9 Monkeys of Shaolin

9 Monkeys of Shaolin

A great, modern beat em up that dared to be different instead of relying purely on nostalgia and making a carbon copy of already existing games. This game is basically everything I wanted Streets of Rage 4 to be.

Positives:

  • Decent story. (Not that stories in a beat em up ever mattered)

  • Very fluid and satisfying gameplay. When you get the hang of the mechanics and skills, you can do some awesome combos, linking the different attacks and abilities together. The fact that you can attack in 360° instead of being forced to a 2D pane doing only left/right attacks is a welcome change. There is a bit of ‘automatic lock on’ for the moves to help with this, but you still feel in control of the character. Sending enemies flying and watching their rag-doll bodies fall/smash against the environment is never not satisfying.

9 Monkeys of Shaolin is a beat em up about a chinese fisherman/monk fighting the japanese pirates with a staff.

The main appeal is the satisfying, fluid and responsive combat. It has good skill expression with three different attacks that later get upgraded each with two different stances, a 360 degrees parry skill that requires good timing and can reflect enemy projectiles back at them and a dodge. Once you upgrade the attacks, you can fly across the screen with a kick and feel like a real Shaolin monk jumping and weaving attacks between multiple enemies. The use of magical seals disrupts enemies in an area that in my opinion make the game too easy even on the hardest difficulty. The enemies have a visual indicator, a brief shining light and take some time to execute their attack which usually makes them easy to defeat one on one. The only unfair element is sometimes ranged enemies shoot you from outside the screen. You will fight them in small groups in a locked zone until you defeat them and new enemies that need to be approached in a different way are introduced progressively. Finishing off the last enemy in a locked zone comes with a satisfying blow and slow motion.

Ninja Issen (忍者一閃)

Ninja Issen (忍者一閃)

「Ninja Issen」 is a retro-style ninja platformer that features a variety of hyper action, 1 vs. many battles, and dynamic boss fights. Paying homage to the ninja games of the classic 8-16 bit era, 「Ninja Issen」 will be full of ninjas, robots, neon lights, and dark atmosphere that overwhelms the streets of the future metropolis.

You will be 「Kiba」, a rogue ninja who was falsely accused of assassinating the grand master of his clan. In his desperate fight to escape from other ninjas trying to avenge his crime, 「Kiba」 suddenly finds himself in the middle of the world he has never seen.

THE GAME

In 「Ninja Issen」, you will always encounter 1 vs. many battles in which you must use everything to survive. The enemies come in many types and designs, large in number and ready to strike wherever you go.

Fortunately, 「Kiba」 is a seasoned and skillful ninja who can overcome dangers ahead of him. Use 「Kiba」’s weapons and abilities to cut down rushing enemies, and explore the future metropolis.

• Katana: 「Kiba」’s main weapon which is highly effective in close combat.

• Shuriken: Used for long-range attack and to deflect enemy projectile.

• Teleport: 「Kiba」 can teleport by throwing his katana to the spot he wishes to reach. Use it to jump between high structures and pass through traps like a pro ninja.

Combine 「Kiba」’s weapons and skills to make your own ninja fighting style.

BOSS BATTLE

Each stage will have a boss that features unique patterns and gimmicks. As 「Kiba」, you will need to find out how to withstand their threatening attacks, and achieve victory in the end.

When the boss' remaining HP reaches a certain point, the battle will move on to phase 2, where it will show new and fiercer attacks. In some of the boss battles you can destroy parts of the bosses, after which slight changes may occur in their patterns.

I know the game looks like retro puke, but I enjoyed playing it from start to finish. The developer did a good job with extra content, such as unlockable characters, skins, and bonus stages. Honestly, the biggest problem here is not the aesthetic or platforming sections, it’s the lack of partial controller support. The gameplay is very basic, most of the enemies die from one attack - feels like an early Shinobi game which I do not mind. It takes about 2-3 hours to complete the story on normal difficulty; however, you won’t be able to get all of the extra content on the first playthrough. Even though the game is somewhat trashy, suffering from occasional hit-box and platforming issues, it’s kinda fun due to cheesy cutscenes and weird enemy design. There are some power-ups that you can get but they really don’t add a lot of depth to the game, you just run out of ammo too quickly. It’s not too difficult and the settings allow you to adjust some features in order to make it easier, but it’s just challenging enough to be entertaining. Lastly, the game had a few different composers, which would explain why soundtrack quality goes up and down.

Needs further polishing , an artist, and a music professional.

