This review is an analysis of how the ecology functions and entertains you. It will point out quirks that you will learn as you play for hours on end. It covers the base game-world, but the resources that you manipulate in the game has patterns and limitations, and will appear in any game module.

Working with the game ecology and finding the in and out of sustainable systems, i want to say the ecosystem is flawed, and the 2d nature of the game is part of the reason. The game life finds local maxima to survive and will burn out over time. Life in this game works like wild fire burning dry trees, leaving behind ash for the next generation to regrow. Maybe this fire analogy is an accuracy way to expect how life will NOT continue to thrive without considerable maintenance by the user to ‘fuel the fire’ of this system.

I feel funny reviewing this, since I bought it with leftover money from my Steam Wallet, but after some thought and looking at the truly nice levels that both come with the game and as fan addons I decided what the heck.

Like the game, my review will be to the point. This is an ecosystem puzzle game, and the best game your not playing yet. Yes, it has pixel graphics and not much apparent complexity. But if this digital simulation where quite as simple as it looks, I would have taken it back by now. Keeping every organism alive in any level long enough to get its journal entry is actually pretty tough. This takes tactical thinking and a degree of patience, the lucky thing being its not the kind of patience required to play a Sims game or an RPG with two much time spent going from A to B. I’d call it tactical patience, and a slight tolerance for things not going as planned. After all, if things get really hairy with that fly overpopulation, you can hit them with an asteriod.

Little Mouse’s Encyclopedia

Little Mouse’s Encyclopedia

I was conflicted on this one, whether to give a positive review or not.

First the positive notes: this is a nice educational program that helps to fill the gaps in the basics of flora and fauna.

I learned a lot of things I didn’t know, so I’m satisfied with that part of the “game”.

The graphics is fine and also the sounds, which really put you in the atmosphere of the forest, field, pond and garden.

So what is the problem? The problem is that this is not a game, lol.

This is an educational application, mostly for kids. It doesn’t offer anything else but reading.

I’ve got the game for my kid and he enjoyed it a lot. We first bought it on App Store but then I bought it here on Steam specifically to leave a review, so that games like this get better traction. If you’re a happy owner like me, I do encourage you to also support the developer in this way.

What I love about this game? It’s like a small encyclopaedia, making discovery of new facts easy and fun. I’m so, so tired of commercial mainstream “games for kids” that mostly exploit the love of children to the brands and characters already established in film/TV. Here, the game is like an open book inviting your kids to play with it in a variety of ways, always learning in the process.

Pieces of Beauty

Pieces of Beauty

For puzzle lovers and especially those who follow the work of Ohara Koson, it will be extremely interesting to have this piece in your game library. Enjoyable music, puzzle size variations, clean visuals and well-executed gameplay.

improvement points:

  • Maybe an option for those who don’t want to see the background image ready in the puzzle.

  • Bug fix in the sound, I don’t know if it happens on my machine

Yugo Puzzle

Yugo Puzzle

This is a great puzzler, the game looks like many similar games but the level design and the mechanics make this game a joy to play . Some puzzles are very hard and the developer implemented a hint system post release, I used it once because I don’t like those but I was stuck on 2 puzzles for many hrs. The developers even warn that it would be good to take breaks between puzzles and then I saw that the devs are Japanese. I can tell you after finishing this game I need a longish break from puzzlers :)

If you’ve played Jelly no Puzzle before then you know the kind of brilliant puzzles that qrostar makes, and this game is just like that. Interesting nuances in mechanics just keep unfolding as you play through the game, and it’s a thing of beauty.

Also if you know qrostar’s style then you know he’s not very gentle. There’s no throwaway levels just to ease you into a mechanic; he will throw you right in the deep end. But if you give it a shot you will see how beautiful these levels are.

A feast of a game for puzzle game lovers.

Alice Escaped!

Alice Escaped!

■ About

Alice Escaped is a 2D action and exploration game. Follow the advenctures of the two girls Usada and Kotora who wander into a strange world of grimoires, chasing after “Alice”.

What awaits them there are mysterious characters based off of Alice in Wonderland: the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and Humpty Dumpty – but are they really the enemy? And why does the White Rabbit guiding them have a zipper on his back?

Finally, who is the enigmatic girl hiding Alice in the deepest part of the world? Just why do they find themselves trapped inside, and– Oh, you’ll need to find out the rest for yourself!

■ Battle Action

The key to this game is the stylish tag team battle system! Swing Usada’s giant hammer to pulverize your enemies with powerful melee attacks, or use Kotora’s submachine gun and bombs to take enemies out from a distance. Switch between the two to chain impressive combos!

Taking out enemies builts up your Chance Gauge, which can be used to perform supporting attacks and devastating ultimate attacks. (feature not included in the demo)

The intensity builds in boss fights: whittle down their shield gauge to break their shields, letting you unleash a flurry of attacks. But beware – they’ve got a variety of powerful attacks to hit you back!

■ Characters

Usada & Kotora

Two friendly girls who have wandered into a mysterious world

White Rabbit

A strange rabbit with a zipper on his back who calls himself “Usamura-san”

Cheshire Cat

This cryptic feline appears before Usada and Kotora and enjoys testing his skills against them. Maybe he has another goal than just getting in their way…?

■ Story

One summer’s day, Usada and Kotora go to the library to do their homework. Kotora seriously gets to her studies, but Usagi has her head up in the clouds. She wanders over to a bookshed deep inside, and brings back a big, thick book.

“I found this interesting looking book!”

Kotora looks back at her quizzically. Suddenly, a slip of paper falls out from the book. The letter reads:

“Look for Alice.”

As soon as they read the words, the two are enveloped in a blinding light.

Compost

Compost

A fun little game that is a mix of tower defense and critter simulation.

There are many various critters in the game with each type having their own behavior and priorities,

some being peaceful, some preying on other types of critters, some plants having different ways to spread, some critters eating specific plants and so on, which makes for a surprising amount of artificial intelligence in the game.

You don’t control anything directly but instead are given power to generate a breeze that gently pushes stuff around.

This is a great game! A retro style with a current social feel! Some things I like about it:

1. It feel like playing one of my arcade machines

2. Who doesnt want their garden to thrive?

3. The game is explained just enough that makes you think about what you need to do in order for your garden to stay healthy

4. While there are not tons of critters/plants/baddies to understand its great fun learning how they all interact and what they do

I really do enjoy playing this game and look forward to the next round of mouse clicking madness! (thank goodness for pause!)
