Once in a while, an uncut gem arrives in the gaming market. You see this game on the Steam Store, and you’re amazed. It’s dazzling splendour, it’s the fantastic art design and its engaging story. Then you realise that this uncut gem remains an uncut gem because it has more potential. It has so much potential that if expanded with DLCs and free updates, this game can become even greater. The main strength of this game is a strong story and a solid artistic design. Its puzzles are fun, but they can be complex for a beginner at first. I failed many times having to defeat multiple bosses and it was frustrating, to say the least. Many moments kept me scratching my head on how to defeat the Asuras.

The Frostrune

The Frostrune

The Frostrune is an elegant point-and-click adventure, with strong, authentic Norse culture.

The story is set in and around an abandonned, coastal hamlet. The environment feels great. I used to live in Norway, and could see the familiar lighting and landscape features in the portrayal in the game). The hand-drawn art style is consistent and rich - a quick look at the trailer on the Steam Store page will give you a feel for it. The animations are simple, but very effective. Overall, I like it very much.

The Frostrune is a point-and-click adventure game. It’s set in ancient times on a Nordic island, and its story is drenched in Norse mythology.

As soon as you launch the game, it’s clear The Frostrune is a basic production. You’ll find an option to change the game’s resolution and language, and that’s it. The latter option is crucial, though. Since the entire game’s narrative is in Old Norse speech, you’ll rely on subtitles to understand what’s actually being said. Subtitles are available in English, Italian, Castilian Spanish, Arabic, Norwegian, Russian, French and German.

Jotun: Valhalla Edition

Jotun: Valhalla Edition

Jotun is a game that suffers from a lack of direction. It’s a tremendously beautiful game (minus a few small quibbles), but doesn’t seem to understand if it wants to be an atmospheric exploration game, or a slow paced dark souls / shadows of the colossus style boss slayer. In trying to do both, it sort of fails in all angles. On the plus side, it is relatively short, so the downsides of the game don’t overshadow the nice bits too badly. I would say a roughly 5 hour game, depending on how much trouble you have with the bosses.

Jotun

Platform: PC Windows

Genre: Action/Exploration

Introduction:

Thunder Lotus Games first title Jotun, another positive outcome of a successful Kickstarter campaign, is an epic trot through a world of Norse mythology. It’s a top-down action exploration game that pits you against large foes and beautiful, yet treacherous landscapes. Jotun delivers challenging boss battles, but it also focuses heavily on building atmosphere and anticipation rather than throwing countless of enemies at the player. The considerable amount of downtime before these fights might put off some gamers, but if you’re able to absorb yourself in the world through its beautiful hand drawn visuals, powerful soundtrack, and epically cool voice-overs, you will also find the boss battle well worth the buildup. It might also make you want to read up on your Norse mythology knowledge.

A beautiful adventure game with “retro” design sensibilities that must be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

A classic tale of an epic, heroic journey to defeat a powerful evil being, paired with a huge and fantastically crafted world to explore. Presentation is definitely this game’s strength, to the point it can sometimes become overwhelming. A few things I didn’t like was that the game draws out for too long on some parts of the story and because of this, the combat can become tiresome due to it not being used to the fullest. Port itself is excellent and while 60 fps would have been amazing, the 30fps cap is understandable and doesn’t get in the way.

Really interesting game with captivating story.

Even though combat is a little simple, fighting giant Vikings did not get old. Puzzles were decent.

Where the game really shines is the story and superb acting of the main character.

Even the sidelore spread out through the game was a joy listening to.

Game feels rather short (10-ish hours) but that’s just me wanting more.

Worth it, even at full price (20Eur). Now it is 75% off and that is a really good deal.

NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits

NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits

NyxQuest features a Greek mythology setting/story, and you control both the main character, Nyx (who has limited flying and gliding abilities, which form the basis of the platforming side of things), and the ‘hand of Zeus’ with which you assist her by throwing blocks around and such forth (oh yes, bow down before the awesome block-moving powers of the Father of the Gods!)

It’s a fairly relaxed kind of platformer, without any pixel-perfect jumping required (thank goodness), and I found the flight-based movement to be an enjoyable change. It’s not that you can’t easily mess up in this game; merely that the chances of doing so once you know what you want to do are much less than in some other games; so while it is challenging at times, it’s rarely ever really tough.

Real player with 20.7 hrs in game

Basically NyxQuest is a nice but quite short puzzle-platformer. In this game you take control of Nyx, a winged girl from the realm of gods in mythological Greece. The world is ending and you have to find your lover, a mortal named Icarus.

A slight detour: In the Greek mythology Icarus was a guy whose dad built him wings out of feathers and wax and warned him not to fly too close to the Sun; then he basically died.

Nyx can fly and soar for short distances. She has to avoid environmental hazards like hot sand, pylons, fire balls and falling to pits, and also monsters like harpies and giant fire-breathing snakes. The ultimate goal of each level is to simply reach the end. Fortunately there are several check points each level.

