Argonus and the Gods of Stone

Argonus and the Gods of Stone

Argonus and the Gods of Stone is an interesting update to the point and click adventure genre. If games like Shadowgate, Myst, or Gone Home were enjoyable for you then this may be up your alley.

Pros:

+Large island filled to the brim with Greek mythology.

+LOADS of quality voiceover work. Almost every actor was quite good to excellent.

+Clear objectives. There aren’t overly obtuse puzzles that need massive FAQs to decipher.

+Little secrets and world building scattered throughout plus nods and references to things like Shadowgate and Clash of the Titans.

You are blinded by the sun as you awake on the beach. Slowly you lift your stiff body from the sand and look around. You recognize friends and members of your crew scattered all along the beach in frozen movement. When you step closer and touch Tiphys, helmsman of the Argo, you feel the cold, rough surface of stone. Everyone you examine is petrified. Only their eyes still seem alive.

‘Argonus and the Gods of Stone’ is a first-person puzzle game that takes you back to the year 1242 BC. You are a member of the Argonauts, sailors of the Argo, led by Jason to find the Golden fleece. In case you’re old enough you probably remember old Hollywood movies telling his story. And as in the movies the game portraits many of the famous creatures. Cyclops, one eyes giants. Gorgons, snake haired woman whose gaze turns you into stone. Sirens, luring nearby sailors to shipwreck with their enchanting music and singing voices. Harpyr, half men half bird. Hydra, dragon-like serpents with venomous breath and several heads, etc.

I highly recommend this game. It is an enjoyable, relaxing cool game with fantastic graphics. It is fun to play solo or with a team of fire dogs to explore. I love the storyline and the calming music. It is fun to howl to call other fire dogs in the multi-player game or howl to receive game clues.

Super interesting. Didn’t quite get the story but I think it’s supposed to be vague in that regard. Really enjoyed the music, atmosphere and environment. I didn’t expect it to be inspiring but seeing the distant pink lights and hearing about an old family story really made me want to start brainstorming a new music project. I don’t know if any of these characters or events are real or based on real events, but I think researching it would remove its mystique, so I won’t. I played it again straight after finishing it (mainly because the ending dialogue cut out mid-way through) to see if there was anything I missed but I couldn’t find anything. A short fun little experience!

There’s a moment early on when you’re following the traditional walking simulator flow of moving from exposition drop to exposition drop that you’ll see something… weird.

And there’s a moment where you’ll get lost in the woods and stumble upon something unpleasant but unremarked upon.

And there’s a moment where you’ll realize something is extremely- well… the less said about it the better.

I really enjoyed this interactive story. The writing and voice acting is excellent and the level design is incredible. You won’t understand why I say that at first but… you will eventually.

Through the Woods

Through the Woods

The air is cold, the night is dark, and the woods are thick. Here my friend, cozy on up to my campfire, and let me tell you a tale. It’s a dark and unsettling one, so best cling tightly to your sweater and scarf and, whatever you do, don’t look too closely into the fire, for fear of what might lurk deep within the cinders…

I own a laptop. Actually, I own three laptops, but the one I use for Steam purposes is pretty powerful and can play, y’know, almost all those games which are notoriously troublesome on other people’s DESKtops - including AAA games like The Evil Within - with little to no worries. Yet for some strange reason, this new indie release is the first game I’ve had to dial down to 1280 X 720 and Low quality.

“It’s the silence that scares me. It’s the blank page on which I can write my own fears. The spirits of the dead have nothing on it. The dead one tried to show me hell, but it was a pale imitation of the horror I can paint on the darkness in a quiet moment.” Mark Lawrence

Through the Woods is a third person horror, adventure by Antagonist (published by 1C Company). The game is set in a forest on the shores of Norway, and is heavily influenced by Norse mythology and folklore, which it also takes some of its monsters from. Searching the woods for your son, you play as a female protagonist who is deceptively complex. At first, she evokes sympathy but this wanes as we discover more about her and her past through encounters and triggered dialogue in a kind of reverse character development. Unfortunately, I did occasionally find myself being dragged out of the narrative by questionable dialogue and flat delivery. I guess things could have got lost in translation from the original Norweigan but I played the version after the mother’s voice had been rerecorded with a new actor.

