METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE

METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE

One of my favourite games of all time because:

  • Played the game on 360 years ago and recently managed to get 100% on PC

  • Guaranteed to make you feel like a badass

  • Offers easy to learn and hard to master gameplay

  • Amazing OST that I listen to mostly daily

  • Fun dialogue, bonuses and secrets

  • Memes, memes and yes more memes

  • Small and amazing community

  • Somewhat short but sweet story

  • 2 neat DLC side stories

  • Jetstream Sam is sexy

Yeah that about summarises it, oh and PLEASE use a controller. :)

NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM Revolution

NARUTO SHIPPUDEN: Ultimate Ninja STORM Revolution

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution is not as revolutionary as the title might suggest, but I think it’s the step in the right direction.

The disappointing thing is lack of canon story mode in the game. Instead, we have Ninja World Tournament, Mecha-Naruto Story and the Ninja Escapades. The Ninja World Tournament is just mode, in which you thrive for championship in a tournament consistin of 4-characters brawl. Initial ranks of the tournament are easy, but difficulty rises gradually. Also, you can roam the island (the bigger progress you made in the tournament, the more areas you can visit), doing challenges, missions and events. Even thought it has absolutely nothing to do with canon storyline, the mode is quite fun to play, some friendship events are hilarius.

This is one of those games I’m highly indifferent about. Looking back, I wouldn’t call this game a bad game at all, in fact I quite enjoyed it. The “story” is comprised of four short stories with some (easy) fights peppered in that expand the lore in the naruto world through the story of the Akatsuki, Itachi and Shisui, a unique story about the new character “Mecha Naruto”, along with a 10 minute movie about team Minato which I quite enjoyed. Overall, this will take maybe 2-3 hours to complete. Which is quite a bit less than I’d expect for a game with such a steep price tag. The replay value is unfortunately nonexistant unless you are looking for the two achievements given for achieving S ranking on the Itachi and Akatsuki mini story lines. However, if you didn’t already get these achievements on your first playthrough as these fights are quite easy, you will without a doubt get it on your second. There is also the “Ninja world tournament mode” which I enjoyed quite a bit. In this mode, you can select a character of your choosing (with the exception of all the young characters, which kinda sucks) and duke it out in a four-player brawl against NPCs. Unfortunately, there is no online mode for this. This is really awful since like the rest of the NPCs, they are quite easy to defeat, and offer no real challenge. I will admit by the S+ tournament I was sweating a bit at the intensity, but the difficulty is entirely due to major NPC buffs in the form of a constant “true awakening form” and not a more advanced AI. That being said, I still won it on my first go-around which really ruins the fun of the game. This will most likely take about 5-6 hours to complete (basing off my own time). And overall, you’ll get about 7-9 hours of gameplay out of the story if you play to completion. Such a small playtime leaves something of a bitter taste in my mouth considering the price tag of this game. However, if you’re seeing my play time, you’ll notice I have 100+ hours in this game as of writing this review. This is due to this games' bread and butter, the online mode. However, unfortunately enough for the online mode, the online community has depleted in the two months since this game has come out. This has made finding someone to fight almost a chore and you really have to just open the game and cross your fingers that you’ll find someone. Speaking from personal experience, now that the game is about 2 months after launch, it is a very common occurence that you will find noone to battle.Near the games' launch, the online was solid and all you had to worry about was a tiny bit of lag since so many people were on the servers. However, even now that not so many people are using the servers, the lag is still existant if not worse. This is a huge no-no in my opinion for a 1v1 fighter to have any form of lag. Especially to the point of making the game near unplayable at points. This raises a secondary issue in the fact that even if you manage to find someone to play against, that person might have a laggy connection and make your game either near impossible to play, or make your game crash entirely. In total, this game was very fun. But now that the main focus of this game, the online, has fallen into an abyss, I would advise against purchasing this game. Still, for all the fun I had, I think this game is great. 8/10, buy it if you have a time machine or you love wasting money for a couple hours of fun.

I know the game looks like retro puke, but I enjoyed playing it from start to finish. The developer did a good job with extra content, such as unlockable characters, skins, and bonus stages. Honestly, the biggest problem here is not the aesthetic or platforming sections, it’s the lack of partial controller support. The gameplay is very basic, most of the enemies die from one attack - feels like an early Shinobi game which I do not mind. It takes about 2-3 hours to complete the story on normal difficulty; however, you won’t be able to get all of the extra content on the first playthrough. Even though the game is somewhat trashy, suffering from occasional hit-box and platforming issues, it’s kinda fun due to cheesy cutscenes and weird enemy design. There are some power-ups that you can get but they really don’t add a lot of depth to the game, you just run out of ammo too quickly. It’s not too difficult and the settings allow you to adjust some features in order to make it easier, but it’s just challenging enough to be entertaining. Lastly, the game had a few different composers, which would explain why soundtrack quality goes up and down.