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

Came here as a gamer… left as a professional rice farmer degree

The realistic, in depth elements of rice farming combined with honing fighting skills plus surprising character revelations and development make Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin a magnificent game. Beside its beautiful story‚ Sakuna’s personal growth is a pleasure to watch. Her reason for living is tested to the limit. The balanced emphasis on farming and fighting provides a great variety of tasks to undertake, providing dozens of hours of fun.

I’ll leave a TLDR at the bottom.

I was hesitant yet curious coming into Sakuna. A game that’s half side-scroller beat’m up, and half in-depth rice farming is something unique and interesting to me.

We are introduced to Sakuna, a daughter of harvest goddesss Toyohana and war god Takeribi. Sakuna is a goddess who resides in the capital indulging herself on all sorts of expensive luxuries until one day she meets a certain group of humans and gets involved in an unfortunate event that has her and the group exiled to an isle of demons called Hinoe. It is on this isle that Sakuna will grow rice, hunt demons, and come to learn more about the humans that were exiled along with her.

Facettes

Facettes

The game

Sitting at her messy desk. The objects that dress it evoke chimeras, stories and fantasy characters for our protagonist, the Author. Dreamy and immersed in her imagination, she brings this decor to life.

Through this introspective adventure, explore the identity questions of the Author, this faceless protagonist. Let yourself be guided by this inner journey to the rhythm of her personal wanderings.

The Author is the character that you will play and follow through her inner journey.

The gameplay

Dice in hand and perched on this desk, the Author of Facettes invites you on a journey of identity initiation. At your fingertips is a dreamlike world, populated by heroines, Potentials and life paths to discover.

The Author keeps creating more Potentials using tabletop RPG mechanics: roll a dice and assign values to various characteristics in the process of character creation.

There is a set of Potentials to collect, alongside the objects which inspired them and the voice recordings of the Author’s thoughts.

The Potentials

Her experiences give life to fantastic creatures and worlds yet imbued with reality that nourish the personal construction of this mysterious Author.

These creatures are the “Potentials”, enigmatic women whose stories represent many possible lives for this mysterious protagonist. They each have a past, a purpose, and ties with other Potentials in this introspective journey.

The world

The stories of these chimerical women gradually come to life through the dreams of the Author in the phantasmagorical world they inhabit.

Mirror Island is the main place of this fantasy universe. There is where most of the Potentials live, but some of them are not terrestrial beings.

The island is torn apart by a conflict involving many of the Potentials rivaling to rule this land.

Features

  • An inclusive and LGBTQIA2+ game celebrating the queer identity, which is also an accessible and nice-looking game introducing an issue by experiencing it

  • A metaphorical and poetic experience sharing the process of self-discovery and accepting one’s identity

  • A relatable story that contributes to build empathy with the Author, the characters and LGBTQIA2+ community, providing more content to understanding the issue and self-questioning

Nuances

Facettes is the third game from the Nuances series which holds a strong message about feminism, LGBT+ themes or inclusiveness.

It follows Sweet Love, a game about moral harassment within a couple, marital rape and femicides and A Comfortable Burden, a game tackling mental load with an otter couple.

Target Audience: Patient Platforming players.

Summary:

Rough around the edges is the best way to describe the game. The core of the game in terms of the action gameplay for a 5 dollar game is solid: the flying mechanics and change up between fast/slow gameplay brings back feelings of the old NES games of days past. It’s very good with level design and game design around the core of the game. But there’s little things that annoy that start to add up, like the pausing of the game actually not pausing the game, and staying too committed to an NES like setup (with only using two buttons on the controller). But in the end, it’s definitely worth the price of admission with solid gameplay and a good aesthetic even for a pixel platformer (that makes it stand out a tiny bit).

Real player with 11.5 hrs in game

I want to preface this by saying that I backed this game on Kickstarter; I thought the game looked promising. The animations and art are beautiful and feel fluid. The best part is when you chain enemy kills together and just continue to rise up fast, it is really satisfying. Sadly, the good things about this game end there.

The music was nice at first but then it got annoying when I had to replay the same level, repeatedly when I died. It is not too hard, but you are going to have trouble in some parts. This would be fine if the levels were not all pretty much the same but reskinned. The formula: normal level where you collect a specific amount of coins to beat it and then a similar level but just climbing up while acid is rising. Occasionally there is a boss fight, which I would describe as an endurance test. They are not hard since the boss patterns are predictable, but take too much time. The worst part about some levels is that money is scarce, so you better kill everything you see and try not to die before reaching the exit.

The Game Review

Game Visuals

I want to mention that the visuals in the game are nicely done. The visuals can be adjusted in the game’s option menu.

Real player with 6.6 hrs in game

Not a bad one, I liked the story and the fact you learn a little about Norse mythology.

The Hidden Object scenes are correct, maybe a little too obvious and the puzzles, while being iterations or others we can see in other HOG, were slightly different than usual, avoiding the feeling to redo something you already did a lot of times.

Now not everything is perfect, some angles for the puzzles were making the resolving complicated, such as the one with the mirrors and the rays which (honestly) drove me mad. I spent a lot of times on some other puzzles not because they were difficult, but because the art or angle of choice was making it more complicated than it should have.