Theseus

Theseus

Introduction

Theseus is the latest game from indie developer, Forge Reply srl, and the developer’s first foray into VR.

You play the titular character, waking injured and with no idea of where you are, or why, in a strange realm of bloody waters and floating rubble. You limp towards a door through which a bright white light shines and find yourself in a strange, decaying labyrinth.

After wandering aimlessly for some time you discover the faint spirit of Ariadne, a woman who explains your situation. You are Theseus, trapped, like her, in the labyrinth by the minotaur, Asterion. Asterion was once the guardian of the place, but was corrupted, becoming evil. As the darkness infused him he became blind, but his other senses have been honed and he seeks you. Your only way to freedom is to reach the bright light at the centre of the labyrinth, where Ariadne is held captive.

The resolution is too low (to all Devs: let US the gamer decide how much SS (supersampling) we want!!! goddamn…), textures are mostly low quality/resolution and to the end there were some weird, minor audio issues, BUT: I actually kinda dig this game!

Combat is quite fun (not terribly hard though), third person is done exceptionally well and fit right in “VR” and the music is top notch!

Quite suspenseful at times which goes well with this more dark version of Chronos (which is by far the better, more polished game).

Jung’s Labyrinth

Jung’s Labyrinth

What an experience. Now I know what it truly means to be labyrinthine, frustrated, as the dev perhaps intended us to be, in the true nature of the journey to the centre of oneself. I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game. The images and realisations it invoked, whether directly or indirectly, were sublime. The music flowed effortlessly with the scenes, some of which where completely breathtaking–the magician’s place and the puer’s playground to mention a couple. I especially liked the Trickster part and the role it played in the game, as I personally have a troublesome relation with that archetype. It was also personally rewarding to catch the various references, as I have been reading Jung for a few years now. There is so much I wish to say about this game, and yet I shall try to contain myself. Gameplay-wise, I am lucky that my system was able to run it, and the minor bugs (‘moon jump’ during the albedo segment to name one, unless deliberate) were thankfully not troublesome at all.

Whilst there are some stylistic choices that weren’t always to my taste, this game more than makes up for it with heart and integrity. I’m not typically much of a videogame enthusiast, but occasionally something like this will catch my eye that looks interesting and immersive. And indeed it was. I found the individual habitats of the archetypes most enjoyable and was always looking forward to who I might next meet and how the archetype might be portrayed. These little individual occasions felt somewhat museum-like in tone, as though I was exploring a virtual Jung exhibition, or experiencing a kind of immersive theatre. It was clear that a lot of detailed attention had been invested in creating an individual atmosphere for each archetype encounter. I do wish though that the player could have been more involved in each of these cases - maybe more options to pursue various threads of conversation, or particular challenges one must overcome to integrate each archetype.

The most beautiful game i ever played.

More like a relaxing trip to a rural Japanese town in the 1960s. Plus a train driving simulator.

It is difficult finding the right words. Right now there is only the Japanese version released, but an English translation is planned. So right now you definitely miss the best part of the game if you can’t read Japanese. The story mode is more than just a story, it is somewhere between poetry and memories of the past.

But even if you don’t speak Japanese and always dreamed to have a time machine and go to a small Japanese village in the 1960s this is the closest you’ll ever get.

The End of the Sun is a first-person exploration and adventure game, where the story has the most important meaning, as it is set in the world of Slavic rites, beliefs, legends, and their everyday life. It is a series of mysterious events that ordinary people dealt with, as they were living in a small village where the line between myth and reality began to fade perilously.

As the Ashter (Volhv / someone like Slavic sorcerer) who is gifted with the ability to travel in time and knowledge about Navia (the space where human fates shape), following the trail of the secretive fugitive, you come to a mysterious village, but you cannot find anyone there, at least not in a way you wanted to. All you can see are burned hearths around.

A story inspired by Slavic mythology and legends. It presents the events occurring during the 4 major Slavic festivals during the 4 seasons far away from each other in time. Recreates mystical events, culture and people’s habits in an unusual way. The game is inspired by both adventure and exploration games with unorthodox riddles to solve, but the story-line is in the first place here.
