It’s a game, jk. Only on the second level so far and the vertical section messes me up a bit since it’s possible to do by going to far in both directions. The screen moves while the character has to survive and get to the end at the cameras pace. only like $3 and it’s good I would recommend it. Reminds me of a mobile game, could probably be ported there but don’t know how.

Best game of the year so far, blows werewolf action game out of the water with this visceral experience that will have you come back and back again.

Escape from DuFo

Good short game. It only took about 10 minutes to complete but I enjoyed it quite a bit and wished it was a full game. It looked good and ran great plus the puzzles were pretty decent. Overall for less than a $1 on sale I would recommend checking it out. If you want to see some game play you can check out my play through below.

Rising - Hungry Lizard

Rising - Hungry Lizard

Have Courage, Have Rage

Rising is a survival game in 8bit pixel art which will ultimately comprise multiple episodes, each one being autonomous and depicting a unique story, through the game, a la Another World (Eric Chahi). Set in nature, inspired by various trips in Brazil, Africa, India, France, Japan or Turkey, each episode will tell the quest for life of a living form on earth or beyond.

Episode #1 : Hungry Lizard

Play a lizard aiming to survive in a dangerous natural world. The lizard can eat butterflies and worms but has to prevent parrots’ attacks. He can hide, stop his movements and choose to eat his prey at the most precise moment. A satiety bar forces him to consistently eat preys. You only use the directional pad of the keyboard to navigate through the map, but the physic is precise and the lizard can move freely and stick on walls or trees to find the ideal path for his quest. It’s a cruel world and each action has to be chosen within the right moment of significance. Dedicate yourself entirely to sacrificing the flux of time for the right moment.

Hungry Lizard is a haiku

Life consists of rare, isolated moments of the greatest significance, and of innumerably many intervals, during which at best the silhouettes of those moments hover about us. Hungry Lizard consciously evokes the presence by the absence, with its pixel art graphics and sound design elegantly blended into a Zen, minimal and spatial floating world.

Truth lies in one single moment

Hungry Lizard is an arcade game and must be played as such. You can play Hungry Lizard slowly, and actually make a better score in staying in the first zone. You can optimize each movement. You don’t need to see the ending even though the game has a beautiful one. The concept is to continue playing, short or long runs, few or many points, the beauty is there nonetheless. You will eventually die. You can restart the game or let it run for itself and take a breath, enjoy the graphics, the music, the physic, because it runs for itself marvelously. Each death is different and demands a moment of recollection and contemplation. Time is therefore dedicated to seeing and experiencing.

What is essential is the isolated moment and not what comes before and after.

In Hungry Lizard, it feels like we are seeing the world for the first time. Everything is so beautiful all at once. From so many angles.

The Long Gate

The Long Gate

The first thing you notice about this game is the grandeur and mystery of its environment, and it doesn’t ever let up; as I moved through the different sections of the game I marveled at the design of the machinery and rooms. The soundtrack provides an excellent backdrop to levels that are variously organic, mechanical, dark, and alien. The puzzles themselves are unlike anything I’ve seen in a game before. Built on the simple (and very much real) principles of electricity, the puzzles quickly take you from clicking on/off switches to troubleshooting gigantic electromechanical computers. Sometimes the goal is clear, other times not so much. This forced me to experiment and learn the principles before I could really solve anything complicated. The learning curve steps up quite a bit at some points, but not unreasonably so. A very satisfying challenge with plenty of those “oh I get it now” dopamine hits. Highly recommended.

Ok, so I’ve just finished the game for the first time (replaying soon because I still need that sweet, sweet 100% engineer mode achievement!) but I wanted to get my immediate feedback at 14.4hrs in onto paper :P

Firstly, a bit of my background. I’m a researcher in Computational Chemistry, and have a keen interest in quantum computing and electronics. I mention this as I think I’m not your typical audience, as not every gamer will have my experience with these kinds of things.

Onto the review! Spoilers abound from here on out so don’t read on if you care about those!

Agartha

Agartha

You’re going to spend 30 minutes playing all the levels and then hit a brick wall of waiting for 10 minutes for lava pools to drain then die when you touch a single orange pixel.

10 out of the 12 hours of this game were watching lava move out of the way to get to an exit.

There’s waaaay too much lava that just takes so long to get around. Characters are pretty one sided. you’ll use Ninja, Esper, and wizard almost every level. Farmer is an absolutely useless character. He can’t angle his pick upwards so i can only go down when mining. Robots useless because he can’t jump worth shit and any level you would use oil to get yourself up there’s lava to burn it. his mining style leaves him totally exposed. alchemist has NO mobility and there’s no level that you need to turn anything into lava. Geomancer has no mobility either and his abilities are slow to effect and only has like 2 good uses if you want to turn a large area cold or hot. Also his mining leaves him exposed to any lava.

If you like exploring and puzzles, I would recommend this game. I took around 8ish hours to 100% the game.

Good things:

  • Lots of variety in characters. Each character has their own playstyles. I used Esper the most, the teleport ability is helpful (and might be a little bit OP).

  • Exploring and finding secret paths is fun. In some stages there is more than 1 exit, so it presents are further challenge to find these hidden exits.

  • Object physics is great. If you burn grass or oil, then it will burn away or if you freeze water or lava, they will turn to their solid countertypes. This makes the puzzles interesting and fun to figure out.
