Fortress of Hell

Fortress of Hell

Fortress of Hell is an RPG Maker game, but one intended for a mature audience. Its heroes are all grown up, frequently vulgar/cynical, and there will be plenty of sarcastic remarks. Also the theme of the games is quite depraved. While I’m not well versed in the state of RPG Maker games in the 2010’s, the combat system in this game seems fairly good, rewarding the use of buffs and debuffs, and requiring some management of TP/MP. You won’t be able to simply spam skills and spells even in normal mode. Thankfully most of the enemies can be dealt with mere weapon attacks, once your party has leveled up a bit. The progression of the heroes contain numerous points, where you have to choose one talent out of 3 or 2. The description of the outcomes are sometimes too vague, so you might end up with an underwhelming upgrade. Not that it matter that much, on normal difficulty the game can be easily completed even with subpar choices.

Aldorlea Games surprised me here with a much darker, even mature, themed game as we are used to from them. And it’s a pleasant surprise. It’s certainly one of their best games.

The story may be cheesy as hell but… cheesy in a good way. And yes the game is dark but it’s also spiced with a lot of humour. The dialogues are, off course, cheesy but that fits very well here.

Obviously a lot of thought and effort went in to this production. The castle just looks wonderful, a lot of attention was spend to the decoration and the looks of each screen and it shows: it’s one of the better looking RPG Maker games out there. Aldorea once again proves that you can make a pretty looking game just with stock material.

An interesting horror game. I enjoyed following the plot to its end. There is a bit of translation issues but for the most part the story is still discernable though at a couple points I had no clue what it meant. Also it’s pretty hard to get all the endings. Nearly nine hours of play and I only got the “bad” ending. Oh well. Still pretty fun and interesting.

This looks like a nice game except for two problems

No hints. Some hints would be nice every now and then.

Can only be saved at certain points and if you do nor reach that point you lose all you’ve done

I wasted over one hour trying to reach the endpoint to what I was doint. I clicked everywhere but there were no tasks to be done. Eventually I had to leave, and I lost all the last hour.

Developers: Either put hints or make it possible to save at any point.

As it is, my time is valuable and I cannot waste it looking for an endpoint.

This one surprised me.

I bought the game originally for harvesting resources, but then I found myself loving the story & wanting to get all of the endings. I didn’t even realize I spent 20+ hours on it until I started writing the review. Really?

It is a very detailed, story-rich RPGMaker game that honestly I would not have minded spending $5+ to get my hands on, and it was just a few cents over a $1. Makes me feel a bit guilty. The character detail was enough to grip my emotions personally - and the designs were wonderful. Consummate’s artwork was beautiful & definitely left an impression. I would say this is a surprise gem that is best suited for classic & retro RPG enthusiasts wanting a casual, non-adult, story-rich gameplay experience that doesn’t take too much time to complete. Those with requirements beyond that may struggle to enjoy the game properly.

The player acts as an amnesia girl, Consummate, trying to escape the house of a strange man. Although some scenes are punchlines and teases, it still ads a bit of change in the mood especially when Consummate starts to act childish. A lot of room escapes with plot adding adequate exploration elements to the game. It also has some easter eggs coming from the devs so be sure to check it out!

Overall, it’s a fun and simple puzzle which can be relaxing sometimes. Lots of endings, which basically consumed most of my time, with their corresponding achievements in the game. It’s not the best

! rated 6.5/10 for me (fact) but I can still give a positive rating and recommend this for people who loves rpg puzzle mystery kind of game.

Death Coming/死神来了

Death Coming/死神来了

Wow. Apparently the game was released by accident and just happened to come across my queue this morning. So I took a chance and tried it out, not realizing just how “new” it was.

The concept is great. You are assisting the grim reaper and you have to kill as many people as possible. Each level has three specific targets that are harder to kill and must be lured or tricked in order to get them to come out. The challenge comes from two areas. First, some traps are one time or limited use. So if you don’t have people lined up just right, or have every single person in the same area that this trap can hit, then you can’t get a perfect score (by killing everyone). The second challenge comes in the form of angels. The more you kill, the more angels show up. If they see you messing with anything, you loose a heart. Loose all three, and you restart the level.

