about which cards suit in which situation. Also it kinda suits the theme. While in fantasy settings I prefer the party of heroes wandering around fighting its battles itself, here it feels more like you are the base commander managing troops and resources of your colony and thinking strategically.

One of the worst Winter Wolves' games out of the ones I have played. It has very few redeeming qualities and while I usually like WW games despite their flaws, I had a hard time enjoying this one.
Characters
Unfortunately, the characters were very weak in this game. WW can create some interesting characters and I know this, but in this case, I think they missed the opportunity to do so. The good news is that there are many characters you can choose to romance (with the free DLC). The bad news is that the characters felt shallow and unrealistic. I know you don’t play these games for their realism, but one would expect them to at least have some common sense. Instead it seemed like they were doing the most irrational things. For example at some point
! the rebel guy implied that he has assassinated people. Why would he admit that in front of people who are military officers? It makes no sense.

Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour
This port of Duke Nukem 3D is like rereleasing a classic movie like Casablanca on a 240p resolution. It ruins the smooth, crisp movement of Duke, makes a 25-year old game lag from vsync and ambient occlusion, and replaces the expansion packs from the Megaton Edition with a fourth episode. The best way to play this port is not to, but to install eDuke or BuildGDX and play Duke Nukem 3D that way. While you install them, be sure to install the expansion packs and play them on said ports.
Bring back the Megaton Edition.

Humanity is on the ropes yet again. What is it with mankind anyway? It seems like every alien race in the universe wants to see us enslaved, obliterated, or pushed into the mud. Once again you’re the lone hero who must push back, and you can’t stop until the extraterrestial menace is well and truly wiped out. Shoot 1UP starts with the most basic concept imaginable: You shoot, and you collect 1UPs. Since I grew up on arcade 2D shooters, I’m surprised to see any game where more than two or three extra lives can be attained per play-through. In Shoot 1UP, you get a 1UP every two or three seconds. Wow, not only is it Christmas, but I got the cyborg unicorn that I always wanted.

Edit: It’s become one of my favorite games on Steam! You will really have to think to beat the higher difficulty levels.
It’s a good idea, realize the execution is currently very crude, and English descriptions are laughable. ; - ) almost returned it, but I’m hoping it will continue evolving.
There are some aspects of Tetris (or more accurately Rampart) in the placement phases.
it would be better to have more tiles, as it’s easy to trap yourself with a layout you can’t expand. Edit: You will learn that you can remove the bases and relocate them! Do this wisely for better chance of survival.

If you’re a native English speaker like myself, you might have an issue locating the button to select language. It’s a small hurdle. Apart from that, once you get an idea of what you’re doing in this game, it becomes extremely interesting. You start your little game being able to flip over three tiles, which you can select one of as your turret of choice. It doesn’t end there, and if you think your level one turret will end up just taking space, it won’t. Once you get enough turrets that fit into a crafting recipe, it’ll wipe those tiny little baby turrets out and replace it with a turret with more hair on its chest than Austin Powers’.
