Snowstorm of despair

Snowstorm of despair

In this game you have to survive in a severe winter, while waiting for salvation.

Survive in a snowstorm

You and your team need to keep the flame in the fireplace. Look for firewood and fuel the flame or you will have to put it in again.

Cooperation or betrayal?

Only you can decide which side to choose. Will you work with your team or betray them when you have a chance? Maybe, you are a good orator and want to build a good trustworthy team? Or do you prefer to create tension and distrust? Anyway, it is you who makes the final decision.

Features of survival

Appearing in a cosy home with your unlucky teammates, you have to find a way out and collect wood for the fireplace to get warm (you don’t want to freeze to death, do you?). Also, you’ll come across some useful items such as food and additional clothes. But make sure that you’re not lost while searching the way to other houses.

What is hiding in the forest?

Yes, there are “human-monsters”, but also there are ghosts of darkness, which are also dangerous. You thought it would be easy, didn’t you?

Hog Hunter 2021

Hog Hunter 2021

I’d recommend this game, it is a nice hunting game with some horror.

Your goal is simple hunt hogs however as you progress through the environment you’ll discover there is more to it.

The game does a good job with the immersion and the ambiance with the music and the retro artstyle which gives it an unsettling creepy vibe, with its fog and the ominous silence.

The controls are simple but effective.

It’s relatively short but it’s intended for a better experience and it’s free.

There are also four differents endings based on your approach of the game.

moth interactive’s “hog hunter” (steam,2021) is certainly a game. these individuals in the reviews might have you believe that this is some silly game to “crank one’s hog” to. i downloaded this program in the hopes that i would have something silly and as the kids say “cringe”. in this regard, hog hunter (steam, 2021) was a disappointment.

what i came face to face with was a game that was an absolute masterpiece. i will be forever effected by the outcome of this great work of fiction. as someone who has played such games as ‘leenie boog demo’, and ‘riding club championships’, hog hunter (steam, 2021) left me feeling a bit out of my comfort zone, but i was warmly welcomed by the atmosphere and realistic hogs.

Play as a young child waking up in the middle of a deep forest at dusk, confused but not completely alone. In classic side-scrolling adventure fashion, you will need to explore and navigate your way back home before you freeze to death in the pouring rain. Or is there more to discover?

  • Decisions, Decisions - Help the creepy inhabitants of the forest in order to get help in return, or you could hinder them…

  • Manage Inventory - Find all the items you can, any of them may be of use, but try not to carry too much.

  • New Experiences - Navigate through a different procedurally-generated world on each playthrough.

  • Multiple endings - See if you can find them all. There isn’t only one path back home, or maybe, home isn’t exactly what you believe it to be?

Through the Woods

Through the Woods

The air is cold, the night is dark, and the woods are thick. Here my friend, cozy on up to my campfire, and let me tell you a tale. It’s a dark and unsettling one, so best cling tightly to your sweater and scarf and, whatever you do, don’t look too closely into the fire, for fear of what might lurk deep within the cinders…

I own a laptop. Actually, I own three laptops, but the one I use for Steam purposes is pretty powerful and can play, y’know, almost all those games which are notoriously troublesome on other people’s DESKtops - including AAA games like The Evil Within - with little to no worries. Yet for some strange reason, this new indie release is the first game I’ve had to dial down to 1280 X 720 and Low quality.

“It’s the silence that scares me. It’s the blank page on which I can write my own fears. The spirits of the dead have nothing on it. The dead one tried to show me hell, but it was a pale imitation of the horror I can paint on the darkness in a quiet moment.” Mark Lawrence

Through the Woods is a third person horror, adventure by Antagonist (published by 1C Company). The game is set in a forest on the shores of Norway, and is heavily influenced by Norse mythology and folklore, which it also takes some of its monsters from. Searching the woods for your son, you play as a female protagonist who is deceptively complex. At first, she evokes sympathy but this wanes as we discover more about her and her past through encounters and triggered dialogue in a kind of reverse character development. Unfortunately, I did occasionally find myself being dragged out of the narrative by questionable dialogue and flat delivery. I guess things could have got lost in translation from the original Norweigan but I played the version after the mother’s voice had been rerecorded with a new actor.

They Breathe

They Breathe

What a grim and dark plot for such a cute frog! Play as a frog named Glenn, as you swim into the depths of the water until you reach the bottom, finding waves of bubbles, frogs that need oxygen, as well as some … pretty messed-up looking monsters, all concluded with a final boss. Saving your froggie friends proves to be a very high priority, as there is an achievement for saving all frogs, as well as reducing the chances of more monster spawns. Gathering oxygen is also a higher priority, as it saves you, other frogs and destroys several enemies. The overall difficult of the game ranges from Easy-to-medium. There are only 3 types of enemies you have to overcome, and the boss is basically slowly dying as long as you stay alive in the final wave to the end. Simple AWSD for movement and Space key to dash.

