Clarevoyance

Clarevoyance

I do like the nostalgia of being back in Southwestern Nova Scotia. It’s kind of neat with the folklore twist and the questing. I appreciate the history that’s shared. I have told my kids about various bits of history from back home like Samuel de Champlain and the Expulsion. I showed them the Clare Lore that backs up the thing I knew. There’s so much more I didn’t know or forgot from 6th grade social studies class

One thing I wish were better, some scenes are pretty laggy. I’m kind of surprised given the simple layout of the game.

This game was a trip. Clarevoyance is a visual novel with light resource management elements set in the Acadian municipality of Clare in Nova Scotia. The images in the game are all taken in the region and all dialogue is voiced by locals in Acadian French with English subtitles. I am from New Brunswick originally so it sounds pretty nostalgic.

You play as someone visiting relatives in Clare over the summer. As you travel around doing different activities and “spinning yarns” with the locals, you start to realize that things are not quite as they seem. The story incorporates local legends in a way that was pretty clever and fun. The resource management portion involves earning money, buying food and managing your “well being”, a sort of HP gauge that decreases when you use your powers to interact with the local mythology and increases when you do certain fun activities. There is also a time system where activities use up certain amounts of time in a day, and some things can only be done at specific times of day. There isn’t a time limit though so you can take as long as you want to proceed through the story.

The Frostrune

The Frostrune

The Frostrune is an elegant point-and-click adventure, with strong, authentic Norse culture.

The story is set in and around an abandonned, coastal hamlet. The environment feels great. I used to live in Norway, and could see the familiar lighting and landscape features in the portrayal in the game). The hand-drawn art style is consistent and rich - a quick look at the trailer on the Steam Store page will give you a feel for it. The animations are simple, but very effective. Overall, I like it very much.

The Frostrune is a point-and-click adventure game. It’s set in ancient times on a Nordic island, and its story is drenched in Norse mythology.

As soon as you launch the game, it’s clear The Frostrune is a basic production. You’ll find an option to change the game’s resolution and language, and that’s it. The latter option is crucial, though. Since the entire game’s narrative is in Old Norse speech, you’ll rely on subtitles to understand what’s actually being said. Subtitles are available in English, Italian, Castilian Spanish, Arabic, Norwegian, Russian, French and German.

Awesome game and some really tough puzzles. I enjoyed the endless runner and got some cool skins from it. I’m an achievement hunter so it was fun to replay the story to unlock them! The endless runners one were more difficult to get but I got there!

While none of the puzzles were all too difficult the big problem with the game is that the controls are terrible. You can’t hold and drag where you want to go, you have to click and wait, except when you are holding something there are on screen buttons you need to click with your mouse. Plus half of the time when you click to pick something up it glitches and either doesn’t grab it or you do grab it but it clips into another object. I know it’s free but there are some really great free games out there and I hold this type of game to the same standards.

A Tale of Two Kingdoms

A Tale of Two Kingdoms

I’m going to assume that most people found this game after playing Heroine’s Quest. Compared to Heroine’s Quest, A Tale of Two Kingdoms has more focus on puzzles. There is no actual combat system in this game since the protagonist isn’t really a fighter, so you have to use your quick wit to get yourself out of dangerous situations. This may prove challenging as you can find many items within the game and sometimes it takes a while to figure out which item you need to use.

Having said that, I think A Tale of Two Kingdoms is harder than Heroine’s Quest, mainly because you often find yourself wondering what to do next. The first 2 chapters are pretty straightforward, but after that the game allows you to explore and that’s where things start to get more complicated. You will probably need 15-25 hours to finish your first playthrough.

This is a tribute and throwback to the classic adventure games of last century. Unlike Heroine’s Quest it is not also an ‘affectionate parody’ of the genre or the mythology it’s based on. I bought it partly because I liked those games and it is fun to play that way again. I also bought it in part because I really enjoyed the free Heroine’s Quest but I don’t want to join yet more online services just to donate money.

While I enjoyed those old games, I wasn’t very good at them and I played this using the walkthrough for the original edition of this game. It worked quite well but for some reason the developers took it down. At any rate, I didn’t get the full effect of wandering around wondering what to do. The basis of these old-style adventure games was moving around and picking up or at least looking at anything more pixellated than the painted backgrounds. Then you would apply the various items to the puzzles you encountered and seeing what worked … if you survived. This game doesn’t have the hidden dangers the King’s Quest series was infamous for. You can usually see danger coming. However, it can usually also see you, so you are barred from saving until you survive. You should save after anything important or that you just don’t want to do again.

