(Don’t Fear) The Templar

It took playing the recent Quake remaster, but now I get it.

It’s good. Nay, ace. No doubt about it. If it wasn’t up against the stiff competition that is the years upon years of high quality ‘boomer’ shooters, this would be a completely unqualified early access recommendation.

Ultrakill, Ion Fury, Post Void, Project Warlock 1 + II, Amid Evil, DUSK, HROT, Maximum Action, GTTOD, Prodeus, Cultic, etc - be they full games, early access, or just demos, the retro, ‘boomer’ shooter genre really is booming. I also cannot wait for the likes of Into the Pit, Fortune’s Run, and Forgive Me Father. In fact, there are so many that even when I say that I’d place this firmly mid-list it’s not even that damning.

TLDR; If you like retro shooter gameplay, and would like to have fun, buy it now!

I will just start listing what comes to mind, that makes me love this game, then write some experiences from my first 8 hours of playing on the hardest difficulty so far. Smooth movement with air controll using the mouse, running feels similar to classic doom (taking a short time to reach full speed), satisfying meaty gun sounds and very good feedback with lots of gore, build variety that actually changes gameplay, bullet time, stylish awesome visuals, amazing soundtrack, atmosphere, very good enemy and level design, exploration with rewarding secrets to find, weapon swapping combos combined with positioning during combat.

Shodo

Shodo

Note: This game is very much alpha. All features shown in gameplay are currently accessible, and playable. However it is still pretty buggy, so heads up!

Shodō is a VR game where players fight in a 5v5 battle of chaos magic, in the martial art of their own design.

In this universe you must work for your power. No cheap fireballs, no facerolling, no mana resource to constrain you.

The raw power of your Sigil is dependent on both how complex it is, and how accurately you can execute it in the heat of battle.

Build your magic art to match your personality - do you like fast paced, rapid attacks that overwhelm your enemy? Opt for flow casting, which minimizes casting time and maximizes attack rate.

Or perhaps you would rather forge a weapon no other can destroy, that will instantly kill whatever it touches - at the expense of an intricate, complex sigil.

Enter the world of Shodō and experience for yourself, psychic abilities that come at a real mental cost. Become the protagonist, the master of your art, and carve your path into the history of this environment of controlled chaos.

Boomerang X

Boomerang X

Boomerang X is an insanely fast paced fling and zing game.

I see a lot of people leaving reviews saying that they are upset with the fact the base game takes only 2 hours to beat.

What they always fail to mention is that those 2 hours are packed to the brim with just about all the content you need. The arguably short playtime required means the game will never feel dull and every 10 minutes or so you will be introduce with a new environment, possibly new ability, and more knowledge on how to beat the next level. It’s addicting to go through the motions of progressing in this game which is why I think it’s so appealing to speedrunning.

Real player with 48.2 hrs in game

$20 for such a short game is fairly steep (1-3 hours with New Game+), so I can only recommend this game to anyone interested in speed running and gyro. I’d honestly put this game at $5 - $10 max regardless of it being a speed run game. The only reason I paid the full $20 was because of Flick Stick.

An issue I’ve seen brought up is that Flux (slow motion) is too strong. You can use it every time you throw the boomerang. This feels like it was balanced for New Game+ as enemy density basically forces you to constantly use it. Since there is a super meter in the game (Comet Mode), I think there is an obvious solution. Make it so taking out enemies not only fills Comet Mode but using Flux will also drain it. Since the game was made for speed running though, I don’t think any changes will be made to Flux.

Ninja Legends

I absolutely recommend this game, but it’s not going to be for people who are looking for realistic sword fighting or role playing. For me, I was attracted to the idea of being a ridiculously strong ninja in VR, and just creating a bloodbath destroying enemies. This is normal, right? Anyway, the game delivered.

It has satisfying slashing, stabbing, and blocking but it isn’t trying to simulate real-life combat. The game has a story but its not the focal point, and its pretty obvious where the devs' priorities were. It is an arcade style action game. I was a beta tester for the game, but I liked the game enough to buy it in early access and I play it way more than I should.

Wow, I can’t recommend this game enough. I have to admit that the experience started off a bit slow for me, but after I got through the first few levels, unlocked some weapons and moved up in difficulty (I’ve been playing mostly Master difficulty) the experience has been AMAZING. I just love the feeling of standing my ground and fighting tons of ninjas for all over the place, I feel like I’m in an insane ninja action movie! My favorite levels by far are the 360 degree levels where the enemies attack from all sides, I’ve replayed those levels countless times trying to get three stars on them (it’s so hard!). Another thing I love is the fact that you keep unlocking weapons and special powers throughout the game, so replaying the levels with different weapons gives it an entirely different experience. And how can I not mention what a freakin' workout this is! If you need a good 20-30 minute cardio workout, look no further (just make sure to have a towel handy).

Red Ronin

Red Ronin

Imagine Hotline Miami or maybe Katana Zero being a turn based tactical puzzler. That is what Red Ronin actually does. And it does it very well.