JUST Finished it 100%. 26/24 sushis (cause I think I found 2 extras and missed one along the way, so i think could have been even 27/24). I bought it in like 2017 and finished it in 2021 , i’ve spent like 40 hours on it, and it’s truly wonderful. The “rage” aspect of it comes in the controls. They are very much seemingly intentionally bad and unpredictable controls that make the platforming hell on earth. But after a while (or , in my case, a few years) you get so used to the controls that you start trying alternative ways to platform just for the fun of it. Controls and gameplay aside, the dialogue is pretty funny. Afterall, the game is called 2 Ninjas 1 Cup, so it is supposed to be a comedy game, and it’s pretty good at that. I personally found it pretty funny and had a chuckle or 2 over the cutscenes. Worth every second of those 40 hours i’ve spent playing it, and I probably will now start speedrunning it cause I love this game so much. Incase the developer happens to read this, THANK YOU! Wonderful game.

dont let the silliness fool you. you might see some crummy, almost quaint pixel graphics. you might see some over-the-top antics. you might hear some weird and funny voice-acting. and you might have even read the summary, stating how stupid the game is. but again, dont let it cloud your judgement just yet.

while the game is very simple in nature, consisting only of movements and 2 buttons, it’s a fairly decent game, and a pretty tough platformer. not the hardest i’ve encountered; it’s challenging, but fair enough that it doesnt require such intricate microscopic precision to clear the stages. with a bit of practice and good timing, you could pass just about all obstacles.

Just a heads up:

So after 100% completion of the game, i decided to write a review. This will contain spoilers for both gameplay and story. I recommend you should go in blind, because the game has a nice twist around 2-3 hours in the game. The story is not the best, but it is interesting anyway. This my opinion, so you can disagree with me, and that’s fine. So let’s begin!

Gameplay:

The Messenger is a pretty good platformer. In the second half of the game, it transforms into a metroidvania. But you probably knew that.

Real player with 20.6 hrs in game

The Messenger is a great platformer / metroidvania with retro aesthetics but a very modern level of polish, fluidity and user-friendliness. It features a rather unique take on a typical double jump called “cloudstepping” that recovers your jump when you hit an enemy, a projectile or an object before landing, allowing to jump again and again and again if you manage to, thus staying in the air for a long time and feeling like a cool ninja.

Another unusual trick of this game is that it consists of two distinct halves (though it’s not a 50/50 split in terms of runtime, more like 40/60 or even 30/70, but it’s still sort of like Act 1 and Act 2). The first one plays like a strictly linear, “keep moving to the right” platformer, while the second one lets you freely roam the old locations and discover their new secrets (as well as paths to some new locations). Metroidvania elements are still pretty light here, and you’re unlikely to get lost or to discover something wholly unexpected, but it does add a fair sense of exploration. I would agree with a common complaint about mild repetitiveness, though, as fast travel points are scarce and the map is not very interconnected, which leaves you to go through some parts over and over again.

“…it’s built around a fantastic and incredibly fun core that is unlike anything else out there and I hope to see more DLC, or even a sequel, in the future. It hooked me pretty badly – I just couldn’t get enough. I loved waiting for my moment to strike, then pulling off the perfect execution of teleports and takedowns, only to fade back into the shadows before anybody saw, or even fixing a mistake swiftly by taking out any alerted guards with precise ferocity.”

KUNAI

KUNAI

The art style is pretty nice, and the music is decent, but other than those things, there isn’t much going for this metroidvania. If you’re hoping for a good story, look elsewhere; this tale is your bog-standard rebels fighting against a big bad (the oddly named Lemonkus) in some sort of robot-dominated post-apocalyptic future, and the player character is the Chosen One. There’s a few nice gags, but in general, the story isn’t anything particularly memorable.

Some other reviews have mentioned the backtracking being annoying and oh boy, is it ever. There is quite a lot of it, plus thanks in part to the muted color scheme, many areas can feel samey after awhile. While backtracking is a key part of many metroidvanias, it feels a bit excessive here. On top of that, not only are many hidden rooms (themselves frequently samey) tough to find, but so are some of those that you need to get through in order to continue on with the story. Part of this is because of the “room” format; for example, a block you need to attach to with your kunai to progress could be just out of sight, but you won’t be able to see it by jumping and forcing the map to scroll up… because it’s in the next room. The area I’m referring to was so frustrating that I had to look up a Let’s Play to get a hint as to where to go next. Oh, and there are also a couple of areas which become inaccessible after beating their bosses, so good luck with those to any completionists out there.

KUNAI is a side-scrolling action-packed 2D platformer with a bit of metroidvania mixed in as well. Some hidden rooms with treasures, special weapons, H.A.T.S. you can wear, and more! The fluidity on controller was really exceptional as well, so I’m quite happy with my overall experience playing through it.

TLDR: This is a QTE platform runner. Feels broken. Major design issues. Outcompeted by better QTE games or better runners.

Feels like a flash game. The game is zoomed out and should allow for good visibility. The Xbox360 pad is somehow not correctly implemented. Getting through menus and controlling anything felt really janky. Jumping felt imprecise. Pushing the appropriately colored faceplate buttons to dispatch foes as you meet them did not recognize inputs.

A fantastic concept with an enormous capacity for world-building!

The closest I can come comparing it to anything else is by describing it as a Metroidvania Little Big Planet. There is a story mode, but the user-created maps are the big draw, in my opinion. To date, there are over 2,000 individual stages, each with their own unique charm and difficulty.

You can build and play parkour challenges, combat stages, or story-driven puzzles. You can create pixel art. Make it easy, make it difficult, make it funny, sad, or scary. The possibilities are endless.

Real player with 87.4 hrs in game

Below Kryll is a deceptively simple yet innovative platformer with a solid community that just never quite found its niche.

Building the game around user-created levels was a gamble that paid off for the developers. There’s often a real Jekyll/Hyde quality to homemade content, but the levels in Below Kryll are consistent. They vary from extremely technical and difficult platforming challenges to exhibitions of surprisingly sophisticated art and music. User tags make it easy for each player to find levels which suit their own play styles.
