Shadow Gangs

Shadow Gangs

Prelude:

I met the developer of Shadow Gangs a decade ago on a Retro forum. He first started this project back in 2015, as a Kickstarter campaign which unfortunately was cancelled.

He knew that I was loved the arcade version of Shinobi, and was very good at it.

Imagine my surprise when he asked me to be a beta tester and give feedback; what an honour and privilege.

Review:

Firstly, let me just say that this game is absolutely spectacular!!! Not only does this live up to my perceived expectations, but far exceeds them by a long shot.

Ninshi Masuta

Ninshi Masuta

Tight controls, smart game design, crisp graphics, and an exciting soundtrack.

This game surprised me. It feels like a retro game, but it has a lot of modern niceties and upgrades. And it’s HARD. That said, it’s fair. I still need to beat it.

For the first game from FVS Games, this is a winner.

Ninja Issen (忍者一閃)

Ninja Issen (忍者一閃)

「Ninja Issen」 is a retro-style ninja platformer that features a variety of hyper action, 1 vs. many battles, and dynamic boss fights. Paying homage to the ninja games of the classic 8-16 bit era, 「Ninja Issen」 will be full of ninjas, robots, neon lights, and dark atmosphere that overwhelms the streets of the future metropolis.

You will be 「Kiba」, a rogue ninja who was falsely accused of assassinating the grand master of his clan. In his desperate fight to escape from other ninjas trying to avenge his crime, 「Kiba」 suddenly finds himself in the middle of the world he has never seen.

THE GAME

In 「Ninja Issen」, you will always encounter 1 vs. many battles in which you must use everything to survive. The enemies come in many types and designs, large in number and ready to strike wherever you go.

Fortunately, 「Kiba」 is a seasoned and skillful ninja who can overcome dangers ahead of him. Use 「Kiba」’s weapons and abilities to cut down rushing enemies, and explore the future metropolis.

• Katana: 「Kiba」’s main weapon which is highly effective in close combat.

• Shuriken: Used for long-range attack and to deflect enemy projectile.

• Teleport: 「Kiba」 can teleport by throwing his katana to the spot he wishes to reach. Use it to jump between high structures and pass through traps like a pro ninja.

Combine 「Kiba」’s weapons and skills to make your own ninja fighting style.

BOSS BATTLE

Each stage will have a boss that features unique patterns and gimmicks. As 「Kiba」, you will need to find out how to withstand their threatening attacks, and achieve victory in the end.

When the boss' remaining HP reaches a certain point, the battle will move on to phase 2, where it will show new and fiercer attacks. In some of the boss battles you can destroy parts of the bosses, after which slight changes may occur in their patterns.

STRIDER™ / ストライダー飛竜®

STRIDER™ / ストライダー飛竜®

Strider stands as a reboot to an old Arcade series by the same name. The game stars Hiryu, the last remaining Strider to be sent on a suicide mission that involves taking down Grandmaster Meio, the iron fisted ruler of Kazakh City and the Earth and avenging the fallen Striders.

The game’s mechanics are pretty simple, like an old school title should. It’s structured very similarly to some older games like Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Super Metroid and the such as it has a lot of backtracking as well as you gain new powers to unlock new doors and the such - which may lead to new powers, health upgrades, energy upgrades, kunai upgrades, etc. There’s lots to find in the game.

As a Strider fan, this game was a disappointment.

Compared to other “metroidvania” games, this game is a disappointment.

New and improved review with impressions I wrote up when asked for specifics about why I disliked the game so much.

For the record, I spent somewhere in the neighborhood of 9-10 hours with Strider. It was just enough to get 100% and then delete it from my hard drive immediately.

I can honestly say I will NEVER play that game again. EVER. And here’s a list of reasons why:

(1) There is no variety, in anything. There’s two main types of levels – futuristic cityscape and sewer. Maybe you could count the temple area… maybe… but it reminds me a lot of a blend between the sewer and the city. This makes it feel like you’re never going anywhere.

ULTRA NINJA SOUL

ULTRA NINJA SOUL

ULTRA NINJA SOUL is an orthodox platformer. The player’s goal is to control the main character, a ninja, and rescue a princess who has been kidnapped by youkai.

The player collects sealed cards of ninjutsu from treasure chests along the way and uses a variety of attacks to conquer the stage. There are four bosses that stand in front of the player along the way.

Mark of the Ninja: Remastered

Mark of the Ninja: Remastered

This is unequivocally one of the best stealth games around. It’s certainly one of the best Klei games.

The non-remaster version is no longer available on Steam for purchase so it’s a moot point, however:[olist]

  • Updated/enhanced visuals of an already fantastic art style.* Improved audio.* Includes the DLC “Dosan’s Tale”.[/olist]

Mark of the Ninja is effectively an instant classic as much as I hate the phrase. Seeing inspiration from the original MS-DOS Prince of Persia and the NES Ninja Gaiden with modern convenience and a stealth focus — Mark of the Ninja is what I’d call a ‘pure’ stealth game. What I mean by this is that fighting head-on is highly discouraged. But this does not mean you’re limited in how to accomplish the task set before you.

Rule number one: don’t get me killed.

Mark of the Ninja Remastered is a 2D stealth-platforming game. This re-release bundles a gameplay expansion, developer commentary, and improved visuals.

“Glint of Shuriken

Reflects as fear in the eyes

Of Tetsuji’s prey.”

As far as I can see, the sole improvements over the original release amount to some cutscene animation being smoother. Nonetheless, the game still looks fantastic thanks to the crisp hand-drawn art style and fluid character movement. The lighting engine remains mechanically simple, but objects turn black-and-white in the shadows, creating an excellent example of chiaroscuro.

Ninja Striker!

Ninja Striker!

Ninja Striker! is a bit of what I would call a casual platformer. I hesitate to fully commit to that statement because it can be read as a lack of challenge – and that’s not the case here. But if game mechanics can be meant to make you feel something (they can, of course), then Ninja Striker! is meant to make you feel powerful. There are three buttons that make up your movement and attack options: A for jump, B for dash and X for homing attack. Each of the playable characters have a unique flavor for these actions: the default ninja can double jump and the dash is a 360-degree attack. Conversely, the robot ninja can hold jump for a thruster effect but the dash only attacks in the direction he’s facing. These generous movement and attack options mean that you can glide around the level homing in on bad guys as you see them to rack up combos while never touching the floor.