The Game Review

Game Visuals

I want to mention that the visuals in the game are nicely done. The visuals can be adjusted in the game’s option menu.

Real player with 6.6 hrs in game

Not a bad one, I liked the story and the fact you learn a little about Norse mythology.

The Hidden Object scenes are correct, maybe a little too obvious and the puzzles, while being iterations or others we can see in other HOG, were slightly different than usual, avoiding the feeling to redo something you already did a lot of times.

Now not everything is perfect, some angles for the puzzles were making the resolving complicated, such as the one with the mirrors and the rays which (honestly) drove me mad. I spent a lot of times on some other puzzles not because they were difficult, but because the art or angle of choice was making it more complicated than it should have.

Mira

Mira

Mira is more of a visual novel with some hidden-object elements - there is no exploration or inventory-based puzzles that you would find in traditional adventure games. You can complete the game around 90 minutes, although I suspect that I have not discovered the ‘true ending’. There are several story choices which in theory should change the ending cutscene, but so far I got the same result following 2 different paths, however, I noticed more than 2 possibilities to end the game. I don’t know if I am giving the developer too much credit, it would be a shame if all ‘hard decisions’ had the same outcome. When it comes to puzzles, I have never played a game in this genre with so little challenge; there are only 3 types of easy riddles, including pattern matching, hidden-object, and sequencing (and I could do most of them with my eyes closed).

New Point-and-Click Adventure - Mira

Mira is a point-and-click adventure following an enigmatic heroine of the same name on a journey from a World War II ravaged Kraków to the mystical land of Navia, heavily inspired by Slavic folklore. The game, a definite labour of love, releases today after over six years of development by two-person team Too Husky and is a delightful amalgamation of hand-painted art-work and cleverly interwoven mythology.

Overall, Mira is a short but enjoyable experience in which the interwoven narrative, storytelling techniques and stunning artwork are the standout features. The WWII setting is not very obvious but the inspiration drawn from Slavic folklore is very apparent and adds an extra element of curiosity for the player.

The Light at the End of the Ocean

The Light at the End of the Ocean

I actually really liked this visual novel, and if you like queer based visual novels - you’ll probably like it too! You can play it multiple times to get different endings. It’s fun unraveling the mystery. It’s also very nice that the creator showed you how to unlock a special Easter egg. I circled around it for about a year, trying to decide if I pull the trigger or not. By the time I grabbed it, I was kicking myself for not getting it sooner. It’s just seemed so obvious that I would have enjoyed it.

Pros:

1. The story is a unique mixture of mystery and pain, how each character has a large purpose guiding the main character through the mysterious place.

2. The characters are all presented in an interesting way in the beginning, just going by who they are instead of their names until later on such as Guest, Keeper, Archivist.

Darkarta: A Broken Heart’s Quest Standard Edition

Darkarta: A Broken Heart’s Quest Standard Edition

Already played CE of this game, where I was very satisfied with, so can’t say nothing bad about this standard edition of this amazing game. Since I am giving this review just 3 days after this edition is released, I must say that developers need to remove some parts which belong to CE version, but I guess they will do it soon, since they already fixed CE very well. I highly suggest this game to HOPA (HOG) fans and I am pretty sure that every of you guys will trully enjoy in this beautiful graphic, relaxing soundtracks and richful story line. Once again, great work Tuttifrutti Interactive, you made your fans happy once again with this standard edition (mostly ones who don’t have enough money to buy for now CE). I am very excited while waiting for Darkarta 2…

WARNING: This is not the complete game!!!

I really enjoyed the game, but I can’t recommend this version, due to the errors I received (Not game ending) and that I can’t complete this story or access the extras without the non exsistent DLC.

The story was compelling and the gameplay was fun. There were several grammatical errors, but nothing that actually hindered the story. I loved the HO areas, as they actually had reference to items I needed to solve the other puzzles and that several were puzzles within the puzzles, which I LOVE. I did get this game on sale, it was half off, but to my dismay, the standard edition is not complete and the DLC required to complete this game doesn’t exist. When I first glanced at this page I didn’t see an actual CE, just the music pack, so in order for me to get the achievements - I got most of the ones available on expert mode - I need to buy the full CE. I have noticed there is suppose to be the DLC for an extra $2 to upgrade. Not sure if that will ever happen, but that would make me feel more comfortable recommending this game.