What an odd and somewhat surreal game. I found it looking through a list of summer sales, the silly looking banner grabbing my attention. When I noticed it was only something like $0.60 I thought, “Why the heck not”. Honestly, I got what I paid for - whatever you decide on whether or not to get this at the end of this review, don’t pay the $2. That may not sound like much money, but this game is not worth full price.

Anyway, it’s.. well, I wouldn’t necessarily call it good, but it’s oddly kind of zen? The controls are clunky (I used a 360 controller, I wouldn’t recommend the keyboard) and often frustraing to handle, and the game basically just throws you in with no explanation. In a modern age spoiled by tutorials, it was an odd feeling flailing about trying to figure out the controls and how to deal with the enemies. The game only takes about 20-30 minutes or so to play (unless you’re a completionist like me trying to go the extra miles for achievements) and is a series of waves where you have to defeat the enemies and save other frogs (assuming the enemies don’t kill them first). Your health is gauged by how much breath you have, breathing air bubbles or the last gasps of air from enemies. There’s no meter for this, instead the frog changes color and starts to spit bloodied bubbles to indicate its slowly drowning. Graphically I personally felt it looked somewhat juvenile, what may have been the point, though the frog sprites in particular weirded me out over the fact it looks like a double amputee missing its front legs. The music I felt was the best part. It’s very calming but also eerie. Very good for atmosphere.

Great little experience, really enjoyed it. I would love to see this explored a little more. I recomend giving it a play, just make sure to check the cars hood / bonnet when you start, almost missed it :)

so i figured a game for $3.99 can’t be very good. well, was i wrong! one of the best games i’ve played at any price, not based on anything but story and ending. those two things were perfect!

controls are very very simple, graphics ok. it took me 2.7 hours to finish, but i’m old, so….

there are a very few shock scares in the game, which actually gave me chills, once went all the way through me. if you pay attention to the subtle clues in the game, i’m sure you could finish it faster than i did.

Rooten

Nice little game with a great narrative and atmosphere reminiscent of the Darkwood or Annihilation (the movie).

It’s definitely worth playing if you like the dense forest mood, meditative walks in the fog, and living mushrooms…

Rooten is a great horror adventure. It’s not that scary, but it has a great mood & exploring gameplay. I’m a big fan of the in-game mechanic of time that goes by itself and brings feel of a daily routine that gets worse every day. In the first days it feels like there’s too much time for you, but you’ll lose that feeling as the game progress. Art somehow reminded me Don’t Starve in a great way, even though it’s different styles, but I like how 2D and 3D are mixed. The sound design is amazing and very immersive.

2/10

Being a fan of horror games and someone who likes to support small developers - and also keeping in mind this game was made with GameGuru -, I really wanted to come here and recommend this game.

Unfortunately, I can’t.

The rain sound effect right at the beginning loops in such a way that you can tell when it loops, as there’s a fraction of a second where the sound pauses. The loading screens take WAY too long to load and it completely breaks the game’s immersion.

But the game’s biggest flaw is that it just… Lacks content. It’s incredibly short and it really has nothing to it. No compelling story, no challenge level, no puzzles, nothing. You really just find keys to doors, avoid some few and incredibly easy to avoid hazards and that’s it. Also, your actions don’t affect the ending, because you literally get to a part where it says “choose your end”.

TLDR: Gameguru. Short. Dead end narrative. Potential asset flip. Strongly recommended to avoid.

Review: WAY TOO LONG loading screens even on OP machine. Then game loads slow moving star wars text, this is no quality writing let me tell you. Basically just saying I used to be insane, I feel better, I got lost in the countryside. LOADING SCREEN. You are dumped on a fenced dirt road and go down the road. RUN RUN RUN RUN - RUN RUN - Game floats some text about things being SCARY or MADNESS. It makes no sense. So in your mind you replace those words with BORING: e.g. PROJECT 12 IS A GOVERNMENT PROGRAM THAT INJECTED PEOPLE TO INDUCE MADNESS = INJECT PEOPLE TO INDUCE BORING. Game makes a lot more sense after you do that. Anyways you open DOOR TO BUILDING = LOADING SCREEN. You go DOWN A SINGLE CORRIDOR = LOADING SCREEN. GO AROUND A DARK CORNER USE FLASHLIGHT OPEN DOOR = LOADING SCREEN.

An atmospheric horror game with semi-open world. You can really feel the atmosphere of loneliness. The further the better, but everything is ruined by a strange and unbalanced fight with the final boss.

Still recomended.
