Little Hats

Little Hats

Not bad at all for an early alpha. Plenty of space to run around, harvesting, crafting and building systems work, some dangers, a bit of detailed neighborhoods already in. Pro tip: agarics are not poisonous to gnomes!

I would recommend the game while it is cheap and just hope a sole developer comes through and finishes the project. I personally have a good feeling about this : )

Ethos 2: Fall Of Empires

Ethos 2: Fall Of Empires

Carve Your Own Path

Ethos 2: Fall Of Empires is a Historical RPG where every single decision you make affects your journey. Abilities, upgrades, weapons, interactions, quests, the atmosphere, and much more, are all affected by the actions and moral decisions you make within the game.

Become a tyrant, a hero, a lone wolf, or many other archetypes, the choice is yours!

The Story

The game takes place in the year 1453. You play as Constantine XI Palaiologos, the last Emperor of the Byzantine Empire. Your once great city of Constantinople has fallen into the hands of the Ottomans and your goal is to take it back.

You can do this by gathering troops/equipment/allies from leaders of other nearby nations in Egypt, the Balkans, The Middle East, and more! OR you can also choose to overthrow the leaders of other nations, and take their nations by force!

You may also attempt to take back Constantinople by making yourself an extremely powerful one-man-army, and attempt to take the city by yourself whenever you are ready. This can be through many means such as assassination of Mehmed the Conqueror, or by facing the entire Ottoman army by yourself.

Style

The game is very non-linear. Meaning that you can technically attempt to finish the final quest very early on in the game. Its an open-world game that doesn’t place a limit on exploration.

Consequences

Want to murder a main character that you need to complete a quest? Go for it. But expect there to be consequences. Want to become a pacifist and try to not harm anyone ever? Go for it. But expect there to be consequences.

Why This Game Is Being Made

As a massive RPG-fan, I was very tired of many AAA games giving you the illusion of ‘your decisions matter’. Because at the end of the day, choices in many AAA games pretty much only affected how much of a discount you could get at a merchants shop, or how some NPC’s react to you when you walk by.

I really want choices to matter in games. And that’s why this game is being made.

Saying that, this is a passion project for myself, and no one should expect this to be a AAA title. But hopefully it could be a really fun indie game that people can replay and have fun with :)

A beautiful adventure game with “retro” design sensibilities that must be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

A classic tale of an epic, heroic journey to defeat a powerful evil being, paired with a huge and fantastically crafted world to explore. Presentation is definitely this game’s strength, to the point it can sometimes become overwhelming. A few things I didn’t like was that the game draws out for too long on some parts of the story and because of this, the combat can become tiresome due to it not being used to the fullest. Port itself is excellent and while 60 fps would have been amazing, the 30fps cap is understandable and doesn’t get in the way.

Saṃsāra

Saṃsāra

Overview

SAMSARA® is a next-gen action-adventure RPG that fuses elements of Buddhism with souls-like gameplay — challenging players to meditate on their philosophy, life and death to help them find meaning through discourse, conflict and exploration.

Description:

Saṃsāra is a souls-like that challenges players to meditate on overcoming loss, failure and death through a core mechanic of reincarnation as 9 different avatars. The game is a 3D, third-person, action role-playing game (RPG) in the vein of the ‘Soulsborne’ (FromSoftware, 2009-2019) genre/series, taking cues from the older, shorter but still epic action-adventure game, Shadow of the Colossus (Team Ico, 2006-2018).

In Buddhism, Saṃsāra is the cycle of death and rebirth to which all life is bound. The players goal is to find a way to escape this cyclic existence, to escape Samsara. They will achieve this through discourse, conflict and exploration within the beautiful, deadly and dynamic Desire Realm (Kāmadhātu).

Gameplay Pillars

Core gameplay pillars include:

  • Conflict - physical, ranged and magical combat encounters with NPC’s who become enemies depending on which avatar form the player assumes.

  • Discourse - impactful, choice-based narratives delivered by cryptic, resolute and wandering NPC’s who are partially based on historical characters and represent Buddhist, Stoic and Daoist worldviews.

  • Exploration - uncovering ancient secrets and witnessing spectacular vistas, the player will traverse the Desire Realm: from the isolated circular edge of the Cakravāḍa mountains that encompass the world; across the Four Great Continents of scorching sand, glistening ice, dense tropics and serene lakes, to their penultimate destination; ascending the sacred five-peaked heights of Mt. Meru to reach the Gods domain, or descending beneath to the fiery, dark, gold-laden root of the world where demons reign.

Niffelheim

Niffelheim

Niffelheim Review

Niffelheim offers you a different but very addictive adventure, and that is not all!

Some key points that this game offers:

  1. Stunning visuals and animations.

  2. In depth crafting system.

  3. A little bit of everything, some RPG, some Strategy, some Mining and a whole lot more.

  4. Indie Gem 5/5

  5. Very addictive play.

  6. Co-op and Multiplayer options available.

Gameplay & Controls:

The game has full controller support. However, if you prefer to stick to the trusty keyboard and mouse, fret not the game plays beautifully with either. The mouse can be used to complete a whole bunch of actions, which can get confusing or just limit the effects. By effects I mean, we get to hunt, forage, chop trees and mine, there are buttons for each of these actions. You do have the options to remap keys to your liking.

  • WHAT THIS GAME ISN’T: a regular action 2D “hack and slash” game.

  • WHAT THIS GAME IS: a resource gathering & crafting survival game. (gather, hunt, eat, mine & craft to further kill bosses and defend your self from hordes)

The violence in the game is secondary, is a very chill game with its dangers enough to make it very fun!. It is very addictive due its rewardness .

However tha combat system isn’t that obvious. (You have to manually block and hit; thankfully you can play with a controller which I found funner. The combat is simple and fun enough for the experience it offers. I combat is so much easier and fast with controller)

I put off buying this for months because I’m not a fan of the kill-or-be-killed genre. But once I got over that, I’m loving the game! There’s a surprising diversity of things to do, freedom if you want it, sufficient guidance, and a touch of humour. The game has never crashed on me, and the dev is very quick to respond to suggestions.

Real player with 41.2 hrs in game

A very fun experience overall. It’s a joy to use the weapons and hunt all across the map. The game is full of strange and wonderful secrets and surprises, but much of it is gated behind the opening levels. If there is one complaint I have with this game, it’s with the vague directions given to you in story missions. Probably a good 2 hours at least of my current play time has been spent trawling through mission areas to find a tiny macguffin on the ground that was in plain sight but very easy to miss if you don’t know to look for it. The core gameplay of wandering around and shooting everything that moves before it kills you is very fun, if overwhelming at times. There are times where you can go a full 20 minutes without being attacked by a critter while walking around the map, and others where you simply do not have enough time to reload because there are so many things attacking you at once. This game is also fairly rough around the edges, but it is a blast to play if you can look past it’s faults. A strong recommend to any aspiring indie afficionados, or to anyone who might like a kooky hunting game. Cheers.