Swing hitbox for killing enemies needs to be bigger, ninja gaiden for the nes hitbox wasnt that small

Character movement is fluid

Its not bad, it just needs alot of work still

Ninja Pizza Girl

Ninja Pizza Girl

Color me amused. I am not someone who considers themselves good enough to be a speedrunner. I never will and am at peace with that. I may have been as a youngster but not anymore. However, if I were to pick up a game and recommend it to them and players like me it’d be Ninja Pizza Girl. This may well be one of the more underappreciated games released in the past twelve months.

Ninja Pizza Girl is a game that I’ve had sitting on my wishlist since its release last September. That’s really not saying much as I tend to have a wishlist containing every game that has trading cards that I don’t own. And so it sat there until I was recently recommended the game by a regular Steamified reader. He suggested that I may want to feature it given the popularity of the genre among readers. I didn’t even know that the game was funded by the Queensland State Government, the state in which I live. I’m particularly critical of games that are from the place I call ‘home’. This is because I don’t want my personal cheerleading to persuade you to buy a game you’d be unhappy with. However, due to how much fun I actually did have with the game it’s impossible not to recommend it to you.

Me: Ninjas and Pizza? This is basically every mans dream combination.

Distant voice: What about the girl?

Me: Gemma? Oh she’s cool, BUT THE PIZZA! mouthwater intensifies

Ninja Pizza Girl is a game about a girl named Gemma, who helps her dad deliver pizza… the cool way, by jumping over roof tops like a true ninja. But Megaco, a big company who monopolises the industry in the game, hired ninjas to stop Gemma from delivering pizzas (ps: the ninjas are jerks).

Aragami 2

Aragami 2

My experience with the game was very good. Finished it once in a lethal two player coop run, and then once again in a solo pacifit/stealth run. Both of my playthroughs were very relaxing and pleasant. The game world is pretty and the soundtrack is charming at times. Stealth gameplay is very solid yet not too tedious. Storytelling and dialogue is minimalistic, but it provides a good setting for the gameplay.

It is about 5 times longer than the first installment, the level design is more open and diverse, and the graphics are stylized but beautiful in their own right. It compares well to the “normal” difficulty of the original game, but I would prefer a setting to make visual and hearing perception distance of enemies greater than it is. Your character is less squishy than it was in the first game, but if you mostly play this for stealth, you will only notice when surviving a nasty fall here and there (though not always).

NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 2

NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM 2

Great game! I can’t recommend it however. It follows the story well and the fighting is lovely. The boss fights were okay and the length of the game was okay. The reason I can’t recommend this is because of the side stuff the main story forces you to do. You basically have to run back and forth from each fight and that takes a considerable amount of time. I think I spent most time running rather than fighting or watching the cut scenes maybe even lol

In terms of its predecessor which I just finished before this one, it is mosttttly a lot better, except for the aspect of running everywhere lol. agh! xD

After playing through the first Storm game, the experience delivered was so good that it left me afraid of it dropping down, and well, it kinda did but also not. A better look at the series for me is, one step forward, two steps back. But still, an incredible game nonetheless.

To get off with my rant first, let me talk about how disappointing it was to realize that some of the best features from the first game were excluded, probably the coolest one, Ninjutsu Clashes, like what the hell, perhaps it was due to this game featuring an Online Mode, but it could have also been an Offline feature and things would have been much better. Also, wall climbing and free camera roaming, and it could have sworn that the first game had a better interface designs and menus overall.

Nightshade/百花百狼

Nightshade/百花百狼

I really have no idea what to say about this game, but I will try my best.

–-I like everything medieval so the setting and atmosphere was appealing. I think it did a fair job conveying it.

—The sound track throughout the game nicely coincides with the atmosphere. I did not tend to like the opening theme song, but, in hindsight, it works anyway despite it.

—The artwork was well done and for once most/all the characters are dressed stylish instead of sad and pathetic (I am especially looking at you Amnesia memories).

TL;DR Nightshade is the equivalent of an AAA game in the otome world, and absolutely worth its price.

First for an overview.

Nightshade is a visual novel on what it means to be a shinobi in the Sengoku era of Japan, during a time of tentative balance teering on the brink of change. The main character (I strongly recommend keeping the canon name Enju since the other characters will actually say her name) is a girl who is determined to give back to her shinobi village, and finds herself way in over her head in a conspiracy.

Sekiro™: Shadows Die Twice - GOTY Edition

My proudest gaming achievement.

Sekiro is a rock hard, unforgiving, thrilling, beautiful, roller coaster of a ride. Any Souls game experience you have will actually work against you in Sekiro for the most part. It takes the From Software formula in a completely new direction that was initially frustrating for me but ended up be incredibly fulfilling.

My initial playthrough was going along great until I ran into Shinobi Hunter Enshin of Misen. That guy was the biggest brick wall of any From Software game for me. I actually gave up for awhile but eventually it clicked. I Got Gud as they say.
