Sea Legends

Sea Legends

Amazing. Was a big fan of this game when it just came out back in the 90s. Despite the absolutely horrible (by modern standards) graphics, the gameplay is great. REALLY needs a companion instructional guide though, on how to play :)

There is a Russian guide on the web (original game is by a Russian studio), which is fine for me, but I coudn’t find an English one. Maybe I will write one.

In my view, this is the best naval battle game ever made. If you liked “Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag” and want more ships, trading & more details to the naval battles, then this game is for you.

I like the freedom to just do what ever you like in the game as far as pirating/trading/missions. And the open world aspect and the way you can capture ships to upgrade/sell or add to your own fleet.

Yes it’s old, but it places its emphasis in sea battles on sailing and strategy. You can’t just load guns in 3 seconds and then switch from solid balls to grapeshot without going through another reload. Turn rate and speed are crucial to monitor. And the story line is fun, too.

Fascinating game. It was great years ago, and I finished it again with great pleasure nowadays. And that’s not a call of nostalgia. There are many old games which didn’t age well, but I can’t say such a thing about this one. Yes, it’s graphics will not impress you these days and some gameplay mechanics are rather old. But the game brings an enthralling non linear story, great music and atmosphere as well as interesting albeit little clunky gameplay.

The game is 20 years old, but it has unique walkthrough for 4 different nations and unique dialogs for all characters, not just secondary ones, but even unimportant ones. For example, there is no copy-cat tavern keepers or store owners with standard phrases. Each one has his own character, story or even quest. And a word about quests. There is no copy-paste quests as well. Each one is unique and there is a lot of them. Believe or not, but it is the only game where I still remember the names of most of the characters after so many years.

The Ambience alone is worth downloading this game. It sounds very calming and if you love the ocean you will like this game. There isn’t much going on in this game yet, but somehow it doesn’t suffer from that. If you need explosions and constant gun fighting, then you probably won’t look twice at downloading this as it isn’t for you. If you want a lite island exploration game that is also about crafting and fighting off sharks while diving for treasure, and you don’t want to pay for it, then this IS for you.

The prologue appears to be the same as the demo, which I’ve played for about 3.5 hours. It’s definitely a fun prologue, though there isn’t a ton to do outside of the story. There are some chests to find and loot, but ultimately, there isn’t anything worth buying with your booty. There is a scrap merchant who sells ship parts, but no ships that you can repair/build outside of the raft, which degrades quickly. Having a couple islands to sail to and a ship would go a long way, though I suspect that will be a motivation to buy the full game.

Blackwake

Blackwake

Pros:

  • frequent updates, always something new (weapons, ships, gamemodes, maps, CANNONS… and AMMO FOR CANNONS)

  • fun gameplay

  • naval combat is well done

  • pvp combat is good, melee is smart, guns will often kill you instantly

  • attack/deffend fortresses (if you capture the enemy fortress you win, when you are defending and you know where all the guns are you may survive)

  • loadout selection, a lot of muskets (4), pistols (5), melee (6), special (4)

  • chat, voice chat (team, faction, global, proximity variants)

“I will be damned if I go with another early access game, I will rather eat paper from this notebook”

Ok, now I am chewing on a paper but I’m still satisfied by this game! Yay!

Blackwake is interesting multiplayer naval FPS that lend you feeling of member of Navy or life of a pirate (arrr matey, sorry, i had to). The game basically provide ship and sea and you and your crew (that are players or you are part of the crew under captain) try to get opposition team down the tickets or run out of suplies.

I was extremely excited for this game when it was announced. It is progressing and somewhat becoming more playable, but to be honest it’s extremely unfinished and frustrating at this point. Worth picking up if you don’t mind waiting for the full experience and playing casually.

Pros:

-The graphics are decent, and there are lots of great aesthetics

-In-depth crew management system with feudal elements

-Very visceral combat elements- you will die, you will lose men, you will encounter ships far more powerful than you that will squish you like a bug

EDIT

Unfortunately, I feel compelled to change my thumbs up to a thumbs down. At the moment, this game is straight up abandoned. There has been one patch since I originally reviewed this game almost 2 years ago, and that one patch was simply increasing ship hold space (i.e. changing some numbers). The Discord is basically dead. Someone will ask the devs if they have any news or updates and a week later get a simple “not right now, sorry” in response. It has been that way for several several months. Supposedly the publisher pulled their funding so devs are basically sitting on their hands waiting for a load of cash to fall out of the sky.

Blood and Gold: Caribbean!

Tl&dr: whatever you expect from this game (M&B battle style, trading), search for it somewhere else, it is not difficult to find something better.

Mount & Blade engine, extended trading system, naval combat, main story… sounds perfect, what could go wrong? These were my thoughts when I bought this game and I got my answer very quick.. too quick. Everything can go wrong.

Honestly, it feels like someone took Mount & Blade, Sid Meier’s Pirates and Port Royale, stripped all the good parts from all these games and then mashed them together.

Ok, so my review is basically a bug list that needs fixing from the devs:

Crashes when trying to retreat during special missions. Being able to see the battle play out is ok, but your maps often mess up the pathing, and then it can take forever. There’s no way back to the menu screen then.

Not being able to control your men during special missions. If you ask me to do a 31 v 31 skirmish with native gear against armed enemies, then letting me use the basic mount and blade commands would be nice