The main concept of the game is very interesting. Similarly to the above mentioned titles in Red Ronin every level is you fighting a couple of enemies, you must kill them all to proceed and both you and them die in one hit. However both you and your enemies move in a turn based way and you must outmaneuver them and kill them one by one avoiding putting yourself in a vulnerable position. That is not all, your character does not actually moves - instead she dashes with no distance limitations, only stopping by hitting an obstacle. This can be advantageous as you can strike your foes and instantly be so far away that they won’t be able to reach you but at the same time abusing it too much may end up with you having no place do dash but right into your own death.

Summarized review below!

Turn-based tactical dash n’ slash with a Hotline Miami aesthetic, that’s what you can expect from Red Ronin. It’s a neat little indie game developed over the last two years by one dude out of Brazil.

Note: Trimmed review to fit character limit, check video for full version!

Gameplay:

Red Ronin may look like a mashup of genres, but at its core, it’s actually a puzzle game. You’re tasked with clearing each room of enemies and reaching the exit without getting hit. Moving in one direction moves you all the way until you hit a wall and you’ll have to take advantage of this in order to dispatch of each enemy. Seems simple, but this is by no means an easy game. In fact, it’s one of the hardest puzzles games I’ve played in quite some time.

TimeTekker

TimeTekker

TimeTekker is a fun little (fixed-screen) arcade-style bullet-hell arena-survival game in which you play as a Space Ninja who has the ability to deflect enemy projectiles and slow down time.

The game has absolutely no story, whatsoever, and that is reflective of its arcade game nature. It is a game meant for the player to jump in and play, no questions asked.

Really love this game so far, it hits that perfect difficulty level for me as a 27 year old gamer. It’s more about brains then reflexes in otherwords!

The game seems hard at first, but as you get better Merciless becomes the perfect amount of Difficulty for extended play. (start out on easy/brutal until you get used to it)

In a nutshell, Timetekker has simple yet satisfying gameplay. Shoot, dodge, slow down time. On a deeper level you will need to be learning new strategies to make it onto the top of the leaderboard, ie. moving after shooting since time resumes after firing.

So overall this game have very great potenial, but still has a few bugs that need to worked out. Like when I faced the first boss( which took me like 100 tried to beat on hero diff) I got it to one of its health stops when it goes invisible, and it was stuck in invulnerable state until I died which sucked because I was close to beating it. 2nd: There could be some kind of combo list. I noticed that there were times when my melees would turn red then purple ( I came to understand that purple stuns thing) but I had no clue how I performed said combo. 3rd: I feel there should be an option to what weapons I pick up. Sometimes I like using 4 rocket launchers or 4 assault rifles. 4th: Materials should be a bit easier to understand how to get them, I think I ran around the 1st open area for about an hour trying to figure out where to get the Mats to make a fusion key or scanner. 5th: I find it almost impossible to dodge enemies that spawn right above you and they use an attack and next thing you know you have to restart your combo (this happens even though I am constantly on the move). Above all I love the difficulty of the game, the back story could use some work but over all enjoyable. I really look foward to seeing the full release of this game. It has my support. When I showed some of my friends at work they were mind blown in a sense. But I dont like how people compare it to warframe. I see the simiularities but I think they are on 2 totally different levels.

Backed on Kickstarter

This game was tailored for people that 1. do not have epilepsy. 2. can handle sensory overload: the bullet hell junkies, the DMC and Nier: Automata fans, the Touhou addicts.

  • The screen will fill with enemies, your decisions within seconds will either result in the next wave of enemies or result in your death.

  • You must be mobile; yes, Nelo is fast, but the Nightsithe are just as fast.

  • Your enemies will reflect your damage back at you, dodge your attacks, teleport away or towards you, and even bullrush you.

personally i love this game i have spent well over 100 hours and i still play it almost every day. it takes some time to learn the controls and even longer to master. the game is still very early in its development and i know that there is lots of stuff coming in the future like diving and more props to play around with. I would 100% recommend using a gamepad for this game otherwise its going to be very hard to play.

What an amazing game.

I’ve been looking for a gymnastics physics game that allows you to really grind and develop skills/routines. The real game begins when you start playing the user created levels from the workshop. The discord community is great an ultimately is the game of choice for gymnasts and gymnastics fanatics alike. I’ve waited so long for a game like this, and I’m so happy it came.

Sairento VR delivers fast paced, yet strategic sword-and-gun gameplay that really allows a players individual style to shine through. Unrestricted to ‘classes’, players level up and can diversify in any element they wish… gunplay, swordplay, slo-mo… by placing skillpoints you can improve bullet-time duration, durability, special skills such as bullet reflection and even force-wave katana slash capabilites. The diversity of character builds is seemingly limitless with weapon and armor customisations, supported by a Diablo-esque loot grind.

In short, this game epitomizes for me the road ahead for VR and has been my most fulfilling VR experience to date.

LOCOMOTION: A superb game that’s growing sometimes by the day, no VR game has come close to Sairento’s brilliant movement mechanics, allowing brilliant jumps, slides, wall runs and teleportations all with the added benefit of having bullet time at your whim and command.

WEAPONS: A vast array of melee, projectiles and firearms allow you to personalise your specific ninja combat strategy. Specific teired relics allow further customization of how each weapon behaves and gives you a fair amount of power to tweak your loadout. Armour has a similar mechanic: eg. boots that give you an extra jump if you want to be above the fray spaying bullets down, or wall sticky boots that allow you to gain a static vantage point and snipe.