A fun little puzzle game, Death Coming tasks you as a helper of the Grim Reaper himself and helping him harvest as many souls as you can in your quest to get your reward of another chance in life. To do this you must explore a varietyof different situations, from the casual neighborhood, a factory, to even a mysterious tropical island, exploring various ways to kill not only the random NPCs but also your special marked targets (that offer a special ending if you get them all).

All in colorful pixel graphics with a lot of funny little situations and animations, simple but serviceable quriky music that fits the premise, making for a very pleasant game.

Nice mystery and for a good price too! The actors/actresses did a great job acting out their roles. The story plot was really interesting and I love how you can use the flowchart to change your decisions rather than having to restart the game from the very beginning. If you are a fan of mystery games, point & click, and loves a good story, I would recommend giving this game a try.

The Barbarian and the Subterranean Caves

The dialog are well-written. The graphic is unique yet weird, i find it funny somehow but actually liked it.

The story itself is about 20 mins long. Who you visit at the beginning will make you run into different endings. However, even accept the mission from different people, you are going to meet the same person and get the same loot at the end. But your decisions, thoughts, enemies, and your story ends in different ways.

Aren’t these real lives?

Turbo Kid

Turbo Kid

Turbo Kid is a BMX-powered pixel-art Metroidvania gore-fest based on the film of the same name.

This is the future, the world as we know it is gone. You are The Kid, a lone warrior on a journey to cross the Wasteland in search of hope. What you will find on your way however is a land riddled with scoundrels and creeps which you’ll have to go through - sometimes quite literally - in order to survive.

Turbo Kid’s choc-full-of-mayhem Turbo Glove™ will help make your quest smoother and much, much bloodier! Turbo Blast, Electric Shocks, your trusty machete, and then some; use the array of weapons at your disposal to slash, rip apart, or explode enemies into hysterical and over-the-top splashes of gore!

Run, crawl, jump, hang, and, for the very first time in a Metroidvania (don’t research this), bike your way through the levels! Ladies and gentlemen, we give you the height of human-powered transport technology: the BMX Bike!

Move around the map faster, access new areas, and practice your bike tricks in preparation for the 1998 Wasteland Olympics Freestyle BMX Event. No need to find an unrusted fence to lock your bike in this game! It’ll be there at the touch of a button whenever you need it.

Our story begins immediately after the events of the movie, as the Kid, you must cross the Wasteland after losing a friend in a tragic bloody battle. On your way, you will meet an array of colorful characters, some friends, some foes, and some in-between, who will offer advice, quests, fights, and jokes (lots of jokes).

We’re really proud of the story we’ve created for the game and we think you’ll enjoy it too. That being said, if you’re only in it for the gameplay and the story isn’t for you, you won’t even need to skip the cutscenes, you can basically just ignore and walk past them.

Like the Metroidvanias of old, TURBO KID allows you to explore the different zones and defeat bosses in the order you see fit, favoring exploration and discovery over a linear narrative. Over the course of the game, you will also be asked to make personal and moral choices that will affect the process of the game allowing for multiple playthroughs with different paths and outcomes.

Vomitoreum

Vomitoreum

I loved playing both Shrine and its successor and I had high hopes for Vomitoreum, and what can I say: The most disappointing thing on this game is its title.

Vomitoreum is what I always wanted from lovecraftian cosmic otherworldly horror games. It is strange. It is sick. It is deranged and so out of this world that I have absolutely no idea who I am, where I am and what I want. A welcoming change from other horror games is (until now) the absence of jump scares and and a welcoming shortage of too dark areas. Vomitoreum lives from its alien world design and inhabitants, many of them not even hostile. And the great art style and soundscape enhance the impression of strangeness and foreignness so much that the strangest thing I literally experienced was finding cars and mundane machinery in one level whose engine noises sounded like music compared to the industrial synth drone that serves as the actual soundtrack to the game.

I would like to first start out by saying that scumhead is a budding developer and art director worth watching out for, I certainly look forward to what he and his team can do if and when they found a studio. I believe in his vision and capacity to deliver aesthetically interesting and old school fps games, that being said I think Vomitoreum displays some poor game design decisions that hold it back from being worth the price tag.

Pro’s

  • Unique setting

  • great sound design (ambiance and enemies)
